Chapter 183: Preparing for the Long Walk

“What are you doing, Boss?” Gu Lang asked instinctively as he watched Wang Ping approach, rubbing his tiny paws together menacingly.

“What am I doing?” Wang Ping growled through gritted teeth, feeling the dream of a hot shower and a plush mattress slipping further away with every step. “I’m going to beat you up!”

“Wait! Wait!” Gu Lang pleaded, raising his hands in defense. “We can talk this out—OWW!!”

The live-stream was filled with the echoing cries of the beleaguered streamer. Meanwhile, Yuan Xiaoxiao walked back toward the group, holding Little Four in her arms. She noticed the cub craning its neck over her shoulder, clearly intrigued by the spectacle unfolding before them.

“What? Do you want to go save your master?” Yuan Xiaoxiao teased playfully, crouching down to place the wolf on the ground.

Little Four barked joyfully and scampered off toward Gu Lang, who was rolling around on the dirt path. Without hesitation, the pup clamped its small jaws onto Gu Lang’s sleeve and began tugging fiercely, shaking its head like it was trying to rip the fabric apart.

Yuan Xiaoxiao smirked. “I knew it,” she muttered under her breath. “There’s no way you’d side with him.”

---

Half an hour later, all four doors of the Wrangler were wide open, and everything salvageable had been unloaded onto the nearby patch of earth. Gu Lang, Yuan Xiaoxiao, and Wang Ping sat in a loose triangle formation, surrounded by their scattered belongings. Little Four trotted happily between them, sniffing at one person, pawing at another, thoroughly entertained by the chaos.

“Seriously, how are you so carefree?” Wang Ping grumbled, shooing the cub away for the nth time. He stared glumly at the pile of supplies, joining the others in their shared sense of despair.

Yuan Xiaoxiao felt particularly dejected. It dawned on her that she might have made a grave mistake hitching a ride with this crew. Initially, she thought tagging along with Gu Lang would be an easy journey to Rutog County—a smooth trip where she could relax and enjoy the scenery. But reality hit hard. Barely two days into the adventure, they’d already encountered endless mishaps, culminating in the destruction of their vehicle.

Some say the four most honest yet frustrating words in life are: I regret this now. Unfortunately, regret offered no solutions here. Turning back wasn’t an option either; they were already over 200 kilometers from Nyima County. And as for continuing onward to Rutog County? Who knew how far that still was?

“Damn it, why did I end up stuck with these guys?” Yuan Xiaoxiao muttered bitterly, her shoulders slumping in defeat. Not only was she stranded without transportation, but she’d also become an unwilling pack mule.

Cough…

Sensing the growing tension, Gu Lang glanced at the tablet sitting beside Wang Ping, then clapped his hands together. With forced cheerfulness, he turned to Yuan Xiaoxiao and suggested, “Let’s sort through the essentials we’ll need for the road ahead and divide them up. Looks like we’re hiking from here!”

After a moment of silence, Yuan Xiaoxiao rubbed her face and plastered on a bright smile. Feigning innocence, she chirped, “Sure thing! Don’t worry, Brother Gu—I grew up doing farm work, so I’m pretty strong. You won’t have to worry about me slowing us down!”

Her subtext, however, couldn’t have been clearer. In most scenarios, the male counterpart would hurriedly respond with chivalry: “You’re a lady—you shouldn’t carry too much. Leave the heavy stuff to me!”

Unfortunately for her, Gu Lang wasn’t exactly conventional.

“That’s great!” he exclaimed, leaping to his feet with exaggerated enthusiasm. “I was worried you wouldn’t be able to handle much weight since you’re a girl. Now I feel much better!”

Yuan Xiaoxiao’s smile froze mid-expression.

“HAH—!”

Unable to contain himself any longer, Wang Ping burst out laughing. The sound started small but quickly escalated into uncontrollable guffaws. Before long, he collapsed onto the ground, shoulders shaking violently as eerie chuckles echoed across the barren landscape.

In the live-stream chat, viewers were baffled by Wang Ping’s hysterics. Those who hadn’t seen Yuan Xiaoxiao’s expression struggled to understand what was so funny.

“It’s supposed to be a sad situation—why is Boss laughing like that?”

“You don’t get it. In dramas, characters laugh when they’re super sad.”

“He’s laughing until he goes crazy.”

“I just realized—I’m almost done collecting Boss’s entire set of reaction memes!”

“Holy crap, big shot, send me a copy when you’re done.”

“Same request here.”

“By the way, shouldn’t the streamer call for rescue by now?”

“Are you kidding? When has Gu Lang ever voluntarily called for help?”

“There’s food and water—we’re not desperate enough yet.”

---

The items salvaged from the Wrangler fell into three broad categories.

First were consumables: beef jerky, spicy gluten, seasonings replenished in Nyima County, instant noodles, and energy bars.

Second came equipment: the streaming tablet, smartphones, portable Wi-Fi devices, tents, lighters, first-aid kits, sleeping bags, and similar necessities.

The third category? Utter junk. At least, that’s how Yuan Xiaoxiao viewed it. Among the clutter were Gu Lang’s tripod, ice axe, portable urinal (unused), and a dusty drone that had been gathering cobwebs in the backseat.

Before she could comment, Wang Ping—having recovered from his laughter—scrambled over to the pile and snatched up the drone. Cradling it protectively, he declared with an air of defiance, “I’ll carry this myself—no need for anyone else’s help!”

“Tch.” Rolling her eyes, Yuan Xiaoxiao didn’t wait for Gu Lang’s instructions. Instead, she grabbed an empty backpack and began loading it with supplies.

Since Gu Lang showed zero intention of being considerate or reliable, Yuan Xiaoxiao decided there was no point playing games. If she ended up getting duped, she wanted it to be by someone clever—not someone clueless. After all, the scariest kind of fool was the unpredictable one.

With this mindset, she prioritized packing critical items like the first-aid kit and food into her own bag, preparing as if she were embarking on the trek alone.

Meanwhile, Wang Ping retrieved his custom-made miniature backpack—originally purchased alongside his custom wardrobe—and emptied its contents onto Gu Lang. He carefully placed the drone inside, securing it snugly. Next, he attached the controller to the strap using its retractable clip, originally designed for smartphones.

Once finished, he looked up to find Gu Lang muttering to himself while organizing supplies. Intrigued, Wang Ping crept closer and caught fragments of the streamer’s rambling monologue:

“If only I’d known this would happen, I should’ve bought a folding bike… Hmm, maybe an electric scooter would’ve been better—it saves energy… Though an e-scooter might’ve been too bulky…”

“Idiot,” Wang Ping muttered under his breath, shaking his head. “If only I’d known earlier, I’d have beaten you half to death last night. Then none of this would’ve happened.”

“Woof! Woof!”

Little Four reappeared from behind Yuan Xiaoxiao, bounding over to inspect Wang Ping’s new setup. The curious cub sniffed at the drone, occasionally batting at its propellers with a tiny paw.

“Aww…” Wang Ping reached out to pat the cub’s head, his furry face tinged with regret. “Too bad it’s too small… If only it were bigger, I could ride it…”
