Chapter 184: I Looked Up to You as My Master, But You…

As Gu Lang began sorting through his belongings, he realized just how much stuff he’d brought along. If they tried to carry everything, it was likely that someone—probably him—would collapse from exhaustion within two kilometers. In the end, aside from the tent and essential cooking gear, items like the portable urinal were tossed back into the abandoned Wrangler. They’d have to arrange for a tow truck once they reached Rutog County.

At least his walking staff, which had accompanied him throughout the journey, finally proved useful. Whether this realization brought joy or frustration remained unclear.

When they set off again, Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao each shouldered a large backpack. Wang Ping carried the drone, trailed by an energetic Little Four, forming a peculiar little caravan. To ensure the live stream continued uninterrupted, Gu Lang strapped the tablet securely to his chest and mounted the rearview mirror camera on his shoulder, covering both front and back angles. However, the camera now relied on a power bank, which wouldn’t last long.

They walked in silence for a stretch, watching the Wrangler shrink into a distant speck. Finally, Gu Lang glanced back at their modest group and chuckled. “Hey, we kind of look like the four main characters from Journey to the West!”

Yuan Xiaoxiao shot him a sidelong glare but said nothing.

Unperturbed, Gu Lang kept rambling, seemingly addressing either the live-stream audience or simply filling the silence because he couldn’t stop talking. Yuan Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes internally. While she didn’t see the resemblance to the legendary quartet, Gu Lang’s incessant chatter certainly rivaled the infamous "only you" singer.

Lost in thought, she suddenly heard Gu Lang say, “Hmm, Boss likes hitting people so much—he must be Sun Wukong. And the wolf cub… well, it hasn’t done much yet, so let’s call it Sha Wujing…”

Yuan Xiaoxiao froze mid-step, turning to glare at Gu Lang. He stopped too, looking puzzled. “What?”

Her fists clenched as she feigned outrage. “Are you trying to call me Piggy?!”

“Uh…”

Gu Lang faltered, scratching his head awkwardly. Only then did he realize that assigning roles left only Tang Sanzang (the monk) and Zhu Bajie (the pig) unclaimed—and neither option appealed to him.

Wang Ping gave them both a look reserved for particularly dense individuals before continuing ahead with Little Four, who now seemed tired and reluctant to walk. Every few steps, Wang Ping had to tug the cub forward by its ear.

“Hmph!”

Seeing Gu Lang genuinely hesitate between being the monk or the pig, Yuan Xiaoxiao rolled her eyes and resumed walking. She resolved silently not to respond further; if she did, she might as well admit defeat.

Gu Lang caught up, still visibly conflicted. After a prolonged pause, he ventured cautiously, “Well… how about you play Bai Long Ma (the White Dragon Horse)?”

“Pfft!”

In the live-stream chat, someone immediately burst out laughing.

“Damn, I don’t respect anyone, but I do respect Gu Lang!”

“I looked up to you as my master, but you want to ride me?”

“HAHA, calculate the psychological damage area for Miss Xiaoxiao!”

Gu Lang’s case of chuunibyou is no joke.”

“Miss Xiaoxiao’s ears are red, haha—it seems she agrees.”

“To be fair, Gu Lang’s mindset is impressive. If it were me, stranded like this with a broken car, I’d probably lose hope.”

“Nah, Gu Lang isn’t optimistic—he’s just clueless.”

PartingIsSuchSweetSorrow gifted a yacht ×…”

“PartingIsSuchSweetSorrow: Gu Lang, admit it—are you into Miss Xiaoxiao?”

At this point, Yuan Xiaoxiao’s eyes blazed with fury. Her chest heaved as she fantasized about delivering a flying kick, imprinting her size 37 hiking boots onto Gu Lang’s smug face. Hearing the gift notification chime from his tablet, she spun around furiously. “Back off! Don’t talk to me! And stop pointing that stupid camera at me!”

“Oh…”

Gu Lang turned away, muttering under his breath, “So picky… Bai Long Ma is technically a dragon, you know…”

Yuan Xiaoxiao stared at him for a moment, then unexpectedly burst into laughter. It was surreal—here she was, arguing over whether she was a pig or a horse, engaging in such absurdly juvenile topics.

Walking slowed their pace considerably. By evening, they’d covered barely 30 kilometers. The latter half of the journey proved especially grueling, even for Wang Ping, who started lagging behind. Eventually, Gu Lang and Yuan Xiaoxiao took turns carrying Wang Ping and Little Four. Gu Lang lamented wryly, “I thought having Boss around would lighten my load. Guess I was wrong.”

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with golden hues, they arrived at a narrow, elongated lake. According to the map, it was called Dao Hu (Island Lake). Its shape was peculiar—barely a kilometer wide north-to-south but stretching nearly ten kilometers east-to-west, resembling a shoehorn. Gu Lang joked, “This isn’t an island lake—it’s a shoehorn lake!”

With nightfall approaching and exhaustion setting in, they decided to camp. Yuan Xiaoxiao, however, wanted to press on. Previously, traveling by car allowed them to cover upwards of a hundred kilometers daily, making early stops inconsequential. Now, every minute counted. Even an extra ten kilometers would bring them closer to Rutog County.

Physically, Yuan Xiaoxiao hadn’t lied earlier—she wasn’t holding anyone back. In fact, it was Gu Lang who plopped down stubbornly, refusing to move another step. Yuan Xiaoxiao sighed inwardly. If not for Wang Ping’s watchful gaze, she might’ve ditched Gu Lang altogether, taking the food supplies and running.

Watching Gu Lang slump lifelessly to the ground, Yuan Xiaoxiao felt a surge of irritation as Wang Ping calmly stepped out of the camera’s view, approached her, and then gestured toward Gu Lang’s backpack. She despised Gu Lang for his incompetence and resented Wang Ping for his manipulative streak.

“Damn it, I’m practically your errand girl now!”

Cursing Wang Ping silently for lacking marbles, Yuan Xiaoxiao reluctantly helped Gu Lang remove his backpack and began setting up the tent—a task she never would’ve dreamed of doing herself under normal circumstances. Back home, servants scrambled to handle such chores.

By the time night fell, Yuan Xiaoxiao had built a campfire and started boiling noodles. Meanwhile, Gu Lang—who had been playing dead all evening—finally stirred, crawling shamelessly to the fire’s warmth, eagerly awaiting dinner.

This was only the first day—or rather, half a day—of their trek. Gu Lang had never walked such distances before. Wang Ping estimated that by tomorrow morning, Gu Lang’s legs would ache so badly he’d question his very existence.

Glancing at Yuan Xiaoxiao, Wang Ping plotted silently.

“I need to make sure this girl doesn’t run off tonight…”

Rubbing his sore thighs, Gu Lang sat by the fire, attempting small talk. Gazing around, he remarked casually, “It’s strange—we haven’t seen any animals all afternoon. Usually, there are plenty when we travel.”

“Holy crap?”

Both Wang Ping and Yuan Xiaoxiao instinctively glared at him.

“You cursed jinx! Don’t say things like that!”

“Woooooo~”

As if on cue, a distant wolf howl echoed through the wind. Little Four, nestled in Yuan Xiaoxiao’s arms sipping milk from a bottle, perked up and began howling in response.

Yuan Xiaoxiao: …
Wang Ping: …
