To showcase his professionalism, Gu Lang took the initiative to volunteer for the night watch.

Of course, he had no choice—there was only one tent. Male-female propriety dictated that unless he wanted to sleep in the car with Wang Ping (which he dared not), he had to stay outside.

At this point, Gu Lang’s head sported a massive bump. If Wang Ping hadn’t held back, Gu Lang’s skull might have cracked open. Even so, he occasionally winced, sucking in cold air and wincing in pain.

"Was my tone not sincere enough? Or did I hit a nerve, making him furious?"

Sitting on the same stool Wang Ping’d used to beat himself earlier, the streamer sank into deep thought.

"The mind of a honey badger is so hard to read~"

---

Under the moonlit sky, the valley basked in rare clear weather. Occasionally, wisps of clouds drifted across the vast expanse, and the bright moon illuminated the landscape. Lakes and ponds shimmered silver under the moonlight, creating an ethereal glow.

The campfire crackled intermittently, sending sparks flying into the night breeze, quickly extinguished.

Gu Lang became so absorbed in his thoughts that he inadvertently dozed off. Sitting slumped on the stool, mouth agape, his snores carried far into the night. Occasionally, his head dipped too low, causing him to lurch toward the fire, abruptly halting his snoring as he gasped awake.

Only then did he remember to add more branches to the fire before drifting back into thought—and soon, snores filled the night once more.

After midnight, the temperature plummeted sharply.

The flames began to dwindle. Gu Lang jolted awake just as he nearly face-planted into the fire. Reaching out to grab more branches, he realized they were all gone. Sighing, he stood up to gather more wood.

At this moment, the tent zipper sounded, and Yuan Xiaoxiao emerged.

Seeing Gu Lang staring blankly at her, Yuan Xiaoxiao smiled, brushing her hair aside. "Brother Gu, it’s my turn to keep watch. Go rest!"

"Mmm, there’s no firewood left. Let me go collect some. Or you can sleep a bit longer?" As Gu Lang spoke, he stifled another yawn, causing Yuan Xiaoxiao to giggle behind her hand.

She stepped closer, gently pushing Gu Lang toward the tent. "Go rest! I’ll gather the firewood. If you’re sleep-deprived, I won’t dare ride in your car tomorrow!"

Another yawn escaped Gu Lang, and he could barely hold on. Glancing at his watch, it was exactly 2 AM. He wondered why he felt so exhausted outdoors when he could stay up all night gaming without feeling tired at home.

Nodding, Gu Lang gave her a few reminders—if she got sleepy, wake him up or sleep in the car. Then he crawled into the tent.

Watching him zip up the tent flap, Yuan Xiaoxiao turned toward the campfire. Just as she was about to sit down, a sharp cry rang out.

"Brother Gu, are you okay?"

Yuan Xiaoxiao called out.

After a moment, Gu Lang’s slightly embarrassed voice replied, "I’m fine, just bumped myself."

Inside the tent, Gu Lang lay face-down in his sleeping bag, breathing lightly. Forgetting about the bump on the back of his head, he had nearly cried out in pain when his head touched the pillow. He silently cursed, wondering why Wang Ping had hit him so hard this time.

Gu Lang never realized that Wang Ping had done it to completely eradicate any "unspeakable" thoughts. They could be brothers, but nothing more.

Outside the tent, Yuan Xiaoxiao remembered Gu Lang mentioning the lack of firewood. Rising from her seat, she ventured into the wilderness.

The moon was at its fullest, casting ample light. Though the valley had numerous water sources, the shallow soil and rocky terrain meant there were no tall trees—just sparse shrubs and grass.

Picking up some half-dry branches, Yuan Xiaoxiao prepared to explore further when she noticed a pair of headlights-like eyes glowing in the distance. Heavy breathing and footsteps approached—a massive brown bear, moving slowly toward the river.

Yuan Xiaoxiao froze, her heart racing. Seeing the bear hadn’t noticed her, she began retreating quietly toward the campfire.

Whether the bear had come for water or food, it stopped near the fire, seemingly wary.

Back at the fire, Yuan Xiaoxiao quickly added the branches, stoking the flames while keeping an eye on the bear. When it paused but refused to leave, she frowned, glancing nervously at the parked Wrangler.

If the bear ignored the fire and came closer, driving away would be the quickest escape.

"Should I wake the streamer? Or use him as a shield?"

While pondering, Yuan Xiaoxiao moved toward the driver’s door, scanning the terrain for the best escape route.

Reaching the door, she stretched out her hand to open it when a soft click sounded—the door locked itself.

"Huh?"

Tugging twice, she confirmed it wouldn’t budge. Puzzled, she turned around, assuming Gu Lang had woken up.

But no one was there. Only the distant bear stared intently at her.

"Brother Gu? Brother Gu?"

Yuan Xiaoxiao called softly, her voice blending with the crackling fire. The campsite remained silent, no response forthcoming.

Circling the car, she approached the tent and already heard Gu Lang’s snores from inside.

"..."

What was going on?

Yuan Xiaoxiao was certain she’d heard the locking sound, meaning the car had just been locked. Besides, Gu Lang had told her to sleep in the car if she got tired—why lock it?

"Could the car be malfunctioning?"

She’d only seen cars unlock when approached, never lock automatically.

At that moment, heavy footsteps approached—the bear had moved closer. Clenching her teeth, Yuan Xiaoxiao picked up a rock and returned to the driver’s door.

Glancing at the tent, she raised the rock, preparing to smash the window, when a faint hum sounded. The window rolled down on its own.

Frozen in place, Yuan Xiaoxiao saw a pair of glowing green night-vision eyes behind the glass. Wang Ping stared back, expressionless.

"Heh..."

Yuan Xiaoxiao chuckled bitterly, lowering her arm and tossing the rock aside.

She knew very well about honey badgers and their temperament—they could only be handled gently, responding poorly to force.

Sliding a palm-sized dagger from her sleeve, she smiled brightly and slowly extended her other hand toward Wang Ping’s neck.

"Good boy, stay still..."
