Chapter 178: Not as Skilled as Honey Badger

Clang!

A metallic sound rang out, and under the moonlight, a silver glint flashed—a dagger flew far away, over the riverbank, disappearing into the grass.

Yuan Xiaoxiao barely registered what happened before the dagger was knocked out of her hand. Suddenly, the collar of her windbreaker tightened, and a powerful force yanked her toward the car door.

Thud!

With a muffled grunt, Yuan Xiaoxiao was pulled close by Wang Ping, who grabbed her by the collar. Her chest slammed painfully against the car door.

As she looked up, her pupils contracted—Wang Ping’s claw was raised, its sharp tip less than a centimeter from her eye. She could even smell the scent of dried beef on it.

For some inexplicable reason, at this critical moment, a humorous thought popped into Yuan Xiaoxiao’s mind: No wonder Gu Lang got so thoroughly beaten—this honey badger is incredibly strong.

Wang Ping didn’t make any further moves. The two of them—one human, one honey badger—stared silently at each other.

Yuan Xiaoxiao didn’t dare move, fearing that the slightest struggle would cause his claw to pierce her eye. Though losing an eyeball wouldn’t be fatal, becoming a one-eyed woman would be utterly unattractive.

Maintaining the awkward horse stance for nearly five minutes made her legs ache, and her breathing grew heavier. Wang Ping’s furry face remained expressionless. Just as Yuan Xiaoxiao was racking her brain for a way out, Wang Ping moved.

The claw pointing at her eye suddenly shifted downward, lightly slapping her cheek several times.

Slap! Slap! Slap!

The small paw pads struck her face with crisp sounds. Yuan Xiaoxiao’s earlobes immediately flushed red.

What intrigued Wang Ping most, however, was her reaction. Despite his somewhat insulting slaps, Yuan Xiaoxiao remained outwardly calm. Even as her ears turned visibly red, her complexion stayed pale, betraying no emotion.

"Still suffering from the aftermath of nearly drowning, yet pretending to be composed?"

Wang Ping snorted disdainfully, his furry face showing contempt. He raised a single claw tip, mimicking Bruce Lee’s iconic gesture, wagged it at her, then pushed her collar forcefully outward.

Plop!

Yuan Xiaoxiao, already in a precarious squatting position leaning against the car door, lost her balance and fell onto the ground with another muffled groan.

The car window hummed softly again. Yuan Xiaoxiao looked up just in time to see the back of Wang Ping’s white-furred head disappear behind the rising glass.

Silently rising from the ground, she brushed off the dust clinging to her pants. Turning around, she noticed the brown bear that had been approaching earlier had already wandered off into the distance.

Relieved, Yuan Xiaoxiao circled the Wrangler and returned to the campfire. She realized the branches she’d tossed into the fire earlier had dried and ignited, causing the flames to burn brighter and stronger. No wonder the bear had decided against coming closer.

Rubbing her stiffened face, Yuan Xiaoxiao stood still for a long while before letting out a soft chuckle.

Reflecting on her recent actions, it felt as though she had deliberately walked into an embarrassing situation, allowing a certain honey badger to humiliate her. Not only was she outmatched in skill, but even her pride in composure and courage seemed mocked.

She now understood why Gu Lang endured such a beating last night without fighting back. Fighting back might leave him unable to eat properly; not fighting back at least allowed him to keep his dignity intact.

"Heh, quite the... unique duo indeed!"

Resuming her seat on the folding stool, Yuan Xiaoxiao watched the retreating silhouette of the brown bear, occasionally tossing sticks into the fire.

She wasn’t worried about being caught trying to escape with the car or getting scolded. Even if this honey badger were extraordinary, he was still just an animal. Surely, he couldn’t go tattling to Gu Lang?

When dawn broke outside the mountains, the sound of the car door opening startled Yuan Xiaoxiao, who had been dozing with her arms wrapped around her knees.

The campfire still burned, surrounded by a pile of half-dry shrubs, evidence that someone had gone out to collect firewood during the night.

As the temperature dropped sharply in the second half of the night, Yuan Xiaoxiao found herself in a difficult situation. Gu Lang had already taken the tent, and she had no desire to confront the honey badger inside the car. Left with few options, she endured the cold by the fire. But eventually, unable to bear it any longer, she scoured nearly a kilometer in every direction, gathering anything flammable she could find to keep the fire going.

Sniffling slightly, her nose runny from catching a chill, Yuan Xiaoxiao paid it no mind, watching warily as Wang Ping emerged from the car, yawning.

Ignoring her, Wang Ping carried his travel kit, strolling past the Wrangler to the riverside to brush his teeth.

Wang Ping’s morning routine was simple—brushing his teeth and washing his paws. Unless necessary, he avoided washing his face since drying his fur afterward was troublesome.

Today, however, was an exception. Upon waking, he discovered a certain wolf pup had once again pressed its rear against his face. After brushing his teeth, much to Yuan Xiaoxiao’s astonishment, Wang Ping retrieved a small tube of shampoo from his kit, applied it to his face, lathered up, and dunked his head into the water.

He used shampoo instead of facial cleanser because his face was covered in fur, making shampoo more effective. Once dry, his fur would be fluffy and soft.

After rinsing off the foam and shaking the water from his face, Wang Ping dragged his travel kit back to the campfire, stretching his neck to dry his face near the flames. Yuan Xiaoxiao gaped, her sleep-addled brain struggling to process what she was seeing.

"What are you staring at? Haven’t you ever seen such a handsome... honey badger before?"

Wang Ping bared his teeth at her. Once his fur was sufficiently dry, he took his travel kit back into the car.

Yuan Xiaoxiao pursed her lips, suddenly feeling a strange taste in her mouth and a greasy sensation on her face.

Rolling her eyes internally, she muttered under her breath and rose to walk toward the river. Unfortunately, unlike the well-equipped honey badger, she could only rinse her face and mouth with plain water. Mid-rinse, she suddenly remembered that Wang Ping had washed his face and brushed his teeth in this very river. Hastily spitting out the water, she grimaced, muttering "yuck" as she spat repeatedly.

At this moment, the car door opened again, accompanied by the wolf pup’s whining cries.

Turning around, she saw Wang Ping dragging Little Four by one ear toward the river. Still half-asleep, the reluctant pup squirmed and whimpered.

Reaching the riverbank, ignoring Yuan Xiaoxiao’s gaze, Wang Ping positioned the pup on the shore, baring his teeth and making threatening gestures with his small paw.

"Woof woof~"

The pup whined twice, reluctantly spreading its short legs and lifting its tail to relieve itself into the river.

"..." Yuan Xiaoxiao suddenly felt a lump in her throat, along with a strong urge to kick both troublemakers into the river.
