Chapter 171: You're Finally Back!
Luke didn’t even notice the tiny figure riding a rabbit several dozen meters away. After firing two more rubber bullets at the downed men, he quickly turned and sprinted toward the pickup truck.
A series of sharp cracks followed. Two lithe figures carrying backpacks leaped from their hiding spots near Anna’s hillock. Amidst shattering glass and screeching brakes, the pickup truck spun in circles, heading straight for them.
Anna and Sama dodged to either side, grabbing onto the rear compartment as the vehicle passed. Sama drew the driver’s attention while Anna unslung her backpack, opened the rear door, and jumped inside.
Shouts erupted as two disheveled figures were kicked out of the truck. The vehicle spun around and slowed to a stop as Luke approached.
"Get in!" Anna shouted from the driver's seat.
Luke hurried forward, yanked open the passenger door, pulled out the bloodied occupant, and slid in himself.
"Crap, wait for me!"
Wang Ping, still clinging to his rabbit mount, watched helplessly as the pickup roared to life, spewing dust as it sped northward.
"Damn it… Don’t leave me here!"
Wang Ping glanced back. A gray, dirt-covered pickup truck led a stampede of wild yaks charging with unstoppable fury. With his keen eyesight, Wang Ping could even make out the glint of their sharp horns.
"Hiss..."
Instinctively tightening his grip on the rabbit's ears, Wang Ping squeezed its sides with his legs. "Come on, buddy, you can do it!"
The rabbit trembled but had no time to resist, focusing solely on running for its life. If it could speak, it would surely unleash a torrent of curses. Without this burden on its back, it could’ve escaped long ago—why was he cheering it on?
The rumble of the pursuing truck grew louder as it drove the yak herd toward the battleground where everyone had been fighting moments before.
It was clear now—this was a meticulously planned operation. One team had targeted the golden eagle’s nest atop Cuiwei Ridge, waiting to capture the king eagle upon its return. Meanwhile, another group below provoked the wild yaks, intentionally driving them into a frenzy across the Gobi Desert.
Whether to eliminate or distract, the presence of the yak herd effectively blocked Team Three’s escape route while allowing the group on the ridge to retreat safely.
A simple plan, painfully obvious, yet devastatingly effective.
BANG!
A thunderous crash echoed across the wilderness, followed by the sound of shattering glass and blaring horns. When Wang Ping looked back, the windshield of the lead truck was completely shattered. It swerved wildly, made a wide turn to the north, and plunged headlong into the stampeding herd.
The sounds of collisions and trampling filled the air as the truck was flipped over by the enraged yaks, sending up clouds of dust. More yaks began turning, charging after Anna’s fleeing pickup.
Watching the disastrous fate of the sabotaged truck, Wang Ping felt a pang of relief for his teammates—but also realized that he was now relatively safe.
"This whole thing... feels like I didn’t contribute much, huh?"
As the rabbit continued accelerating, Wang Ping soon left behind the chaotic battlefield, retracing the path he’d come from. From the side, he glimpsed Anna’s vehicle stopping briefly at the foot of Chitong Mountain. A figure tossed something into the truck before it sped off eastward.
Several smoke grenades, trailing thick red smoke, were thrown from the rear compartment, obscuring the yaks’ vision. The herd grew agitated, their charge slowing as confusion set in.
By evening, as the dust settled, Gu Lang had already pitched a tent near the mountain pass. He squatted by the small river flowing through the pass, grumbling as he scrubbed his gloves.
It seemed Wolf Pup Four had either gained some understanding—or grown dumber. Ever since Gu Lang found an indescribable mess inside his glove yesterday and gave the pup a stern lecture, the little wolf had become fixated on the gloves, apparently convinced they were its personal restroom.
"Look at you," Gu Lang muttered, glaring at the wolf pup pretending to be oblivious by the campfire. "All you do is eat and poop. Can’t you do anything else? You’re supposed to be a wolf, but you are not even as smart as a dog!"
He flexed his freezing hands, especially the swollen finger on his right hand, now bright red like a malformed carrot.
"Woof woof~"
Seeing Gu Lang scold him, the wolf pup let out an indignant yowl. Then, realizing the sound eerily resembled honey badger’s voice, the pup became ecstatic.
"Woof woof~"
"Woof woof woof~"
"Woof woof woof woof~"
The little wolf hopped around excitedly, trying out new calls, leaving Gu Lang utterly exasperated.
"Stop it! Why can’t you learn proper sounds…?"
Gu Lang rolled his eyes, about to continue his rant, when the wolf pup suddenly sprinted toward the river, whimpering.
"Crap... don’t fall in!" Gu Lang rushed over, scooping up the tiny wolf. "Are you stupid? This water’s freezing—you’ll die if you fall in!"
"Woof! Woof woof!"
The pup wriggled, ignoring him, barking insistently toward the opposite bank.
Turning around, Gu Lang spotted a dust-covered honey badger trudging toward them on stubby legs. Behind him, dragging something equally dusty and resembling something freshly unearthed, came Wang Ping.
"Oh, for crying out loud!"
At the sight of Wang Ping, Gu Lang’s frustration boiled over. Cradling the wolf pup, he leaped across the narrow river and glared at Wang Ping. "You’re finally back!"
"Huh?"
Honey badger looked up, bewildered by Gu Lang’s accusatory expression.
"What’s wrong with you? Why are you acting like I owe you something the moment I return?"
"Just look at this! Look!"
Gu Lang thrust his swollen hand toward Wang Ping. "What did you do? There were bees in that hive of yours! Look what they did to me! And this damn wolf keeps pooping in my gloves—how are you even raising it?!"
“Oh, hell no, Gu Lang! Is that any way to talk to me?” Wang Ping groaned, his feet aching from the miles he had trudged across the rocky desert. Between that and the likely capture of the golden eagle, his mood was already sour. Now here stood someone practically offering himself up as a target for his frustration.
Before Gu Lang could continue his tirade, a massive, dust-covered rabbit loomed into view, startling him.
