Chapter 172: Farewell, Brother Rabbit!

As the sun was setting, on the bonfire rack by the river, a rabbit with golden, crispy skin was being turned and roasted by Gu Lang.

After an icy bath in the frigid river, Wang Ping sat naked beside the fire, drying his fur. His injured arm—scratched by the golden eagle—was now wrapped in two neat loops of bandage, courtesy of Gu Lang.

"You really went too far just to catch one rabbit," Gu Lang muttered, perched on a small folding stool while brushing seasoning onto the roasting rabbit. "And you even got hurt..." Though still grumbling, he wisely refrained from outright scolding honey badger again.

On the other side of the campfire, a makeshift rack fashioned from two forked branches held Gu Lang’s pants and gloves. Earlier, when Wang Ping had playfully thrown the rabbit at Gu Lang, the man lost his balance and landed squarely in the river. Though his waterproof jacket protected his upper body, the icy water flooded through his non-waterproof waistband, leaving him shivering in agony.

Little Four occasionally approached Wang Ping, yipping excitedly to show off its newly learned "language." Wang Ping half-heartedly patted its head, his gaze distant as he stared at the sizzling rabbit above the flames.

"Brother Rabbit, oh Brother Rabbit... what a short yet tumultuous life you’ve led!"

The reason for Wang Ping’s late return that afternoon was simple: after galloping nearly 10 kilometers, the rabbit collapsed, spitting blood. The remaining distance—almost another 10 kilometers—was covered by Wang Ping himself, dragging the dead rabbit behind him.

Under normal circumstances, even the weakest wild rabbit could easily run 30 kilometers per hour on mountainous terrain. But this particular rabbit had endured immense trauma—first as bait tied to a trap, then enduring prolonged starvation and exhaustion. Its frantic escape earlier had pushed it beyond its limits, straining both its body and heart until it finally gave out.

Of course, there was another critical factor Wang Ping conveniently overlooked: himself. For the rabbit, threats came from all sides—the poachers, the golden eagle overhead, the stampeding yaks—but none compared to the relentless weight clinging to its ears, refusing to let go. Anyone would have cracked under such pressure.

Lost in thought, Wang Ping suddenly noticed Gu Lang slicing off a piece of roasted rabbit meat and handing it over.

“Boss, try this. Is it cooked enough?”

“Oh…” Wang Ping quickly accepted the morsel, raising it slightly toward the fire as if offering a toast. “Brother Rabbit, rest in peace!”

He eagerly sank his teeth into the tender meat, ravenous after a long day.

“Mmm, so good!”

If honey badger had turned to nod approvingly at Gu Lang, the latter might have grown suspicious. But seeing Wang Ping completely absorbed in eating reassured Gu Lang that the outer layer was perfectly done.

Gu Lang sliced off another piece, stuffing it into his mouth without hesitation despite the heat. He chewed noisily, face glowing with satisfaction. Dining on freshly roasted wild rabbit beneath the starlit sky, with snow-capped mountains looming nearby, felt like pure bliss.

Ding dong!

A notification chimed from the tablet propped up on a tripod. Neither Wang Ping nor Gu Lang paid attention, but Little Four, forbidden from eating meat and restricted to milk, curiously glanced over.

“OneBigCow gifted the streamer ×2 rockets…”

“OneBigCow: Just finished dinner, but watching this made me hungry again…”

“The look on Gu Lang’s face says it all—it must be delicious.”

“Toxic content alert! I admit, I’m jealous.”

“All thanks to Boss. Having a pet like this is truly a blessing. Gu Lang simply sleeps, wakes up, and voilà—delicious food!”

“Haha, poor Little Four. No meat for him, only milk.”

“LittleFriendLily gifted the streamer ×6 yachts…”

“LittleFriendLily: What happened to Boss’s bandaged arm? Injured again?”

“Rare to see Boss au naturel these days…”

“IllegalAccount gifted the streamer ×8 super rockets…”

“IllegalAccount: Our streamer really knows how to enjoy life. Next time I go camping at Sheshan, I’ll buy a rabbit to try roasting.”

“Makes sense—I’m craving roasted rabbit now.”

“Same here. No time for highlands, but who doesn’t have time for rabbit?”

The rabbit’s golden skin glistened with homemade sauce gifted during a chicken purchase in Nyima Town. Initially accepted out of politeness, the sauce proved unexpectedly delicious.

The streamer devoured several slices in quick succession, already plotting to stock up on more jars during their next visit to Nyima Town upon returning to Rutog County. Meanwhile, Wang Ping glared indignantly as Gu Lang popped another piece into his own mouth instead of sharing.

“Grr!(╬◣д◢) ”

At Wang Ping’s growl, Little Four joined in, yowling loudly at Gu Lang.

“Alright, alright!”

Startled, Gu Lang hastily shoved the scorching meat into his mouth, wincing and fanning his tongue with tears welling up. When Wang Ping finally received his share, Gu Lang frantically spat out the burning morsel, gasping for relief.

Pleased with itself, Little Four pranced around Wang Ping, tail wagging, convinced its howls had intimidated Gu Lang into compliance. Wang Ping, busy chewing, briefly considered patting the pup’s head but decided against it—his paws were needed for holding meat. Instead, he lazily tapped the pup with his foot, his lack of enthusiasm painfully obvious.

Gu Lang rolled his eyes internally. I saved your sorry hide, and you’re treating that little troublemaker like family? And encouraging it to bare its teeth at me?

“Tch! Ungrateful pup!”

Elsewhere, under the cover of night, a battered pickup truck sped across the wilderness. From the rear compartment came faint groans.

“Hey, don’t hog all the food! Share some with me!” Park Yoo-hee lay mummy-like in the back, chest and arms immobilized with splints and bandages, staring enviously at Sama and Iru, whose gleaming teeth were visible in the dim light.

“No way! You’ve broken ribs—you can’t eat right now!” A rookie medic on the team firmly denied his request, chewing on a piece of compressed biscuit herself.

“Tsk, tsk.”

Iru, ever the mischief-maker, exaggeratedly smacked his lips to taunt Park. Unfortunately for him, his dark complexion rendered everything but his teeth invisible in the low light.

“Ugh… I’m so hungry…” Park murmured, gazing forlornly at the starry sky, tears threatening to spill.
