Chapter 172: Vikings and Medivacs
Viking: Developed after the Brood War, the Viking was humanity's answer to their lack of air superiority. Its development went through several stages: from the early prototype "Archangel" to the A1-type Viking (A1 Hybrid Armored Combat Machine), and finally to the A2-type Viking (A2 Hybrid Armored Combat Machine). While the Archangel served as an initial testbed, the A1-type Viking proved too expensive for mass production. The A2-type Viking, a more cost-effective version, entered full-scale production and became standard issue.
The Viking produced in the Starport is this A2 model—a versatile weapon capable of switching between ground mode (assault mode) and flight mode (fighter mode). Inspired by the Siege Tank’s transformation capabilities, the Viking was designed as a dual-purpose war machine for both air combat and ground support. It is equipped with a Gatling cannon, MT50 Lanzel missiles, and Wave-Antimatter Missiles for targeting clusters or large ships.
Put simply, it’s a transforming robot that shifts between jet fighter and humanoid mech modes. However, mastering its operation is no small feat; only elite pilots can endure the intense physical strain of transformation. Those who succeed become top-tier aces, while those who can’t even attempt it earn the derisive nickname—"Virgin."
Medivac: To extend the lifespan and combat endurance of Terran bio-units, the new generation of battlefield transports was upgraded with medical systems. These units heal injured soldiers on-site, allowing them to return to battle quickly rather than languishing in med-bays. Similar to the equipment used by medics, the Medivac integrates nanoscale biobot emergency systems and mechanical repair bots, albeit with enhanced power and efficiency. Beyond its medical functions, the Medivac can operate in atmospheric and deep-space environments, transporting troops to strategic locations. If necessary, it can sacrifice cargo space to mount weapons.
The Medivac also boasts two special features: an advanced afterburner propulsion system (available without additional research) that boosts speed, and the Caduceus Reactor (requiring upgrades in the Starport’s Tech Lab), which provides extended energy reserves for prolonged medical and flight operations.
Notably, Medivac pilots are all certified nurses—far gentler than the rowdy Marines.

Tang Fang moved the cursor over the "Viking" option in the production menu.
Cost: 150 minerals, 75 gas, occupying 2 supply slots—just like in the game.
Next, he hovered over the Medivac.
"What?" His jaw nearly dropped when he saw the price tag: 400 minerals, 400 gas—four times the resource cost compared to the game, though the supply requirement remained at 2.
"This is highway robbery," Tang Fang muttered, silently thanking the heavens he didn’t have heart problems.
Sure, Overlords consumed three times the resources of their in-game counterparts, but they were over 30 meters long—comparable in size to frigates. Their higher cost made sense. But the Medivac?
Wait… an idea struck him. Capable of carrying Thors, the Medivac must be significantly larger than Siege Tanks. Realistically, it would likely measure around 40 meters in length.
Overlords were 30+ meters and cost three times the in-game amount. Medivacs were 40+ meters and cost four times as much. So what about Battlecruisers? Even the smallest ones stretched over 500 meters.
Glancing at the grayed-out Battlecruiser icon, Tang Fang felt a bitter taste rise in his mouth.
After the assault on the airbase, his resources had increased slightly, standing at 52,795 minerals and 3,500 gas. Producing 20 Vikings was feasible, but splitting resources to include Medivacs would strain his budget. At 400 gas each, the cost was daunting.
Still, Overlords were slow and conspicuous. In contrast, Medivacs offered speed, versatility, medical capabilities, and safety.
They had to be built—but how many? This dilemma weighed heavily on Tang Fang. With the impending trip to the Arctic main battlefield, dogfights were inevitable. Too few Vikings would put immense pressure on ground forces.
"Commander, a suspicious index was flagged during data decryption," Emma’s voice chimed in just as Tang Fang hesitated.
"Hmm? What suspicious index?"
"The specific content has been deleted by Saxton Leonard. Only a blank document titled 'Skíðblaðnir Plan' remains."
"Deleted? Can you recover it, Emma?"
"The data has been permanently erased and cannot be recovered." After a pause, Emma added, "Commander, structural scans of the facility revealed traces of manual modifications in one area. There may be a connection."
"You think Saxton Leonard is hiding something?"
"It’s highly likely."
"Where is that area?"
Emma didn’t respond verbally but sent a 3D terrain map directly to Tang Fang’s mind.
"50 kilometers north?" Tang Fang thought for a moment before issuing the order: "Emma, plot a course. I’m going to check out whatever trick Saxton Leonard is up to."
"Yes, Commander."
He queued up a single Medivac for production and exited the system interface.
"Let’s head to the surface," Tang Fang said.
Arroz nodded, instructing the Marauders to destroy the central database before departing.
Ten minutes later, they reached the surface. With a flash of silver light, Tang Fang summoned the Medivac, its massive 40-meter frame blotting out much of the sky.
Arroz glanced up, his eyes gleaming briefly. He’d grown accustomed to Tang Fang’s surprises.
"Board up," Tang Fang called, grabbing a cable and ascending rapidly.
"What about Housen?"
"He’s having too much fun. We’ll pick him up later."
The Medivac’s interior was spacious, equipped with radar systems, terrain mappers, infrared scanners, low-light imaging, atmospheric monitoring, satellite communications—and leather seats far superior to the Overlord’s ventral sacs. For once, Tang Fang felt the expense might be justified.
Excluding the cockpit, engines, and other equipment, the transport bay measured roughly 20 meters long and 6 meters wide. Based on Marine armor dimensions, it could carry over 50 troops or two Siege Tanks, four Hellion, or even suspend larger units like Thors beneath the fuselage.
With a roar of flames from its rear thrusters, the Medivac lit up the night sky, streaking toward the north. Minutes later, it arrived at Emma’s designated location. After receiving confirmation from the nurse pilot, Tang Fang and Arroz slid down cables to the snowy ground below.
Ahead lay a polar weather monitoring station, dark and silent. Following Emma’s guidance, they approached a patch of snow near the structure.
"Commander, the hidden area altered by Saxton Leonard lies 100 meters underground."
Tang Fang nodded, summoning a Firebat from the system interface. Pointing to the ground, he ordered, "Melt the ice."
"Understood." The Firebat activated its massive "Hellfire" flamethrowers, unleashing waves of superheated plasma. Within moments, the surrounding ice melted away, revealing a titanium alloy floor beneath.
"As expected." Summoning a Stalker, Tang Fang directed its particle disruptor cannon to blast open a gap. With the Medivac’s assistance, they descended into the hidden underground facility.
Following Emma’s directions, they reached a control panel. Pulling the master switch, Tang Fang heard the hum of electrical systems powering up. Bright lights illuminated the vast chamber.
Looking through the glass window above the control panel, Tang Fang gazed into the central hall of the underground facility. Spanning nearly a million square meters, the platform was equipped with welding tools, robotic arms, towering cranes, diagnostic instruments, and engineering gear.
"Assembly workshop? Or maintenance facility? Emma, any useful data?"
"Commander, all data in this region’s central computer has been wiped. No usable information was retrieved."
"This is strange." Tang Fang left the control room, descending stairs to the platform’s center. Such a colossal underground facility—millions of square meters and over a kilometer tall—couldn’t possibly exist without purpose. Cain Rudolf wasn’t reckless enough to spend billions of MYD on a mere assembly bay for show.
Squinting, Tang Fang noticed transparent crystal conduits attached to mechanical frames. Tracing their path outward, his gaze landed on a corner device resembling a fuel tank.
"Huh? What’s this?"
