"Element Zero... it's Element Zero..." Tang Fang muttered to himself, swallowing hard as he stared at the elemental symbol etched onto the surface of the massive tank.
What was this place? What purpose did it serve? Was it a resource depot for the cruiser fleet stationed at Hatto Spaceport? But something about it didn’t quite fit that theory.
"Arroz, what do you think?" Tang Fang asked, turning to his companion.
Arroz didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he lifted the hatch on his helmet and took a deep breath. His voice came out low and steady: "I smell trouble."
"You’re starting to sound like Housen with all this sixth-sense nonsense," Tang Fang said, shaking his head in exasperation.
"I can smell EZero burning in engines," Arroz explained.
"Forget it. We’ll deal with whatever comes our way when we get there," Tang Fang said, brushing aside his doubts. He gestured for one of the larvae to evolve into a worker drone, then issued the command to construct an extractor.
2954, 2958, 3112…
The gas readings climbed rapidly. Perhaps due to the sheer abundance of EZero, extraction was proceeding at lightning speed, increasing by roughly 500 units per minute.
An hour and a half later, the system’s gas counter stopped ticking, settling at 49,480—a staggering increase of over 46,000 units. Meanwhile, crystal values continued their slow but steady climb, though the rate had slowed significantly. It seemed Housen’s strike team had already mopped up most of the visible enemy forces.
Glancing at the timer on the UI interface, Tang Fang noted that more than two hours had passed since they launched their surprise attack. It was time to head back and retrieve Claire before making their way to the Arctic.
After signaling Arroz and sending a retreat message to Housen, Tang Fang set the timer on the bomb and joined Arroz aboard the Medivac. With a roar akin to a volcanic eruption, the ship's thrusters flared, propelling them westward across the horizon.
Fifteen minutes later, the trio regrouped with Claire just outside the trading group’s compound. Tang Fang recalled all combat units and led the way into the residential area.
Chaos reigned within the district. News of the assault on the Antarctic Air Force Base had spread like wildfire, sending merchants into a panic. Some were already packing up their belongings, preparing to flee Krotan entirely. Greed might be the lifeblood of traders, but when push came to shove, survival always trumped profit.
Dodging the frenzied crowds, the three made their way to Phillip’s trading group headquarters. The ground-floor lobby was eerily empty; Alma was nowhere to be found. They ascended to the second floor and turned left, where Tang Fang pushed open the door to the meeting room where Claire was waiting.
Alma sat on a couch near the entrance, while Phillip had returned, along with old Benny. Claire, who had been awake for some time now, looked much better than before. Hearing the door creak open, the group stood up as one upon seeing the safe return of Tang Fang and his companions.
Phillip let out a relieved sigh. "Thank goodness you’re alright." Clearly, he had no idea of the full extent of Tang Fang’s capabilities. Though news of the airbase attack had rippled through the region, military officials had kept the specifics under wraps.
Of everyone present, only Claire had any inkling of what Tang Fang might have been capable of. Earlier, he’d simply mentioned having “one more thing to take care of” before leaving. She assumed he meant rallying soldiers or planning strategy—but when rumors of the airbase raid reached them, followed shortly by Phillip rushing back, she realized the truth: Tang Fang’s mysterious errand had been nothing short of an assault on the government’s air force stronghold.
It was madness—utter insanity. And yet, somehow, knowing him, it made perfect sense. This was exactly the kind of reckless brilliance only he could pull off.
"I never imagined you’d go so far as to raid an airbase," Claire said, shaking her head with a wry smile. "I should’ve seen it coming."
Old Benny, his hair streaked with gray, glanced at the trio. "So? Did you manage to slip away without being detected?"
"Hah!" Housen snatched a cold cup of coffee from the table and downed it in a few gulps. "Detected? Those cowards at the airbase practically wet themselves. They wouldn’t dare follow us if their lives depended on it."
"No detection is good," Benny said, exhaling deeply. Truthfully, he harbored reservations about their reckless actions. While Marion had saved both him and Phillip’s lives in the past, that didn’t give them carte blanche to act recklessly. The trading group consisted of over a hundred members, and dragging them into danger wasn’t something Benny took lightly as its leader. Bringing Tang Fang, Claire, and the others to their compound had cost a fortune in bribes and favors. Yet these three hotheads refused to lay low, instead stirring up trouble right under the military’s nose.
Still, looking at the commotion outside, it seemed as though the government forces had suffered a crushing defeat. How had three individuals managed such a feat?
"Enough talk," Tang Fang interjected. "Claire, gather whoever’s coming with us. Time waits for no one. Every moment we linger here puts Marion and the others at greater risk." Turning to Phillip, he added, "Old Phillip, thank you for your hospitality these past few days."
"Young man, if fate allows, we must share a drink someday," Phillip replied, his sharp eyes betraying years of leadership experience.
"Agreed," Tang Fang nodded, stepping out of the room. Arroz and Claire followed close behind. Housen lingered for a moment, exchanging longing glances with Alma, before reluctantly tearing himself away to catch up.
Claire had brought twenty-odd people, mostly young rebels, predominantly women, with only five men among them. The group blended into the chaos of fleeing merchants as they exited the compound. Not far ahead, the Medivac descended slowly from the sky.
"This…" Claire froze at the sight of the vessel. Housen smirked knowingly. "Looted it from the airport."
She shot him a glare. Marion’s network in Krotan ran deep, and she knew the models of the military’s primary aircraft like the back of her hand. This craft was unlike anything she’d ever seen—a cutting-edge aerospace transport, not some scavenged wreck. Did he really think she was that gullible?
"Board first. We’ll explain once we’re airborne," Tang Fang said, gripping the cable as he rose into the air. The others followed suit, allowing the cables to lift them aboard.
"To the Arctic," Tang Fang instructed the pilot. Then, pacing toward Claire and the others, he raised his gaze to meet theirs. "Listen carefully. I have the means—and the ability—to break the siege at the Arctic base. But before we proceed, I need your word on one condition."
"Talosal, just say it. My life is yours to command," declared a scarred man. Tang Fang recognized him from their shared drinks in the Arctic—his name was Habakuk.
"Yes, anything to save General Marion. Our lives are yours," the others chimed in.
"No, no, no," Tang Fang chuckled, waving his hand. "I don’t want your lives. You’re my friends." Pausing, he lowered his voice. "Here’s my condition: From this point forward, regardless of what you see—things you may understand or not, normal or otherwise—you can watch, listen, gasp, even fear. But you mustn’t ask questions or challenge me. Can you promise that?"
The group exchanged confused glances. Finally, Claire rolled her eyes and spoke softly. "To be honest, ever since the battle at Brave Bastion ended, none of us have thought of you as human anymore. Isn’t it natural for strange things to happen around you?"
"Uh…" Tang Fang blinked, taken aback. "What do you mean, ‘not human’? Do I look like some kind of monster?"
Claire gave him a gentle, almost tender smile, then nodded firmly. "Yes."
…
The waves lapped gently against the ice shelf, countless floes bobbing on the surface. Snowflakes shimmered under the dim sunlight, casting a delicate veil over the frozen expanse.
As the Medivac’s cargo bay opened, biting cold winds swirled into the cabin, howling against the walls. Through the gloomy sky, Tang Fang’s gaze fixed on the distant plumes of smoke rising from the battlefield. Against the biting wind, he licked his pale lips and spoke without turning back. "Let’s move."
Fire crackled across the icy plains, dancing atop the oil-streaked wreckage of steel. Explosions lit up the yellowish sky and silver-white earth like fireworks on New Year’s Eve, blossoming and scattering in every direction. Smoke blanketed the horizon, while flashes of gunfire illuminated faces etched with exhaustion, tension, determination, sorrow, and rage. Crimson blood stained the endless snowy fields, painting vivid splashes of red against the dazzling white.
The crunch of treads breaking through ice echoed as Rhino tanks unleashed barrages, sending shards of ice flying like arrows. The relentless chatter of gunfire mingled with the whistling screams of rockets, forming the symphony of war in this polar wasteland.
Overhead, fighter jets screamed past, dropping missiles that obliterated turrets and buildings. Swarms of drones rained cluster rockets onto defensive positions, their buzzing forms blotting out the sky. On the horizon, a tide of gray-brown surged forward—tanks, armored vehicles, snowmobiles, and mechanized infantry crashing toward the rebel stronghold like an unstoppable wave.
"Boom, boom, boom…" Fire flashed, guns roared, and explosions traced a straight line across the snowy plain.
Saber-Tooth’s mounted cannons spat bullets into the snow, kicking up clouds of ice shards.
Two government legions, numbering nearly 200,000 troops, had crossed oceans and landed on the ice, launching a full-scale assault on the Arctic Command Center of the resistance.
The roar of turrets and the thunder of missile launchers filled the air above the base. The rebels clung stubbornly to their outer defenses, repelling wave after wave of government attacks.
