Chapter 158: The Planeswalker's War Part 2

Brandon opened the book.

On page seventeen, his slender finger paused at the second line. "Unlocking this card requires a payment of one hundred wealth," the book intoned. A card materialized in his hand, and Brandon lowered his eyelids as he responded, "Unlock." In an instant, a third of the three hundred eighteen wealth he had accumulated over the past month—sacrificed by forgoing the summoning of Metissa—was gone.

Raising the card, Brandon placed it forward and spoke: "Reflections of the starry sky, wondrous and intricate—"

Pressing his thumb, index, and middle fingers against the card’s surface, he displayed it downward. "Display card: Eternal Sphere."

Eternal Sphere
(Relic of Myriad Wonders IX)
10 Any, 10 Mana
[Artifact – Relic/Fantasy]
Place horizontally, pay 5 Any. Choose the next card to enter the field and provide it with a perfect replica.
The Eternal Sphere can only maintain one illusion on the field at a time.
'Reflections of the starry sky, wondrous and intricate—'

Brandon paid ten points of fire element, his mana draining accordingly.

The card hovered mid-air, transforming into a mysterious array of light. From it emerged a fist-sized orb of mercury, encircled by seventeen brass rings. It floated near Brandon’s left shoulder. Kabirus, upon seeing the object, froze momentarily before its soulfire flickered with alarm. As an undead being highly sensitive to magical energy and soul power, it immediately sensed something extraordinary:

This was a Fantasy Artifact—a gold-grade magical item.

Kabirus could scarcely comprehend how a silver-rank summoner, even bolstered by his iron-peak Elementalist class, could summon a fantasy-grade artifact across ranks. Yet, for the first time, it felt a genuine threat. No longer could it allow Brandon to prepare further. Though it doubted victory against such strange elemental forces, a primal urgency gripped Kabirus, compelling it to tighten its grip on the short spear in its claws. With a defiant roar, the towering skeleton general prepared to charge.

As for Roscoe, that coward—it was beyond caring now.

But Brandon, too, felt the pressure of time. He spent five points of fire element to place the Eternal Sphere horizontally. Then, drawing a second card—one of the four Fate Cards he had kept ready in his hand—he raised it, placed it down, and declared:

"Merciful light descends from the heavens; the divine emissary emerges from the radiance—"

Though Brandon’s calm gaze reflected the approaching spear in Kabirus’s grasp, he pointed forward. A blinding flash erupted, and pristine white feathers rained down. Four pairs of wings flared to life, shielding Brandon as two resounding clangs echoed through the air. Kabirus hesitated, its hollow eye sockets flickering with doubt—

It had been halted.

The towering skeleton general saw its short spear caught between two gleaming longswords. Inscribed with arcane runes and patterns that climbed along their blades, these swords bore the celestial script—the sacred language from beyond the Gates of Order, known only to the proud denizens of light.

Kabirus looked up.

Two Archangels of Sanctity, formed of pure light and wielding crossed swords, floated beside Brandon. Their chins were raised high, their expressions disdainful as they blocked the way forward. Behind the interlocking blades stood Brandon, holding his open black tome, meeting Kabirus’s gaze with unwavering calm.

"Silver upper rank—" The skeleton general forced out each word through gritted teeth.

Brandon offered a faint smile. Anger surged within Kabirus, its soulfire blazing. Letting out a low growl, it retreated slightly. A silver upper-rank opponent wouldn’t stop it—not even with the element of surprise—but against a true gold mid-rank adversary, a silver-rank existence was little more than cannon fodder. Gripping the ground with its massive bone claw, Kabirus leapt forward, its spear carving a blinding red arc.

Brandon stepped back, commanding the two Archangels of Sanctity to intercept.

A deafening crash rang out as both angels were sent flying.

But it was enough.

By the time the Archangels of Sanctity entered the field, Brandon had already retrieved Wind Spirit Spider and Highland Squire from his graveyard (When Archangel of Sanctity enters the battlefield, return a non-black card from your graveyard to your deck.). Kabirus broke through the angels’ defense in an instant, but Brandon had already readied the pale-gray Highland Squire card, flicking it forward.

"Courage of the Highlands."

In a burst of white light, a familiar yet disheveled young man stumbled out of the array, clutching his head. "By Marsha’s grace, my lord!" Chael rolled forward, his voice laced with excitement. "I can’t believe you summoned me so quickly! My lord, you are truly the wisest Highland Knight… ah!"

He ducked just in time as another angel soared overhead, crashing into the ruins nearby with a thunderous boom.

Chael glanced at the wreckage, visibly shaken.

But Brandon merely smiled.

His fingers moved to page nine, line three. "Fate Card: Trial."

"Unlocking this card requires eighty wealth," the book replied. Brandon nodded, raising the card. "Display Trial—"

He placed the card downward.

Trial
(Wolf Den II)
Earth 10
[Event – Exploration]
The summoned creature gains 250,000 experience.
'To the Ronians, the Wolf Den Altar is less a physical haven and more a spiritual refuge—'

"Attach to?" a voice whispered in his mind as the card appeared.

Brandon gestured toward Chael, who was still cowering, and declared, "Attach."

The Trial card vanished, but in its place, another card materialized before Brandon:

Highland Mage
(Knight IX)
Water 5
[Creature – Human/Wizard, Level 45]
When Highland Mage enters the battlefield, grant +5 Prestige weekly.
Upkeep Cost: Pay 2 Earth Element daily to maintain this card on the field.
'Courage of the Highlands'

Brandon blinked, instinctively looking up as a column of white light descended from the heavens. Chael stood at its center, his plain robe bathed in soft radiance. Intricate patterns emerged on the fabric, and three gray-white rings adorned its edges—the unmistakable insignia of a seventh-tier Highland Mage. The young man stared at himself, bewildered, then held out his hand, where a golden wand materialized.

"What is this…?" Chael gasped, turning to see the second angel careening past him. Without hesitation, he extended his hand, creating a translucent cushion of energy that gently caught the falling angel. Looking at Brandon, his eyes sparkled with joy.

"Gold-rank strength," Brandon murmured, nodding. His expression unchanged, he issued a command: "Chael, Stasis Domain."

The newly minted wizard knew precisely how to cooperate with his lord. He had already spotted Kabirus barreling through the angels’ defenses. Shaking his head, Chael thought, These skeletons are reckless. Pointing his wand at the charging undead, he declared, "The laws of time, stagnation and imprisonment—" A transparent wall materialized, and with a push from Chael, Kabirus slammed into it.

The undead lord felt its movements slow to a crawl. Startled, it looked up to find yet another gold-rank opponent before it—

A seventh-tier Highland Mage.

Kabirus felt its soulfire on the verge of collapse. By Marsha’s grace, did this human have an endless supply of reinforcements? How many gold-rank fighters did he command?

The skeleton lord’s jaw hung slack, its soulfire dimming as the shadow of defeat enveloped it. Unlike warriors, wizards might lack self-defense, but their spells were devastatingly potent. Especially Rule Wizards like Highland Mages, whose arcane magics were nearly impossible to evade. Once ensnared in their rules, even higher-ranked warriors rarely stood a chance.

And this was the work of a seventh-tier master wizard.

Kabirus understood its only hope lay in ending the battle before the enemy cast another spell. But Brandon, standing before Chael, extinguished the last ember of its delusion.

Holding his tome, Brandon gazed pityingly at the towering skeleton general and shook his head.

"Kabirus, farewell," he said softly.

The words pierced Kabirus’s heart. Trapped in the Stasis Domain, it thrashed and roared in defiance. Yet within the transparent wall, it felt its limbs bound by invisible chains, its movements sluggish as a snail’s. Meanwhile, Brandon revealed his final summoning card:

Wind Spirit Spider.

By now, Brandon was far stronger than he had been during the auction. With ample mana reserves, he summoned a swarm of fifty spiders. As the azure arachnids descended onto the street, everyone—even Chael—stared in disbelief. Why would their young lord summon creatures weaker than iron rank?

While their numbers might have been useful in the past, here they seemed utterly redundant. Unless used for reconnaissance, even then, the faster Archangels would serve better. To Tiger Finch, Chael, and the wild elf sisters, Brandon’s decision appeared wasteful.

But their opinions couldn’t sway him. Unperturbed, Brandon sifted through his remaining cards: Holy Sword, Blade of the White Sun, and Golden Banner. From them, he drew the Fate Card: Holy Sword.

Raising it, he paid the cost and attached the card to Wind Spirit Spider.

At that moment—

Everyone saw ethereal holy swords, each adorned with wings, appear behind every spider, hovering in the air like floating blades—fifty in total. Brandon smiled faintly. Raising his hand, the Wind Spirit Spiders arranged themselves into a massive formation behind him.

It was a phalanx of radiant swords stretching across the sky.

Brandon turned to Chael.

"This…" the young wizard stammered, dumbfounded.

"So I’ve named this technique," Brandon replied, gazing steadily at Kabirus trapped in the domain. "Let’s call it the ‘Dragoon System.’"

He raised his hand, fingers splayed wide. "Dragoons, advance!"
