Chapter 157: The Planeswalker's War Part 1
In the grand tapestry of all-encompassing laws—
Between the hours of two and six in the morning, a time known to the Matatanians as the "Dark Slumber," when the earth and the world itself rest; the Planeswalkers refer to it as the "Recovery Phase." This is the final stage of their daily cycle—a period during which they shuffle cards from the field back into their deck, recalibrate their mana reserves, and strategize anew for what lies ahead.
The Code of the Planeswalkers
---
"Fleur," Brandon’s gaze settled on the pair of wild elf sisters.
"My lord, is there something you require?" Fleur, the elder sister, asked with a start, her emerald-green eyes locking onto him with an expression that was neither warm nor cold, but decidedly distrustful.
"Make your Elemental Pool resonate."
"What?"
"Initiate elemental resonance." Brandon repeated, his tone unwavering.
"My lord, you…"
This time, even Roscoe, who had been lurking in the shadows, joined the sisters in stunned silence. Truth be told, initiating elemental resonance wasn’t particularly extraordinary. On the contrary, every elven adept instructor made it a point to have their apprentices induce such resonance within their Elemental Pools during training. It allowed novices to feel the harmony between the elements firsthand, fostering a deeper connection between new Elementalists and the six primal forces.
But beyond that, elemental resonance served no practical purpose.
So why was he asking for this?
Fleur, Tia, and Roscoe were utterly bewildered. The only explanation they could fathom was that Brandon intended to become an Elementalist on the spot. But that was absurd. Becoming an Elementalist wasn’t merely about gaining the approval of the six elements—it was a complex, systematic discipline akin to wizardry. Without years of study, no outsider could hope to master it through shortcuts.
Realizing this, Fleur hesitated, her expression conflicted. Meanwhile, Tia, ever more direct, chimed in with a sharp retort: "My lord, forgive me, but this idea seems rather far-fetched."
"Tia—" Fleur gritted her teeth in warning.
But Brandon had no time for further explanations. He glanced at Kabirus, who stood nearby in a defensive stance, and calmly replied, "Do as I say, Fleur."
Reluctantly, Fleur nodded. Closing her eyes, she silently willed her Elemental Pool to surge. Though elemental resonance posed little risk to the caster, it did cause stored elemental energy to dissipate into thin air—a costly act, especially on the battlefield. Still, if her lord commanded it, she had no choice but to comply.
At the same moment—
A line of ghostly green text flickered before Brandon’s eyes:
"Detected Mentor System. Would you like to take up a secondary class?"
"One moment, please."
Brandon opened his experience system internally:
XP: 64420 (Civilian Level 1: —, Militia Level 6, 0/200, Mercenary Level 26, 475/55537)
The 54989 XP he’d saved since earning the Perfect Plot Reward—originally earmarked for a Fate Talent Task—had grown to 64420 after several battles throughout the day. Yet now, staring at the numbers, Brandon hesitated. He knew full well that committing these points would disrupt his carefully laid plans. The progress he’d made toward unlocking his second talent would vanish, forcing him to start over—a process that could take weeks or months, given how rare perfect plot rewards truly were.
But he had no other option. Coming here had already sealed his resolve.
Brandon unlocked the XP allocation system—
The verdant text shifted again: "Please allocate XP."
"Increase Scholar rank to Level 15."
"Scholar rank increased to Level 15. First free secondary class slot unlocked."
"Secondary class: Elementalist."
"Use free class slot?"
"Yes."
As Brandon confirmed his decision, Fleur’s eyes snapped open. Her widened, gemstone-like green irises bore into him, filled with disbelief. Tia clapped a hand over her mouth, staring at Brandon as though he were some mythical creature. Meanwhile, Roscoe, the young necromancer hidden in the shadows, coughed violently, nearly stumbling out of the alleyway in shock.
"What’s going on? Roscoe, you fool—explain yourself!" Kabirus bellowed, finally sensing something amiss. Yet, being neither a wizard nor an Elementalist, it couldn’t perceive the restless hum of the six elements vibrating through the night air. They swirled around Brandon, pulsing with a mix of unease and jubilation, celebrating the birth of a new Elementalist upon the land of Vonder.
Elementalists—the enforcers of the Elemental Laws.
The most steadfast allies of the Four Elven Kings.
And yet, as Brandon watched, rows of glowing green text danced across his vision:
"Elemental contract established."
"Resonance frequency adjusted."
"Potential spellcasting attribute 'Bloodline' activated."
"Secondary class acquired."
When the text faded, reality seemed to snap back into focus. All that remained were the varied expressions of the wild elf sisters. Fleur opened her mouth, struggling visibly before finally managing to speak. "Congratulations, my lord…" she said, her voice layered with complexity.
"Welcome to the world of the Elementalists."
"It’s absolutely incredible, my lord," Tia added, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and awe.
"Hold on," Tiger Finch interjected. "Are you saying…" He turned back to Brandon, his gaze heavy with suspicion.
Fleur simply nodded.
Silence reigned—
"This is impossible!" Kabirus roared, breaking the tension. It took a step forward, stomping so hard that a stone slab beneath its foot shattered with a loud crack. "Roscoe, are you playing games with me? No one can become an Elementalist just by feeling elemental synergy unless the Elemental Emperor Tumen himself has returned!"
"But my lord, I’m not joking. This is just…" Roscoe trailed off, slapping his forehead in disbelief. Even witnessing it firsthand, he struggled to comprehend how such a thing could occur.
For a moment, everyone fell silent, their eyes fixed on the young man. After a long pause, Kabirus managed to muster a rebuttal: "Perhaps this is indeed unbelievable, but what do you hope to achieve, young human? Do you think scaring me will make me yield? What can a newly minted Elementalist possibly do against me?"
Though its words sounded defiant, there was an unmistakable tremor of uncertainty in its voice. Who knew what other tricks this cursed youth might pull?
But Brandon merely glanced at it.
Lowering his eyelids, he reviewed his stats. After acquiring the Elementalist class, his total Elemental Pool capacity had increased by two slots across all elements, with Fire gaining an additional three. Both Light and Dark Elemental Pools had also opened, each with two slots. As expected, the bonuses were lower than those granted to players, but that didn’t matter. This was only the beginning.
For tonight, the real spectacle was just getting started.
Brandon reopened the XP allocation system. Pausing briefly, he directed the remaining points toward his newly acquired Elementalist class:
"Elementalist Level 1: Requires 6 XP."
"Confirm allocation."
"Elementalist Level 2: Requires 10 XP."
"Confirm allocation."
...
"Elementalist Level 10: Requires 610 XP."
Fleur’s face paled. "Th-this can’t be…" she stammered, her voice trembling. If earlier she had harbored doubts, now she felt as though she were trapped in a dream. The rapidly increasing density of elements swirling around Brandon seemed like something out of legend—a fantastical tale unfolding before her very eyes. Never had she imagined an Elementalist could ascend so quickly. No, this wasn’t mere speed—it was something else entirely.
It was as if he were riding a rocket.
Unless he was chosen by the gods themselves, no mortal could ascend so swiftly. But the gods had long since vanished from the earth. By Marsha’s grace, Fleur thought, her mind reeling, what sorcery is this?
Yet Brandon showed no concern for the shock rippling through the group. His levels continued to rise:
"Elementalist Level 17: Requires 4620 XP."
"Elementalist Level 18: Requires 6333 XP."
...
"Elementalist Level 22: Requires 12870 XP."
At Level 22, Brandon finally paused. Glancing at the remaining 300-odd XP in his pool, he sighed softly. It was unfortunate that the primary attributes for an Elementalist were Willpower, Bloodline, and Perception, rather than Strength, Agility, or Constitution. Otherwise, combined with his existing roles, he might have broken through the Elemental Wall and entered the Awakened Affinity phase.
Still, he didn’t regret his choice. Nor had he come away empty-handed. Checking his Elemental Pool once more, he noted the results:
Fire Elemental Pool: 37 slots.
Other Elemental Pools: 32 slots each.
Light and Dark Elemental Pools: 24 slots each.
Raising his head, he locked eyes with Kabirus.
"Iron Rank peak…" the towering undead lord growled through clenched teeth. "Is that all?"
"That’s all."
Upon hearing this, Kabirus exhaled deeply, visibly relieved. For a moment, it had feared the young man might shatter the Elemental Barrier right then and there—an impossibility, surely, yet stranger things had happened tonight. In its eyes, this human was precisely the kind of being who could turn impossibilities into reality.
Thankfully, the world still followed some semblance of logic. Kabirus felt a wave of gratitude wash over it.
But Brandon spoke, his voice cutting through the quiet. "Do you remember what I said earlier?"
"What?"
"I told you that if you wished to return to the Hills of the Dead and rule your domain, I would give you one last chance."
Kabirus froze.
Instinctively, it turned, only to see Roscoe bolting away. "Roscoe, you coward! What are you doing?" Kabirus snarled. But when it spun back around, it found the human who had been facing it withdrawing something from his cloak—a book.
A black-covered tome.
"But alas, you’ve lost your chance," Brandon said coolly. "Kabirus."
