Chapter 129: The Plan

How could he break through so quickly?

While Leon was still searching for an exit and had resorted to tearing down walls with brute force, the deeply embedded rebel immediately sensed something amiss. Feeling the dungeon shudder violently under successive blows, the scarred chief’s brow furrowed in frustration.

He hadn’t expected to trap them indefinitely—only to buy time for his comrades to escape—but their opponent’s reaction was far quicker than anticipated. Rather than wasting precious moments trying to climb out of the looped stairwell, Leon had gone straight for demolition. And now, before the chief had even left the Secret Investigation Bureau, the illusion was beginning to crumble.

“What’s wrong?”

The female prisoner, her handcuffs recently removed, eyed him warily. “Could it be… the Cleansing Bureau has made a move?”

“No,” the scarred man replied, shaking his head. “The chief of the Cleansing Bureau Virgo Branch is extraordinarily powerful. Even with most of her strength tied up guarding anomalies, she’s not someone we can handle directly. If she were involved, we’d already be as good as dead.”

His expression darkened further. “The problem lies with the person inside the real dungeon. He’s currently destroying it piece by piece. Once he demolishes the actual structure, my replicated version will collapse.”

“What?!” Another young man nearby, visibly stunned, interjected. “I twisted the upper and lower levels of the stairwell together! Shouldn’t a normal person have spent at least some time climbing around? It hasn’t even been thirty seconds since he entered, and he’s already smashing through walls?”

“I don’t know how he figured it out either, but now isn’t the time to dwell on that.” The scarred chief strode briskly across the deserted halls of the Secret Investigation Bureau, stopping by a window to glance toward the Cleansing Bureau. After a moment of contemplation, he turned to address his two companions.

“You two leave. Take the intelligence I’ve gathered back with you. I’ll stay behind.”

“Barton!” The younger man protested, his voice tinged with urgency. “You can’t stay here! We’re too close to the Virgo Bureau. Even if our abilities barely create ripples, they could still attract attention. If that woman decides to act, you won’t stand a chance.”

“It doesn’t matter. When I accepted this undercover mission, I prepared myself for the possibility of sacrifice. Besides, this isn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. A few days ago, after hearing about that man’s abilities from Samantha, I already resolved to do this.”

He pulled out a warrant, prying open its casing to reveal a small listening device hidden within. Holding it up for the others to see, he continued calmly, “Just like this one, there’s another ‘ear’ concealed in the warrant I gave to Isha. While he interrogated Samantha earlier, I was upstairs eavesdropping.”

Turning to the female prisoner, he added, “Samantha, you’ve experienced his interrogation twice. You understand just how terrifying the new recruit from the Virgo Bureau is. Whether you speak or remain silent, it makes no difference—he’ll extract the answers he seeks. That ability is far too dangerous for us. No one can keep secrets from him. If he starts helping Isha hunt down our people, none of us will escape. Eventually, we’ll all be captured. This man must die.”

“I agree… I feel the same way as Barton,” Samantha said, clenching her fists tightly. Her eyes widened with fear as she nodded. “That man… he’s like a demon. I’m not just talking about his manipulative tactics—it’s the aura he exudes. Honestly, when I looked at him, I sometimes felt hallucinations, as if horns sprouted from his head. If we can eliminate him now, even at a cost, it might be worth it…”

“But does it have to be Barton who stays behind?” The young man argued desperately. “We’re operating in the shadows while he moves in the open. There’ll be other chances to deal with him later—framing him, kidnapping his family, launching a surprise attack…”

“No, those methods likely wouldn’t work against him,” Barton interrupted, shaking his head thoughtfully. “After hearing what Samantha told me, I knew I wanted to take care of him. But when Isha suddenly brought him to our doorstep, it caught me off guard. At the very moment I considered taking action against him, he glanced up at me almost simultaneously.”

Pausing for emphasis, Barton concluded, “If I’m correct, his ability consumes very little energy and may remain active constantly. Any hostile intent directed at him would alert him instantly, giving him time to prepare.”

“Wait… Are you saying…” Samantha gasped, realization dawning on her face. “Before coming downstairs, he already sensed your hostility toward him? Does that mean…”

“That’s right. The situation is exactly as you imagine,” Barton admitted, his tone laced with resignation. “By the time he began questioning you, he likely already suspected something. Then, once he and Isha entered the dungeon and repeatedly saw my name on the logbook, he probably pieced together my identity. You are essentially tricked by him into handing over your anomaly to him willingly.”

“…”

“But it wasn’t entirely fruitless,” Barton added, attempting to console the visibly distraught woman. “Though he deduced I was suspicious, he also revealed to me that he knew I was a spy. That’s why I altered the dungeon beforehand, creating this opportunity to deal with him directly.”

His gaze hardened with determination. “So listen to me. Both of you need to leave now. The enhancements I’ve placed on you aren’t extensive, but they’re enough to help you evade anyone along the way and escape beyond the municipal district.”

The young man hesitated. “But what about you…?”

“Go!”

“At least make sure Barton’s intel gets delivered safely.”

“…”

With a heavy sigh, the young man stamped his foot in frustration before hoisting Samantha onto his back. Without looking back, he sprinted out of the empty hall of the Secret Investigation Bureau.

It was daytime, and the streets were bustling with pedestrians. Yet strangely, everyone seemed oblivious to the pair’s presence. As they passed by, people vanished one by one, only to reappear farther away moments later—as though they existed in separate worlds.

Go on, Barton thought, watching their retreating figures from the entrance of the bureau. As long as the information get delivered, my years of infiltration won’t have been in vain.

Raising a hand to trace the jagged scar running down his cheek to his ear, Barton allowed himself a faint, resigned smile. Turning toward the stairwell, he muttered softly, “At worst, it’s one life for two. Not a bad trade.”

And since he no longer expected to return… he might as well make a bigger scene.
