Chapter 128: The Dungeon

“Leon?”

The female police officer stationed at the door couldn’t help but blink in surprise as Leon emerged from the room, barely ten minutes after entering. He had something clutched in his hand.

"Already done with your questions?" she asked, her tone tinged with curiosity.

"Yeah."

Leon nodded curtly. "I didn’t have many questions, so it didn’t take long… By the way, what about that chief of yours at the Secret Investigation Bureau? Anything strange about him?"

Strange? Why was he suddenly asking this?

After a brief pause, the policewoman hesitated before answering. "If you’re talking about his personality... well, he’s not one to take on much responsibility, but when push comes to shove, he’s pretty reliable."

"That’s not what I mean," Leon interrupted, shaking his head.

"I’m talking about something more unusual—like physical abilities far beyond normal humans, or completing tasks no ordinary person could pull off."

She thought for a moment, then shook her head again. "Not really anything out of the ordinary... If anything, he’s an exceptional fighter, almost as good as me. His marksmanship is solid too, and he’s brilliant at making arrests..."

No, that wasn’t it.

Leon frowned inwardly. Those traits sounded like they belonged squarely within the realm of “ordinary” human capability—not supernatural. Whatever power that scarred brute possessed, it certainly wasn’t just being a sharpshooter or a skilled brawler.

Come to think of it, though, the Cleansing Bureau wasn’t far from the police department—it shared a few buildings with the Secret Investigation Bureau. If her chief had ever used any kind of abnormal ability nearby, even if his chief’s senses weren’t particularly sharp, surely she would’ve caught wind of it by now.

Watching Leon’s furrowed brow, clearly deep in thought, the policewoman couldn’t resist asking, “What exactly did you say to her inside? Why are you suddenly asking about our chief?”

Leon hesitated briefly before deciding to come clean. “Because your chief is a traitor.”

“…”

“A traitor might not be the right word. He probably wasn’t loyal to the bureau in the first place—he’s likely a spy who infiltrated your ranks.”

“…”

“Petty,” she muttered under her breath, crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes at him. Recalling how he’d insisted on interrogating the prisoner alone—and refused to let anyone listen in—she wrinkled her nose. “Fine, if you don’t want to tell me, you don’t have to. But why bother feeding me lines like that?”

“I’m not joking around,” Leon said firmly. “Your chief really is a spy.”

“Uh-huh.”

Seeing Leon still playing coy, the policewoman rolled her eyes and gave an exaggerated gasp. “Oh wow, a spy! Well, since you’re all done here, shouldn’t we go find this ‘spy’ and return the warrant? Time’s ticking…” Her voice trailed off sarcastically, but then she stopped mid-sentence, noticing the serious look on Leon’s face as he grabbed her arm.

“You... do you mean Chief is actually…” Her voice faltered, shock washing over her features.

“Yes.”

Leon nodded solemnly, pulling her along as they hurried toward the registration desk. Once there, he showed her the name written on the logbook and explained what he could—though omitting certain details, like the existence of anomalies, made his explanation sound flimsy at best.

But the policewoman had seen Leon’s “performances” before. She knew firsthand that his interrogation skills bordered on monstrous. After wrestling with doubt for several moments, she reluctantly accepted his story, muttering under her breath, “No wonder… No wonder those rebels always seemed to slip through our fingers these past two years, evading every trap we set. Only Chief managed to catch glimpses of them… So all this time…”

All this time, you were just pawns in their game.

Though Leon mentally finished her sentence for her, he kept his focus on giving instructions. “Keep this between us for now. Don’t act rashly. Your chief has some… peculiar qualities that make him tricky to handle. It’s safer if I call in reinforcements from the Cleansing Bureau. Wait here while I—”

He paused mid-sentence, seeing the dazed expression on her face. Worried she might do something reckless in her stunned state, he quickly amended, “Actually, never mind. You should come with me.”

“All right…”

For years, she’d been part of the secret police force, tirelessly hunting down rebel factions wreaking havoc across the city. And now, to discover that her trusted chief was one of them? The revelation hit her hard, leaving her mind reeling. In a daze, she allowed Leon to guide her forward.

But when the two stepped into the stairwell, climbed several flights of stairs, and pushed open the door expecting to find themselves back in the main hall of the Secret Investigation Bureau, they froze in place.

Instead of the bright, spacious lobby, they found themselves staring down a dim, narrow corridor. Just a short distance away, the registration table sat undisturbed—and Leon spotted the signatures they’d left only moments ago.

“…”

Well, no need to guess anymore. The scarred chief’s ability must involve this looping dungeon.

“How… How is this possible?” While Leon tried to piece together how he’d tipped his hand, the policewoman, witnessing the anomaly for the first time, stood utterly dumbfounded. “What’s going on?! Why are there so many identical dungeons?!”

“It’s not multiple dungeons,” Leon corrected, pointing to the folded corner of the registration form. “It’s the same dungeon repeating infinitely. See? I folded the bottom-right corner earlier, and the crease is still there. We’re stuck in the same place.”

With that, Leon picked up the registration sheet and led her back into the stairwell. When they descended another level and returned to find the table missing its logbook, he sighed regretfully.

“It’s confirmed. This isn’t a replication effect—it’s a loop. The top and bottom levels of the dungeon are connected. Your chief has trapped us.”

Connected…?

The policewoman’s eyes widened in awe. “So… this is what makes him special? This is his power?”

“That’s right.”

Without further explanation, Leon walked the length of the dungeon, checking the interrogation room once more. Finding the female prisoner gone and realizing they were alone, he blinked thoughtfully.

“Hold my hand and move closer to the wall.”

Pulling her aside, Leon gripped the Sacred Spirit Pendant hanging around his neck, took a deep breath, and summoned an invisible force before slamming an ethereal fist against the dungeon wall.

BOOM!

Chunks of brick and dust exploded outward, creating a gaping hole in the wall. Peering cautiously through the breach, Leon didn’t see another replica of the dungeon—but instead, a deep pit filled with dirt. For the first time since entering, his tense expression softened slightly.

“I thought it’d be something impressive… Guess I was wrong.”
