Chapter 150: Someone Come Protect Me!

After Gu Lang awkwardly shifted from the passenger seat into the driver's seat, Wang Ping hurriedly jumped onto the seat to check his tablet. He had deliberately brought the one he used at home to keep it separate from the one Gu Lang used for livestreaming. After all, they'd been together long enough that Gu Lang wouldn’t casually snoop through Wang Ping’s browsing history. But if the clumsy oaf broke this tablet by sitting on it, checking maps later would become a real hassle.

However, the tablet was nowhere to be found on the seat. When Gu Lang had opened the car door earlier, the gust of wind must have blown it onto the floor mat in front of the seat. Thankfully, the screen faced downward, avoiding any damage from being stepped on—but now there was an ugly muddy footprint smudged across the back.

Wang Ping sighed, using the fur on the back of his paw to gently wipe away the dirt before quickly stashing the tablet back into the dashboard drawer.

"Huh? When did you bring this one along too? I didn't even notice," Gu Lang said curiously after catching his breath.

"None of your damn business! You brought so much random junk, and I don’t complain about not knowing what half of it is!" Wang Ping shot him a disdainful look, then turned toward the window. In the reflection on the glass, he caught sight of Gu Lang sticking out his tongue behind him, looking utterly ridiculous.

Not far from the Jeep, the tent Gu Lang had left open when he exited was now fully inflated by the wind, billowing like a balloon. If not for the steel cables anchoring its corners, it would have flown off who-knows-where.

As the temperature continued to drop, Gu Lang shivered and started up the Jeep, cranking up the heater. He peeled off his rain-soaked clothes and wrapped himself in a thin blanket from the backseat, reclining as he adjusted the seat lower. Before long, condensation fogged up the windshield and windows, obscuring the view outside.

"Night night…" Gu Lang mumbled groggily, already dozing off.

The storm had come fiercely but passed quickly. Wang Ping vaguely remembered waking up in the middle of the night to relieve himself and finding the world eerily quiet, with a massive moon hanging low in the sky.

Wang Ping didn’t sleep well. His rest was fitful, hovering between dreams and wakefulness. Perhaps it was due to Gu Lang’s thunderous snoring—a sound so loud it felt like sleeping in a minefield, constantly exploding around him. By morning, Wang Ping’s little honey badger head was buzzing.

This wasn’t just because of the snoring; perhaps it also stemmed from oversleeping. Back in Shengjiawu, Wang Ping was accustomed to waking naturally. Here, however, at six in the morning, the outside remained pitch black, showing no signs of dawn. After drifting back to sleep, he woke again to find sunlight streaming onto his face.

Yawning widely, Wang Ping sluggishly climbed up, grabbing Gu Lang’s wrist to check the time—already past eight o’clock. He tossed the arm back without ceremony, ignoring Gu Lang’s sleepy grumbles as he rolled over, clearly having no intention of getting up anytime soon.

Unbothered, Wang Ping stretched and yawned again. Jumping into the backseat, he rummaged through Gu Lang’s backpack, pulling out a travel-sized toiletry kit. Inside were standard items, plus a small child’s toothbrush. Without checking outside, Wang Ping hopped straight out of the car.

The morning sun bathed the landscape in golden light, though the air was still chilly, barely above freezing. A brisk breeze hit Wang Ping, making him shiver—and instantly more alert. Just as he prepared to head toward the lake to freshen up, something seemed… off.

“Baa~”

The chaotic sound of hooves and bleating filled the air. Surrounding the vehicle were herds of antelope, their sleek forms moving gracefully under the early sunlight. Young lambs frolicked playfully around the adults, while the larger herd stretched all the way to the lakeshore, where countless animals gathered to drink.

Though Wang Ping might not recognize other species, these creatures were unmistakable: black faces, black hooves, and distinctive curved horns—the iconic Tibetan antelope. These endangered, protected animals were once embroiled in relentless battles against poachers. Their conservation came at great cost to the people of the plateau.

Yet despite their revered status, Wang Ping found them less enchanting and more annoying right now. Likely sensing no threat from the diminutive honey badger, the antelopes showed no fear. In fact, several bold ones approached curiously.

Thump!

Suddenly, Wang Ping was shoved from behind, sending him sprawling face-first onto the ground. The toiletry kit flew out of his grasp.

“Who?! Are you trying to pick a fight?!”

Shaking his head, Wang Ping scrambled to his feet, ready to retaliate. Behind him stood a young Tibetan antelope, barely 40 centimeters tall, staring at him with wide, innocent eyes. Nearby, a large male with imposing black horns watched lazily.

“Uh…” Wang Ping’s raised paw softened mid-air. Instead of swatting, he patted the youngster’s cheek and gave the adult a sheepish grin. “Your kid’s quite the troublemaker, huh?”

“Baa~” The lamb responded first, baring tiny teeth in mock aggression. It ducked under Wang Ping’s paw and charged again, knocking him flat on his rear.

“Tch… Only because you’re a protected species am I holding back, got it?” Wang Ping muttered, rubbing his sore bottom as he brushed dirt off his shirt.

The damp earth clung stubbornly to his fur. As he fussed over his muddy T-shirt, he noticed the mischievous lamb preparing another charge. Instinctively, Wang Ping pressed a paw against its head to hold it back—but underestimated the boundless curiosity of youth. Or rather, the universal trait of unruly kids, regardless of species.

Seeing Wang Ping’s compliance, the lamb grew bolder, charging repeatedly while bleating loudly. More youngsters joined in, forming a circle around the commotion. Meanwhile, the older antelopes maintained a dignified distance, watching the spectacle unfold with detached amusement.

“This brat belongs to someone, doesn’t it? If no one steps in, I’m seriously going to teach it a lesson!” Wang Ping growled indignantly.

Another lamb couldn’t resist joining the fun, trotting forward to knock Wang Ping down yet again.

“Smack!”

Flat on his back once more, Wang Ping snapped. Rising angrily, he prepared to retaliate—but froze upon realizing how many juvenile antelopes had surrounded him. Each stood about 30 to 40 centimeters tall, every single one a rowdy teenager eager to join the fray.

“What do you want from me?!” Wang Ping’s voice wavered nervously.

“So, you think I’m some kind of toy, huh?”

One lamb charged first, followed swiftly by others. Wang Ping dodged one, evaded another—but inevitably got bowled over. Each time he scrambled to his feet, another shove sent him tumbling back down. Within moments, his fur was caked with mud, transforming him into what looked like a scrappy monkey being tossed around by playful lambs.

“Damn…”

“I’m fighting back, alright?!”

“Ow…”

“For fuck’s sake… Gu Lang! Gu Lang! Get out here and protect me! …(╬ ̄皿 ̄) ノ”
