Chapter 149: A Change in the Weather
If Wang Ping had wanted to, he could have easily used his tablet to check the coordinates of his teammates. Every member of the security team carried a monitoring bracelet on missions. These bracelets not only tracked vital signs but also served as GPS locators, ensuring quick rescue in case of emergencies. Of course, accessing this data required proper authorization—and while Wang Ping had it, he hesitated.
The system was designed with strict safeguards. Anytime someone logged into the backend monitoring system, vibrations would alert the wearers. If anyone became suspicious and checked logs back at headquarters, Wang Ping’s cover might remain intact, but his original identity? Not so much. He couldn’t risk being accused of leaking sensitive information to poachers after everything else that had gone wrong.
"Forget it," Wang Ping muttered under his breath. "My main target is the poachers anyway. As for my teammates… if I run into them, great; if not, no big deal."
With that thought, the honey badger sat upright, grabbed the stylus, and closed the map app. Out of habit, his paw hovered over an icon for a mobile game before something made him pause. Suddenly remembering the duck he’d caught earlier that afternoon, he opened a search engine instead.
Using handwritten input, he scribbled out, “Ducks with black spots on their heads.” The screen flooded with results—everything from "domestic ducks" to "wild ducks." After a moment's consideration, he added “Tso Ngön Lake” to narrow the search. This time, the first result was an encyclopedia entry about Tso Ngön Lake. Scrolling down, his sharp eyes landed on a familiar image almost immediately.
“So that’s what they’re called—bar-headed geese,” Wang Ping murmured, clicking through more details. But as he read further, a pang of frustration hit him like a toothache.
The text clearly stated that bar-headed geese weren’t rare or protected. In fact, they were widely distributed and even farmed for their tender meat, making them a popular dish in hotels across the region.
“Grrr! Grrrr!” His stomach growled loudly, as though scolding him—not just for failing to secure dinner, but perhaps for letting the goose slip away too.
Lost in thought, Wang Ping stroked the fur on his chin. Then it occurred to him: earlier that day, he’d noticed an island in the middle of the lake. Thanks to the wonders of online encyclopedias, he now knew exactly where these birds liked to nest—and that yes, they were edible.
Setting the tablet aside, Wang Ping glanced toward the backseat of the vehicle.
“Which box did Gu Lang stash the drone in?”
Swimming wasn’t out of the question for Wang Ping—he was perfectly capable—but Tso Ngön Lake was vast. The distance between the shore and the island was daunting, to say the least. That’s when technology truly shone. With the drone, he could reach the island within half an hour and feast undisturbed.
It helped that Gu Lang had ended his livestream by now. Even if Wang Ping raided the nests, there’d be no one around to catch him. Still, he debated grabbing some matches and seasoning. Could he pull off a midnight barbecue right there on the island?
Then again, eating alone felt selfish. Bringing the goose back to camp risked waking up Gu Lang. Plus, the bird was hefty, and the drone might not handle the weight.
Just as Wang Ping rummaged through a small case containing the drone, ready to set his plan in motion, a loud pop! echoed outside. Startled, he turned to see the inflatable lounge chair Gu Lang had been using earlier spiraling upward into the dark sky, carried off by the wind. All that remained were loose ropes flapping against the side of the car.
Almost instantly, raindrops began pelting the windows.
“Seriously?” Wang Ping groaned, hopping onto the passenger seat to peer outside.
The wind had picked up dramatically. The tent Gu Lang had carefully positioned in a sheltered hollow was now swaying violently. The night sky was pitch-black, stars obscured by thick clouds, while rain lashed against the windshield with relentless force.
At this point, flying anything—let alone a drone—was out of the question. Helicopters wouldn’t dare take off in such conditions.
“Grrr!!” His belly rumbled again, as if mocking him. “You’ve got some nerve complaining!” Wang Ping snapped at himself, slapping his furry stomach. “All this food ends up in your gut anyway. Why don’t you go catch it yourself if you’re so hungry?”
Klang! A shadow fell from the roof, landing with a crash on the gravel beside the car. It startled Wang Ping badly. Peering out, he realized it was the light stand Gu Lang had placed atop the vehicle earlier. Its bulbs shattered, the long frame rolled along the ground, wires dragging the battery pack behind it.
“Well, isn’t that just perfect,” Wang Ping muttered, suppressing a laugh. The inflatable chair was one thing—it was cheap plastic—but the light stand? Hauled all the way from Hangzhou, thousands of kilometers away, only to break after a single use. Imagining Gu Lang’s dumbfounded expression tomorrow morning brought a smirk to Wang Ping’s face.
As for going outside to salvage anything? No chance. Besides, the light stand was beyond repair, and Wang Ping weighed less than the contraption itself. If he ventured out, he’d likely end up blown away before accomplishing anything.
The Jeep swayed slightly as the wind shifted direction, transforming the once-sheltered hollow into a wind tunnel. Pebbles and sand whipped against the car.
“Thank goodness there’s nothing dangerous nearby,” Wang Ping mused aloud. “If a branch flew into the car, things would get messy…”
His words trailed off as he spotted the rolling light stand collide with a rock, sending it airborne. It hurtled straight toward Gu Lang’s tent.
“Oh crap!” Wang Ping exclaimed. “Is it too late to warn him?”
The stand slammed into the tent, bouncing off the metal frame and landing sideways at the entrance. Muffled shouts came from inside, drowned out by the howling wind. The zipper slid open, and Gu Lang emerged, disoriented and squinting against the stinging rain.
“#$%#%...” Whatever he shouted was lost to the storm, even to his own ears.
Wang Ping leapt onto the dashboard and honked the horn. The sound carried over the wind, catching Gu Lang’s attention. Battling the gale, he scrambled toward the Jeep, using both arms and legs.
Whoosh! The passenger door swung wide open, forming a near-perfect right angle with the car. Cold rain and biting wind rushed in as Gu Lang stumbled inside, soaked to the bone. He turned back to wrestle the stubborn door shut, straining against the wind until it finally clicked closed with a resounding bang. Silence enveloped the interior.
Gu Lang collapsed onto the seat, gasping for air, his face pale and bewildered.
“Holy crap!” Wang Ping exclaimed, jumping down from the dashboard. He extended a tiny paw to tug at Gu Lang’s sleeve.
“Gu Lang, you idiot—you’re sitting on my tablet!”
