Chapter 146: You Dare Steal My Fish?
Gu Lang swore to himself that if his phone hadn’t been charging in the car, he would never have made such an amateur mistake.
Think about it—after being in Tibet for a whole week, how could he not realize there was a time difference? Fortunately, he’d resisted showing off his knowledge of calculating time based on the sun’s position in front of the camera earlier. If he had, there’d be no way to explain himself now.
Of course, if he really wanted to save face, reasons could always be found. Technically speaking, what Gu Lang did wasn’t entirely wrong. Setting aside geographical factors and focusing solely on time zones, his correction had been accurate. Even Wang Ping wouldn’t mock him for this. After all, when surviving in the wild, it didn’t matter whether you followed China Standard Time or some other standard—as long as you were familiar with it and could accurately track sunrise and sunset times, that was what counted.
It was like adjusting your schedule after traveling abroad. There was no point sticking rigidly to your original timezone once you’d entered a new one. Still, after retreating to the car and Googling to confirm the two-hour time difference between Tibet and China Standard Time, Gu Lang felt utterly speechless. No wonder today time seemed to pass unusually fast—he’d thought it was because he’d woken up late.
Now that they’d secured a campsite and set up the tent, just as he prepared to light a campfire for dinner, reality hit: the sun wouldn’t set for another two hours.
So…how exactly was he supposed to fill those two awkward hours?
Others might find their own ways to pass the time, but Wang Ping decided to spend them fishing.
Crouching by the water-filled pit he’d dug, Wang Ping tore strips of beef jerky into pieces with his teeth and tossed them into the water. At first, he threw them in continuously, using most of the jerky block. But after a while, the process turned into tossing one piece in, then eating another. Soon enough, viewers watching the livestream saw little more than a honey badgermunching away, occasionally remembering to toss a strip into the water.
The freshly dug pit allowed water to seep into the soil, but since it remained connected to the lake, any drop in water level caused the lake to refill it. The inflow rate from the lake far exceeded the seepage speed, so while the surface appeared calm, water was constantly flowing inward.
This makeshift method of catching fish relied heavily on luck. It wasn’t a stream where you could block the flow entirely, and Wang Ping certainly wasn’t about to strip down and dive into the water in front of the camera. Whether or not there’d be fish for dinner depended entirely on fate.
Of the two small bags of beef jerky Gu Lang delivered, half went into the water, while the rest disappeared into Wang Ping’s belly.
After wiping his greasy paws, Wang Ping stood up and stretched lazily, contemplating what to do next. That’s when he noticed a line of gray-feathered ducks with black spots floating across the nearby lake.
“Tsk, these ducks are fat…” He paused, frowning. “Wait, what the hell? Why are there ducks here?”
Wang Ping stood frozen on the lakeshore, his mind struggling to catch up.
There must have been at least twenty ducks gliding serenely across the water. Occasionally, one would dive beneath the surface, only to reemerge moments later with a shimmering fish clutched in its beak, which it promptly swallowed.
“Show-offs…”
Wang Ping couldn’t help but feel envious, though he wasn’t sure whether it was their waterproof feathers or their impressive fishing skills that irked him more.
“Holy crap, wait a second!”
Suddenly, realization dawned on him. Here he was, patiently waiting for fish to be lured by the beef jerky, and yet these ducks were lined up right in front of him, snatching every fish before they even reached his trap!
“Damn it, no wonder I didn’t see any ducks earlier, and now here they all are,” Wang Ping muttered angrily, scanning the ground for stones to chase the intruders away.
In the livestream chatroom, viewers who’d also noticed the ducks erupted in confusion.
“What the heck? How are there ducks in this remote wilderness lake?”
“This doesn’t fit the wildness scene at all—are there villages nearby?”
“You country bumpkins need to look up ‘wild ducks.’”
“For God’s sake, stop calling them ducks already!”
“Look closer—it’s obvious they’re ducks! Duck heads, duck bills, duck wings!”
“Shut up! My mouth is watering.”
“Thanks to Baidu, Sogou, and Wikipedia! These are bar-headed geese, you idiots!”
“Bar-headed geese? Like actual geese?”
“Haha, I checked—they belong to the Anatidae family…so technically, yeah, still ducks!”
“Pfft…you owe me my spilled soda!”
Amidst the chaos, someone pointed out, “Hey, hey, what’s the boss doing?”
On screen, Wang Ping picked up a fist-sized rock and brandished it menacingly at the flock.
“Uh…quick question: Are bar-headed geese protected animals?”
“Yeah, someone check fast!”
“Well…apparently they taste good…”
“Oh come on, ‘taste good’ isn’t helpful right now!”
With a splash, Wang Pink hurled the stone toward the ducks, landing it just ahead of the group. Water sprayed everywhere as a few alarmed ducks flapped their wings and squawked, taking flight briefly before settling farther out on the lake.
“Holy crap, these ducks can fly?” Wang Ping stared wide-eyed before comprehension struck. Of course there weren’t ordinary ducks in this desolate place—they were likely some special bird species.
Though not an ornithologist, Wang Ping had enough experience in related fields to draw connections. He knew many legendary birds sounded exotic but often looked plain—or downright ugly—to the point humans struggled to believe they were rare creatures.
Like these so-called ducks.
Frustration bubbled within him. Clearly, these birds hadn’t encountered predators in ages; they acted clueless. While Wang Ping’s thrown rock scared off a few, others continued drifting nonchalantly, some even moving closer.
“Hmm…why are they getting nearer?” Wang Ping scratched his head, observing intently. Then it hit him—the closer the ducks got to his side of the lake, the higher their chances of catching fish.
“So, you bastards really are stealing my fish!”
Whether driven by hunger or irritation, Wang Ping felt a surge of aggression. Meanwhile, the oblivious ducks kept chasing fish closer and closer to his shore.
Through the livestream, everyone watched breathlessly as Wang Ping crept silently along the gravel shoreline, inching toward the lake.
Finally, a bar-headed goose pursuing a fish swam toward the excavated pit near the bank. Just as it surfaced with its prize, a dark blur shot out from the shore, grabbing the goose by its long neck and dragging it onto land.
Viewers saw it clearly: Wang Ping had hooked one foot securely on the edge of the lake, leaning his entire body outward in a graceful arc, snatching the unsuspecting goose mid-surface.
“Quack? óдò”
The goose flailed wildly, wings beating in an attempt to escape. But the grip on its neck was unyielding, sending feathers flying without budging an inch.
Not only that, but the small fish it had caught was brutally snatched away.
