Chapter 147: The Duck in Hand… Flew Away

"Damn it all! You’re stealing my fish, huh? And you can fly too, huh?"

Wang Ping clutched the bar-headed goose by its neck with one paw, while the other held a palm-sized fish. With an air of indignation, he stomped back toward the shore, occasionally smacking the goose’s head with the fish.

"Quack! Quack! …Σ⊙▃⊙川"

The flock erupted into chaos, only now realizing there was a troublemaker on the lakeshore. A flurry of wings flapped as several larger geese—likely the leaders—charged over, beaks open and squawking. Their gray-white wings spread wide against the shimmering lake, creating quite the picturesque scene.

Of course, to Wang Ping, this was nothing but provocation.

"So you think you’ve got numbers on your side and want to fight, huh?"

With the fish in one hand and the now half-unconscious goose in the other, Wang Ping turned around and bared his teeth at the agitated flock.

"Wow! Here we go, start recording!"

"Let’s go, let’s go!"

"Oh my gosh, rare action scene!"

"Popcorn, beer, snacks incoming~~~"

"Warning: high-energy moment ahead!"

In the livestream chatroom, the audience egged him on enthusiastically. A few scattered comments urged calm, reminding everyone that bar-headed geese might be protected animals. But once someone chimed in with the "fact" that they weren’t protected—and were apparently delicious—even those voices joined the cheering mob.

However, the grand showdown everyone anticipated never materialized.

Just as Wang Ping tightened his grip on the goose, preparing to strike, Gu Lang appeared carrying a portable pot.

Bar-headed geese may not fear honey badgers, who are roughly their size, but humans were another story. Even from 200 meters away, the mere sight of a human figure sent them scattering into the sky.

Watching the previously fierce flock suddenly take flight, Wang Ping turned to see Gu Lang standing there, mouth agape, clutching the pot in confusion.

"Where did all these ducks come from? And they can fly?" Gu Lang blinked dumbfoundedly for a moment before finally approaching the shore. Spotting the lone goose still in Wang Ping's grasp, his face lit up with delight. "Wow, Boss, you caught one? Awesome! Looks like dinner just got upgraded!"

"Umm…"

Wang Ping instinctively glanced at the barely-struggling goose in his hand, hesitating.

Now that the flock had retreated, he began to cool down. If he could confirm that these were indeed bar-headed geese—not listed under any red conservation lists—he might have felt justified twisting the bird’s neck and letting Gu Lang stew up a pot of duck soup.

But here was the problem: he didn’t recognize the species. His professional ethics kicked in—if he couldn’t be certain the animal wasn’t protected, it was best to release it.

Unlike Gu Lang, who’d been subtly nudged into live-streaming on the plateau, Wang Ping had come with his own agenda. Reuniting with teammates was part of it, but the primary reason was the updated mission briefing posted on the internal website.

Wang Ping was here for the poachers planning to capture the Golden Eagle King—a mission born out of clarity he gained after returning from the Greater Khingan Range during those leisurely days at Shengjiawu.

He realized something profound: just because he was “out,” it didn’t mean his career had ended. Even alongside Gu Lang’s livestreams, he remained capable of combating poaching—evidenced by his successes in Tanzania and the Greater Khingan Range.

So despite appearances, Wang Ping still considered himself an unofficial member of WAP. From the day he joined Team Three, no one sought fame or power; their work stemmed from a shared spirit—or perhaps faith.

But if he ate a potentially endangered duck before even reaching his destination, wouldn’t that be ironic? Wouldn’t it slap him right in the face?

"Gurgle! Gurgle-gurgle!"

Perhaps sensing Wang Ping’s wavering resolve, his stomach protested loudly, ignoring the partially digested beef jerky and demanding attention.

"Huh? Are you hungry?" Gu Lang heard the rumbling noises emanating from Wang Ping’s belly and chuckled, squatting down to take the goose. "Here, give it to me. I’ll boil water and pluck the feathers."

"Quack! Quack!"

As Gu Lang spoke, a solitary bar-headed goose lingered near the shore, calling out to Wang Ping. While the rest of the flock had fled, this one remained behind, too afraid to approach yet unwilling to leave.

The livestream comments shifted from dreams of gourmet meals to romantic tragedy. Especially the young women migrating from the pet channels, many soft-hearted viewers couldn’t bear the sight.

"Legend has it they mate for life. If one dies, the other lives alone forever."

"Aww, poor thing fell into the Boss’s hands. So tragic."

"Hey! Snap out of it! That’s swans you’re thinking of! Bar-headed geese aren’t monogamous—I bet the one staying behind is worried about its eggs being left unattended."

"Tsk! How cold-hearted are you?"

"What? Have you never eaten duck before?"

"Sigh… What is love anyway?"

"For crying out loud, snap out of it!"

Back in Arshan, Yan Lili teared up, her lips trembling as she typed a comment on her tablet: "Bad Ping Ping, let it go! Let its lover reunite with it!"

While the livestream audience noticed her plea, Gu Lang certainly didn’t miss it either. However, his brain operated on a different wavelength than most. Glancing at the lake, he looked down at Wang Ping and said, "Oh, looks like the spouse is pleading for reunion…"

"So?" Wang Ping had already decided to release the goose but now found himself intrigued by Gu Lang’s potential justification.

"Separating couples isn’t nice…" Gu Lang placed the pot on the ground and pointed toward the lake, speaking earnestly. "Boss, why don’t you go catch that one too? Then we’ll have a full pot. This way, our meal improves, and we keep the couple together. Win-win!"

"Gu Lang! You heartless bastard!" The chat exploded. Offending a horde of sentimental young ladies was definitely not his smartest move.

"...Actually, that makes sense!" Wang Ping nodded seriously, pretending to hand over the goose amidst gasps and groans from the online crowd. It seemed as though Gu Lang had truly convinced him to chase after the other goose.

Gu Lang hastily reached out to take it—but just as his hand approached, Wang Ping’s grip suddenly loosened.

The seemingly lifeless bar-headed goose sprang to life, flapping its wings wildly.

"Holy crap!"

Gu Lang shot up, waving his arms desperately to grab it. But without Wang Ping’s agility and speed, all he managed to do was send a flurry of feathers spiraling through the air as the goose soared higher, circled, and flew back toward the lake.

"Ahh!" Gu Lang stomped his foot, glaring accusingly at Wang Ping. "You didn’t have to let go so soon! Now look, the duck in hand… flew away…"

Meeting Wang Ping’s amused little face, Gu Lang’s frustration froze mid-expression. His voice trailed off weakly as he muttered, "Y-you don’t actually think I let it go, do you?"
