Chapter 158: The Encounter at Hight Mountains (Part 1)

The Hight Mountains, shaped like a horseshoe, resembled a maiden veiled in gossamer. Her curves were enchanting, her face beguiling, and the dew-kissed peaks sparkled like diamonds on her navel.

By dawn, the northern peaks of the range were often shrouded in mist carried inland by the sea breeze, forming a thick fog that rolled across the landscape. Viewed from the mountain’s natural gap, the morning mist swirled like clouds dancing in the sky.

But Grant had no interest in admiring the scenery. Standing atop a rocky outcrop, he faced southeast, occasionally lifting the high-powered binoculars slung around his neck to scan the distant horizon.

“Boss, any sign of the enemy?” Walton leaned forward, asking cautiously.

“Not yet,” Grant replied with a frown before turning to glance at him. “What about Colonel Flavius? Has he managed to contact Talosal?”

Walton shook his head. “The communications jamming equipment at Brave Bastion has blanketed the entire Apalus Military-Industrial Base. Unless Talosal uses his mysterious abilities to reach out, we won’t be able to establish contact with our current gear.”

“Sigh…” Grant exhaled deeply. According to their scouts, the vanguard of the Third Army Corps had already crossed the Moslia Valley and would soon reach the southern foothills of the Hight Mountains. If they were allowed to pass unhindered into the heart of the northwest region, even if Tang Fang’s group managed to break free from Brave Bastion’s defenses, they’d inevitably encounter this advance force. Once slowed down, they risked being trapped by the main army behind them—a force numbering tens of thousands of armored vehicles. With only a few hundred fighters on their side, how could they possibly win?

“I’ll stake my life to hold back the vanguard of the Third Army Corps,” Grant muttered darkly, unusually cursing under his breath. “If those bastards want to harm Talosal, they’ll have to step over my dead body first.”

Walton glanced toward the rising sun and said quietly, “And mine too.”

---

According to the original plan, after Tang Fang and his team infiltrated Brave Bastion, rebel leaders scattered throughout the cities and towns of the northwest would incite uprisings among the oppressed populace. Some would conduct guerrilla warfare along the edges of the Termont Mountains, keeping the 606th Division tied up, while others attacked military supply depots. After securing supplies, they would feign an advance toward Miluo Plateau, coordinating with the garrison forces at Droznyr Naval Port to pressure Rheinstadt, forcing Aldrich—the wily old fox—to withdraw troops.

On one hand, Tang Fang’s group would wreak havoc on Krotan’s industrial base within Brave Bastion; on the other, rebel forces would surround the area. The Fourth Army Corps in the southwest couldn’t move, nor could the Second Army Corps in the central regions. The governor’s only option to prevent losing the northwest entirely was to recall his forces.

With Tang Fang’s capabilities, it should’ve been easy for him to learn of the government forces’ movements. Once the main force of the Third Army Corps began retreating, Tang Fang would lead his people in a breakout, linking up with Colonel Flavius’s extraction team. They would retreat through the Hight Mountains to Droznyr Naval Port.

As for the rebels, they could disperse back into civilian life or leverage the advantageous terrain of the Termont, Hight, and Kulunsk Mountains to wage hit-and-run campaigns against the government forces indefinitely.

That was the plan—except things weren’t going as expected. Tang Fang remained unreachable, and the vanguard of the Third Army Corps was approaching the southern foothills of the Hight Mountains far sooner than anticipated.

Grant checked his watch: 7:35 AM.

“Let’s go find Colonel Flavius.” Without another word, he turned and headed toward a secluded ravine nearby.

About ten minutes later, they arrived at the rebel encampment. Flavius sat studying a map with several officers beneath the shade of trees. Hearing footsteps, they all looked up.

“Well?” Flavius asked. “Any news of Talosal?”

Grant shook his head, his gaze sweeping over everyone before settling on Flavius’s face. “Colonel, I have a request.”

“No need to say it.” Flavius waved dismissively. “I know what you’re thinking.”

The men gathered around Flavius chuckled. A captain whose stubble resembled steel needles spoke in a raspy voice: “We never abandon a comrade—that’s our vow. And he’s not just a comrade; he saved our lives. That debt is worth dying for a hundred times over.”

A burly shirtless man with chest hair covering half his torso slapped his muscular arm. “Brother, don’t pull this lone hero act. If something happens, we shoulder it together. Every single one of us here has as much guts as you do.”

Another man who seemed familiar with Grant grinned slyly. “Grant, are you trying to hog all the glory? I won’t let you. Blue Lake isn’t short of men. Want to be the boss? You’ll have to ask me first.”

“…”

“You…” Grant stared at them, stunned. Strategically speaking, their mission was already a success—the only unresolved piece was failing to rendezvous with Tang Fang.

He had long resolved not to return to the naval port without seeing Tang Fang. But what shocked him the most was that these men shared his resolve. No abandonment, no surrender—even if it cost them their lives.

“Grant, take a look at this.” Flavius, seasoned by countless battles, was calmer than the rest. He didn’t deliver stirring speeches or emotional declarations. Instead, his slightly clouded eyes gleamed with quiet determination.

Grant studied the PDA’s topographical map, dotted with red circles and annotated notes. “Colonel, so you’ve already made plans…”

“Heh, old age catches up with you,” Flavius chuckled. “My stamina and energy aren’t what they used to be—I can’t match you youngsters anymore. All I have left are these scraps of battle experience.”

---

While Flavius and his team executed their meticulously planned operation, Tang Fang and his two companions sped northeast in a Siege Tank toward the Hight Mountains. Using Changeling to infiltrate Brave Bastion’s command center, they launched a midnight assault, disabling the fortress’s perimeter defenses and breaking through the government lines.

“Tang Fang, can we stop for a breather? Two days straight of destruction is exhausting, even for someone as tough as you.”

“Don’t listen to Housen. I know exactly what you’re scheming. As soon as we stop, you’ll start flirting with your nurse friends again.”

“What… Arroz, shut your trap unless you want me to shut it for you!” Housen snapped, mortified at having his intentions exposed.

From behind, Tang Fang listened to their bickering and couldn’t help but shake his head, sighing softly. It wasn’t entirely Housen’s fault—the nurses were undeniably tempting. Their sultry voices paired with faces reminiscent of legendary seductresses were enough to test anyone’s self-control. In the end, Tang Fang simply banished them all to system space, restoring silence to the world.

After another thirty minutes of travel, the vehicle’s radar warning lights flashed. Red dots crowded the screen’s edge, and sound radar detected gunfire and artillery activity.

Northeastern foothills of the Hight Mountains? The three exchanged glances. Perhaps… something had gone wrong with Flavius’s extraction force.

Turning the tank northward, they reached a point twenty kilometers from the foothills twenty minutes later. Tang Fang opened the hatch and adjusted his visor to telescopic mode.

The scene at the horizon made him pause. On two gentler ridges of the southern Hight Mountains, gunfire erupted continuously, and explosions thundered. Saber-Tooth A2 armored personnel carriers lobbed grenades into the mountainside, sending plumes of sand flying. Over thirty helicopters rained rockets onto the densest areas of fire on both sides of the ridgeline.

Amidst the fiery haze and smoke, defenders on the ridges fought back fiercely. Infantry armed with cluster rocket launchers created aerial barrages, forcing the helicopters to weave erratically, struggling to maintain formation.

“So it really is Flavius’s extraction force clashing with the government troops,” Tang Fang murmured, furrowing his brow. Why were Grant and his people fighting the government forces? According to orbital satellite intel, the vanguard was heading straight for Brave Bastion—so why had they suddenly detoured to the southern foothills of the Hight Mountains?
