Chapter 157: The Pitiable Governor

While Arroz was teasing Housen, inside the command center of the city garrison forces:

As Gibbon Daler's furious face disappeared from the central screen, Lieutenant Colonel Luke slammed his fist onto the control panel. "Can anyone tell me how those soldiers and armored vehicles infiltrated our base?"

No one had an answer—or if they did, they dared not speak. Silence reigned, the safest course of action in that moment.

"Communications officer, connect me to the 606th Division headquarters." After a long pause, Luke sighed deeply and gave the order with a look of defeat.

Five minutes later, after speaking with Thomas Chandler, commander of the 606th Division, the lieutenant colonel slumped back onto the couch. His face turned as ashen as a plate of century eggs mixed with garlic paste.

Rebellion had erupted in several towns near Brave Bastion—Gocang City, Desibao City, Baneta City, Moerton City, Siva City, and others. Protesters stormed police stations, government offices, and military outposts, taking advantage of high-rise buildings and narrow alleys to wage desperate urban guerrilla warfare against three armored brigades (the 1st, 4th, and 5th) sent by the 606th Division to suppress them.

The unrest spread across key population centers surrounding Brave Bastion, with tens of thousands joining the rebellion, engulfing the entire northwest region. Aside from the 2nd and 3rd Armored Brigades stationed at Brave Bastion and the 6th Brigade guarding the Third Army Corps headquarters, the 606th Division could only muster about 6,000 troops. Faced with this wildfire-like uprising, Chandler’s forces were stretched thin, unable to contain the chaos. Hoping for reinforcements from him? That would be nothing short of a pipe dream.

Luke was dumbfounded, his mind spinning. How had things spiraled so far out of control? Why… why?

Aldrich had deployed five armored divisions of the Third Army Corps to the eastern front, assuming that the 606th Armored Division and Brave Bastion's supposedly impenetrable defenses would easily handle any crisis. But who could have foreseen that Brave Bastion, which even nuclear weapons couldn’t breach, would collapse from within? Meanwhile, the 606th Division was running itself ragged trying to put out fires everywhere.

The entire northwest felt like a volcano on the verge of eruption—and Luke Nelson happened to be sitting right on the smoking crater. When the magma finally surged forth, the flames would consume him entirely, leaving not even a bone behind.

"What now?" His gaze drifted through the window toward the southeast. "With rebellion spreading across the northwest, I imagine the governor won’t stay idle for much longer."

---

Five hours later, in Rheinstadt, the capital of Krotan.

The setting sun cast long shadows over the bustling streets. Wealthy women strolled through luxury malls, occasionally tossing items they fancied into the baskets carried by their robotic assistants.

Dinner time approached, and in the dining hall of Falkbys Palace, the esteemed Governor Aldrich sat meticulously cutting his steak into small pieces with a knife and fork.

At times, he popped tender morsels into his mouth, chewing slowly before swallowing. Other times, he pushed bits of meat onto the plate of “Avril,” watching it wag its head happily as it devoured the food.

Knock-knock-knock. A knock came at the door. Aldrich waved dismissively to the guard behind him.

The guard opened the door, allowing a staff officer from the military department to enter, head bowed low.

"What is it?" Aldrich elegantly folded his napkin and dabbed the corners of his mouth. He detested being disturbed during meals; if it were something trivial, he wouldn’t hesitate to make Howard regret interrupting.

"Governor, Brave Bastion has sent a distress signal." Howard cautiously slid a document in front of Aldrich, then produced another. "Commander Thomas Chandler of the 606th Division also requests reinforcements for the northwest region."

"Hmm?" Aldrich's silver-threaded eyebrows knitted together. He casually picked up the distress signal from Brave Bastion and skimmed it, his frown deepening with each line. His expression grew darker still.

Howard’s head dipped lower, too afraid to even steal a glance.

After finishing the message from Brave Bastion, Aldrich picked up Commander Chandler’s report. By the time he was done, a flush of anger crept across his youthful-looking face. Blood surged in his chest, and low growls escaped his nostrils.

Clenching the two distress signals tighter and tighter, Aldrich let out a thunderous "Worthless!" as his pent-up rage exploded.

He swept the steak and side dishes off the table, sending them crashing to the floor. The exquisite tablecloth was yanked aside. Poor Avril was flipped over with a pitiful screech, rolling under the long dining table where it hid, trembling.

"Dispatched by the governor's office? How was I not informed?" Aldrich hurled the crumpled papers at Howard’s face. "Two armored brigades and half a division of garrison forces defeated by fewer than a thousand men? What use are these incompetents to the empire?"

Howard hunched his shoulders and kept his head down, remaining silent throughout. Everyone knew the governor was no longer the scholarly bureaucrat who once prioritized politics over military affairs—he had transformed into a ruthless strategist commanding armies. With such a superior, saying more meant risking more mistakes. Silence was the only way to protect oneself.

Having vented his fury, Aldrich gradually calmed down. He waved his hand, dismissing Howard, and walked over to the liquor cabinet. Grabbing a bottle of whiskey, he poured himself a drink and settled into a chair.

The golden glow of the setting sun bathed the large floor to ceiling windows. Avril emerged from beneath the table, licking its paws and emitting a soft "meow."

---

When nearly the entire outer ring of the Apalus Military-Industrial Base was engulfed in flames, the governor finally relented. Learning from past failures, he dared not mobilize the Fourth Army Corps stationed in the southwest or the troops guarding Rheinstadt. Instead, he ordered five armored divisions of the Third Army Corps—the 106th, 206th, 306th, 406th, and 506th—that were en route to the middle reaches of the Sunaru River to turn back immediately and head northwest to quell the rebellion.

The eastern campaign had failed completely, leaving Aldrich feeling as though he’d been struck impotent at the most critical moment—an unbearable frustration.

Aldrich locked himself in the governor’s office with Avril for an entire day, neither eating nor drinking. It wasn’t until the following morning that he emerged, bloodshot eyes gleaming with renewed determination, ready to reclaim his role as a master strategist.

The five divisions of the Third Army Corps had already returned to Miluo Plateau and would reach the Hight Mountains within a day, entering the northwest region. Upon arrival, the 106th, 206th, and 306th Divisions would cooperate with the main force of the 606th Division to suppress the rebellion. Meanwhile, the 406th and 506th Divisions would march toward Brave Bastion to trap the enemy inside the fortress.

But the unexpected happened. Before the Third Army Corps’ main force could enter the northwest, Brave Bastion’s command system suddenly collapsed. Some officers mutinied, assassinating nearly 80% of the garrison’s senior leadership, paralyzing 70% of the fortress’s defensive structures. Seizing the opportunity, the mysterious forces inside the city broke through the gates, smashing through the remnants of the 2nd and 3rd Armored Brigades, and escaped unscathed.

When Colonel Howard delivered the intelligence to Aldrich, the pitiable governor flipped the table yet again. Swearing to God, he vowed never to see Howard’s cratered, wrinkled face ever again.
