Chapter 159: The Encounter at Hight Mountains (Part 2)

Tang Fang had initially planned to annihilate the vanguard entirely, delivering a devastating blow to the Third Army Corps. But Flavius’s extraction force had complicated matters.

His wrist-mounted communicator had been damaged in earlier fighting, leaving him unaware of how desperate Grant and his men had become. Left with no other choice, they had resorted to a "substitute sacrifice" tactic—luring the vanguard to the southern foothills of the Hight Mountains to stall them and buy time for Tang Fang’s escape.

If Tang Fang was aware of these details, he would’ve definitely felt speechless. After all, the battle at Apalus Military-Industrial Base had already netted him 10,685 crystal resources. If he could also wipe out this vanguard, it would be another massive haul. Even more tantalizing was a bolder thought simmering in his mind: what if he could take down all five armored divisions of the Third Army Corps? That would send his resource count skyrocketing to an unimaginable level.

But now, thanks to Flavius’s group, that plan was ruined. With only 500 troops facing nearly two brigades of the vanguard, even with the advantage of terrain, holding them off temporarily was possible—but sustaining it over time? Not likely.

Frowning as he weighed their options, Tang Fang glanced again at the battlefield. Under the cover of heavy firepower from their vehicles, some vanguard soldiers were scaling the ridges on both sides, rapidly closing in on Flavius’s flanks.

“Let’s move. We’ll save them,” Tang Fang said, addressing the two inside the tank.

“Are you going to stow this beast away?” Housen asked reluctantly. For someone who thrived on destruction, piloting such a powerful weapon was pure ecstasy.

Tang Fang hesitated briefly before shaking his head. “No need. Just make up an excuse later.”

“All right! Government lackeys, wash your backsides clean—Housen is coming!” With Tang Fang and Arroz out of the vehicle, Housen slammed the throttle, sending the Siege Tank barreling forward like a raging bull, scattering gravel everywhere as it charged toward the frontlines.

Meanwhile, Arroz led his team of Marines and Marauders in a flanking maneuver. Tang Fang, after careful consideration, signaled both Arroz and Housen to slow their advance. He then deployed four additional Siege Tanks and five Widow Mines.

The four tanks followed closely behind Housen while the Widow Mines scurried ahead under Tang Fang’s guidance, creeping toward the enemy’s vehicle cluster.

Small and low-profile, the Widow Mines moved stealthily across the ground, their shells coated with heat-shielding material. Even Krotan military radar systems—and the most advanced quantum light-based arrays—would struggle to detect them unless operating at maximum power.

As the distance closed, the vanguard remained oblivious to the grim reaper lurking just moments away, its blood-red scythe poised above their necks.

“Ryosuke Morimoto, keep your attack helicopters firing relentlessly. Let these rebel scum taste the full fury of our bombardment.”

“You cowardly bastard, Yao Wenshan! Are you still hesitating against a mere twelve-man squad? Pathetic!”

“Patrick, excellent work securing Point B. Their firepower will weaken significantly.”

“…”

Colonel Hercules Lewis’s voice echoed through the comms channel as relentless air and ground artillery pummeled Flavius’s forces, shrinking their operational space.

Boom! A rocket struck a nearby rock face, triggering a searing blast wave. Shrapnel rained down on Grant and Webbren’s powered armor suits, clattering loudly.

“Damn it, their fire is intensifying. In five minutes, they’ll flank us completely. If we don’t retreat soon, we’ll be boxed in like dumplings.”

Grant shook off the dust, glancing left and right. His expression darkened. Without heavy weapons or long-range support, there was no way to withstand the enemy’s carpet bombing.

“We should’ve brought an artillery unit,” Webbren grumbled regretfully.

“No use crying over spilled milk. Nobody expected Talosal to still not show up by now. All we can do is hold on for as long as possible.”

Boom! Another missile struck the ridge behind them, launching two rebels manning cluster rocket launchers into the air. One lost a leg, crashing onto the rocky ground in a spray of crimson.

“Kelly!” Webbren shouted desperately—it was one of his brothers from Blue Lake. Grant grabbed his arm firmly. “Webbren, don’t go. At this range, you’d be blown apart before you reached him.”

“Damn it!” Webbren slammed his fist into the gravel, grabbing a rocket launcher and loading their last rocket. He aimed it at a Saber-Tooth A2 reconnaissance vehicle near the pass.

But just as he locked onto the target and prepared to fire, two azure orbs descended from the sky, landing squarely on the vehicle’s cockpit. Superheated plasma splashed outward, melting everything within dozens of meters into twisted metal scrap.

Pop, pop, pop. Three more azure orbs rained down.

It was as though fiery rain had engulfed the vanguard’s vehicle formation. Plasma erupted in all directions, turning nearby vehicles into molten slag. Even those farther away weren’t spared; scattered plasma burned countless holes into their armor.

Boom, boom, boom! Secondary explosions tore through ammunition compartments.

Government soldiers tumbled from their vehicles, screaming as plasma rained down on their powered armor. Circles of red spread across their suits, melting through layer by layer until only charred remains were left. The acrid smell of roasted flesh mingled with their wails, hanging thick in the air.

“Oh my God… Grant… What… what is that?! Look!” Webbren dropped the RPG, frantically shaking Grant’s arm.

“Webbren, let go! I see it!” Grant pushed him aside. By now, the enemy’s suppressive fire had ceased, replaced by chaos in their ranks.

Massive plasma orbs flew from the horizon, slamming into the enemy formation. Most of the vanguard’s vehicles were lightly armored, making them as fragile as eggshells against the superheated plasma capable of liquefying even heavy armor.

“Fire! Blast their faces off! Ha-ha, serves you right, you government bastards!” A burly soldier with a chest full of black hair crawled up beside them.

Grant groaned internally. This guy reminded him of Taloso from Talosal’s crew.

“Wait… Talosal?” Something clicked in Grant’s mind. He glanced at the panicked vanguard soldiers evacuating the pass, his eyes gleaming. Who else besides rebel forces dared oppose Krotan’s army?

Yes, there was one answer: Talosal. It had to be Talosal.

Could this spectacle be another of that guy’s handiwork? The more Grant thought about it, the more certain he became. Who else could pull off something like this? The same person who sank an entire mixed naval fleet!

Grant wasn’t naive. He recognized the objects raining down among the enemy—they were plasma spheres, nearly 200mm in diameter. Such particle-based weaponry was typically reserved for cutting-edge aerospace warships. Where did this mysterious figure get his hands on them?

Not just Grant—all the rebel soldiers watched the chaotic scene unfolding below, baffled and awestruck.
