Chapter 150: The Factory

Minutes later, a soft "ding" echoed through the elevator as Tang Fang stepped out with his team. They turned left and approached a massive cylindrical computer encased in transparent glass. Before he could repeat his usual tactic of disabling the door’s security system, the voice of Adjutant—the robotic assistant from the Orbital Command Center—interrupted him.

"Commander, satellite data indicates that any deliberate or accidental damage to facilities connected to the 'Galaxy' Data Center will be flagged as an intrusion by the mainframe. Power will be cut, and the center will enter sleep mode."

"Huh? The 'Galaxy' Data Center? Here?"

"Yes, Commander. This spiral-shaped building is officially known as the Krotan 'Galaxy' Military Research and Development Hub."

"So how do we get inside?" Tang Fang furrowed his brow, glancing out at the smoky haze enveloping the outer industrial zone. The Hive had unleashed its full swarm of Locust Drones, blanketing the sky like a dark storm cloud.

"Commander, give me two minutes."

"What? You have a plan?"

"The Orbital Command Center can bypass the 'Galaxy's firewall, but it requires some processing time."

"Fine. Proceed immediately." For reasons unknown, there were no defensive drones stationed within the building. As for the ones outside, they wouldn’t stand a chance against the thirty Marines guarding their perimeter. Two minutes? Hell, even half an hour wouldn’t make a difference.

"Understood, Commander."

Two minutes passed in silence before Adjutant’s voice returned. "Highest-level access granted. User UNKNOWN injected. Security clearance: S. Commander, mission accomplished."

Tang Fang gave a slight nod and strode toward the entrance. He lowered his head, allowing the retinal scanner to sweep over his eyes.

"Click." The door slid open, accompanied by a feminine voice similar to the one in the lobby. "Dr. UNKNOWN, welcome to the data center."

"Dr. UNKNOWN?" Tang Fang couldn’t help but chuckle. Adjutant really was lazy—if she couldn’t come up with a fake name, why not something less obvious than “Unknown”? Dr. Unknown... it sounded like a punchline.

True to its reputation as Apalus’ most technologically advanced facility, the moment Tang Fang settled into the chair before the massive screen, the console lit up, projecting a holographic image of a woman.

"Dr. UNKNOWN, how may I assist you?"

"Display encrypted file index."

"Yes." At the VI’s (Virtual Intelligence) prompt, the central monitor blinked, revealing rows of classified document titles.

Tang Fang extended the data port on his powered armor and plugged it into the terminal. "Begin copying."

"Yes. Copy process initiated." A progress bar appeared, percentages rapidly climbing.

As the replication reached the vehicle category, Tang Fang wasn’t surprised when the familiar chime of Starcraft II’s system notification rang in his mind.

"Detected usable data. Initiating diagnostic program..."

"Diagnostics complete. Compatibility confirmed: Terran."

"Analyzing data..."

"Engineering Level C+. Research tree unlocked. Technology Level 2. Building unlocked: Factory."

The Factory. It was finally here. Despite bracing himself for this moment, excitement surged through him uncontrollably, and he laughed aloud. With the Factory online, he could produce Hellions, Widow Mines, Siege Tanks, and even the mighty Thor. Against these mechanized forces, Krotan’s armored divisions would crumble like scrap metal.

Suppressing his exhilaration, Tang Fang focused on the virtual Terran base interface. Selecting an SCV, he pressed the advanced construction hotkey. The menu flashed, highlighting the newly available Factory. Quickly tapping F, the structure materialized beside the Barracks within seconds. Barely containing his joy, he clicked on the Factory, only to let out an involuntary "Huh?" The tech lab attachment was grayed out, locked in place.

No lab meant no tanks. Was this some kind of joke?

Refusing to give up, he tried lifting the Barracks to relocate the Factory underneath, but it didn’t work. Apparently, the Factory’s tech lab add-on required additional unlocking.

"Fine. At least I’ve got Hellions and Widow Mines," he muttered, trying to quell his frustration. Just then, Adjutant chimed in again, nearly making him spit blood all over the monitor.

"Commander, analysis of encrypted data revealed experimental schematics for multiple combat vehicles. The Factory’s tech lab attachment has been unlocked."

"Adjutant, do you have a name?"

"You may call me Emma, Commander."

"Emma, I hope your entire family burns in—" Tang Fang growled, flipping her off for good measure.

"Thank you for your concern," Adjutant replied mechanically.

"...Ugh." Tang Fang fell silent, realizing arguing with a robot was a losing battle.

Shaking off his irritation, he selected the Factory once more. Sure enough, the tech lab icon in the lower-left corner of the menu was now active. Clicking X, the lab finished construction in moments.

"Heh, heh." Staring at the three production options now available, Tang Fang grinned ear to ear.

Hellions, Widow Mines, Siege Tanks—all unlocked except for the Thor, which required an Armory. Each unit brought unique strengths to the battlefield.

Hellions were swift assault vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive chassis, capable of blistering speeds far surpassing reconnaissance units. Armed with Infernal Flamethrowers, their pilots often joked about turning enemies into roasted pigs. Their high mobility combined with long-range flame attacks made them devastating ambush specialists. Upgrading the Hellion’s pre-igniter in the tech lab boosted flame temperature exponentially, shifting from yellow flames to blue thermite-enhanced infernos. Alternatively, Hellions could transform into Hellbats, sacrificing speed for enhanced defense—but such upgrades required access to the Armory building.

Even without blue flames, though, basic yellow fire was more than enough to melt Guardian Knight armor.

Widow Mines were intelligent drones capable of scuttling to key locations using four legs. Once triggered, they detonated via short-range VTOL thrusters, overloading built-in fusion reactors to unleash catastrophic explosions. Fusion-powered blasts offered area-of-effect devastation effective against both ground troops and air units. Equipped with cloaking technology, Widow Mines became invisible upon reaching designated spots. Imagine planting one in the heart of the enemy’s armored column—a spectacular sight indeed.

Finally, Siege Tanks provided heavy firepower. Unlike their predecessors in Starcraft I, these “Crucio” models featured twin 90mm plasma cannons in tank mode and upgraded to single 180mm plasma oscillators in siege mode. While boasting superior range and lethality, their splash damage posed risks to allies as well as foes. Thankfully, targeting assistance systems ensured precision strikes, minimizing friendly fire incidents if operators exercised caution.

Reviewing costs, Tang Fang noted Hellions cost 100 minerals and consumed 2 supplies; Widow Mines required 50 minerals, 25 gas, and also took 2 supplies; Siege Tanks demanded 150 minerals, 125 gas, and 2 supplies each.

"At least resource costs haven’t skyrocketed like Overlords did," he sighed in relief. Yet glancing at his dwindling resources—44,245 minerals and just 500 gas—he groaned. Four tanks would wipe out his remaining gas entirely. What a headache. Minerals were plentiful, but vespene gas remained painfully scarce.

Sighing deeply, Tang Fang pulled his attention away from the system. Glancing at the main screen, he saw the copy process had reached 100%. Unplugging the data cable, he stood ready to leave—only for Emma’s voice to stop him.

"Commander, further analysis of the encrypted files uncovered a suspicious detail."

"Suspicious?"

"One file pertains to the architectural layout of the Galaxy R&D Hub. It mentions 101 above-ground floors and 25 underground levels. However, the navigation computer in the lobby lists only 24 subterranean floors."

Could there be hidden elements deeper still? "Emma, can we verify this discrepancy?"

"Please wait while the system scans satellites and global networks for relevant data."

"Alright."

Ten minutes later, Emma spoke again. "Data retrieval complete. Assembling useful information… correcting parameters… constructing model… transmitting visuals."

A stream of data flowed into Tang Fang’s mind, rendering the facility’s internal structure crystal clear.

"The Prometheus Project? What does that mean?"
