Chapter 149: The Battle of Apalus (Part 6)

The rumble of explosions echoed behind Tang Fang as he pressed forward, his boots pounding steadily toward the helical tower—the heart of the industrial complex and its largest database. Somewhere within that gleaming spire lay the key to unlocking terran’s advanced technologies.

Checking his PDA, he noted they were halfway through their journey, now navigating the mid-ring area. With another twenty minutes or so, they would reach their destination. But just as he rounded a corner, a flash erupted from a nearby building. Before he could react, the whirring of gun barrels filled the air, followed by a hail of bullets tearing toward him.

Tang Fang skidded to a halt, flipping backward to evade the incoming fire. Yet before he could catch his breath, two rockets streaked toward him with deadly precision. In the nick of time, he exhaled sharply, raising his C-14 Impaler rifle. A surge of electricity coursed through the weapon, launching two electrified spikes straight at the projectiles.

"BOOM! BOOM!" The rockets exploded into bursts of fiery confetti. Only then did Tang Fang get a clear look at his attacker—a defensive robot resembling a scaled-down version of the Heavy Armor Warrior. It was likely an early prototype.

As Tang Fang frowned, assessing the machine, a series of metallic clicks sounded behind him. Eight spider-like mechanical creatures leapt down from a factory rooftop, scuttling rapidly toward the group.

"Hold them off," Tang Fang commanded the 62 Marines while he and the two Marauders focused fire on the larger robot.

The spider bots emitted shrill mechanical screeches as mini-rocket launchers emerged from their backs. "WHOOSH! WHOOSH!" Dozens of miniature rockets launched in unison, arcing toward the marines.

But the soldiers stood firm, rifles raised. Sixty-two silver beams shot out, intercepting and detonating the rockets mid-air while simultaneously shredding the spider bots into scrap metal. Meanwhile, Tang Fang and the Marauders reduced the prototype Heavy Armor Warrior to a smoldering heap of twisted metal.

With the robotic ambush neutralized, Tang Fang glanced back toward the outer ring. Hovering amidst the smoke-filled sky was a massive hive-shaped aircraft, nearly a hundred meters long. From its intricate honeycomb chambers, swarms of Locust Swarm drones buzzed forth, splitting into two groups and racing toward Arroz’s and Housen’s positions.

Tang Fang narrowed his eyes but didn’t pause. If the garrison thought these drones could stop two platoons of Terran soldiers, reality would soon deliver a harsh slap in the face. He turned and sprinted onward.

---

The closer they got to the helical tower, the denser the resistance became. Defensive robots and spider bots swarmed the area, unleashing torrents of gunfire and rockets that rained down like hellfire.

Tang Fang moved with relentless efficiency, his hands crackling with energy. Each electrified spike he fired disabled another enemy unit. The overclocked pulse energy derived from Epsilon technology was nothing short of extraordinary. Not only could it overload power armor and fry electronic components, but when infused into ammunition, it created EMP fields capable of disabling entire circuits without direct hits. Merely brushing against the half-meter-wide field overloaded processors, rendering the machines useless.

This new application of EMP effects bordered on terrifying—comparable even to Ghost’s infamous EMP grenades.

Under the combined effects of stimpacks and EMP-enhanced spikes, Tang Fang cut through the battlefield like a mechanical reaper, leaving behind trails of mangled steel corpses.

Perhaps sensing the devastation caused by Tang Fang’s advance, the largest cells atop the hovering hive opened, releasing four Hornet attack craft. These sleek fighters swooped downward, their underwing missile racks bristling with ordnance, and retractable stinger cannons protruding menacingly from their tails.

Glancing briefly at the looming helical tower, Tang Fang smirked. Without hesitation, he stowed the C-14 Impaler and retrieved a folded sniper rifle slung across his back—the God of the North Wind. Claire’s prized possession, a 20mm anti-material rifle, had taken considerable persuasion to borrow.

Despite the lingering scent of gunpowder, a faint floral aroma clung to the weapon. Taking a deep breath, Tang Fang steadied the heavy rifle against his shoulder, aligning the crosshairs with one of the descending Hornets.

BOOM! A custom high-explosive armor-piercing round erupted from the barrel, encased in crackling arcs of pulsed electromagnetic energy. The resulting EMP field expanded to nearly a meter in diameter.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Three more shots rang out, each bullet trailing electric tendrils.

A blinding flash lit up the sky as the first Hornet plummeted like a dead fly, crashing into a factory wall and erupting in flames.

KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM! The remaining three Hornets met similar fates, exploding into fiery wrecks spewing molten debris.

Not a single shot was fired by the Hornets before they were obliterated, victims of Tang Fang’s EMP-infused rounds. Satisfied, he holstered the rifle, cast a sidelong glance at the hovering hive, and sprinted toward the helical tower.

Behind him, a surveillance camera perched atop a signal tower caught the morning light, reflecting it onto Vaiolet’s grimace—a man who looked as though he’d swallowed something foul.

---

Five minutes later, the sound of shattering glass reverberated through the air. On the ground floor of the helical tower, shards of bulletproof glass lay scattered everywhere, testament to their resilience against gunfire and blast waves.

Tang Fang stepped into the vast, sunlit atrium. Pristine stone floors mirrored the golden sunlight refracting from the ceiling above.

"We’ve finally arrived," he murmured, exhaling deeply. Approaching the navigation terminal, he pressed the activation switch.

"Identity not verified. Access denied." A metallic female voice resonated through the hall.

Denied access? Predictable for an outsider. Unfazed, Tang Fang extended his hand toward the touch panel. Faint electrical currents surged from his fingertips, infiltrating the system.

The screen flickered as firewalls collapsed, revealing the building's structural layout. Scanning quickly, Tang Fang’s gaze locked onto Room 101—marked simply as “Data Center.”

Found it. The nerve center of Apalus’s military-industrial complex. Leaving 30 Marines to guard the entrance, Tang Fang led the rest toward the elevator. Arcs of electricity fried the security systems, and the doors slid open. One by one, the team filed inside.
