Chapter 148: The Battle of Apalus (Part 5)
The closed-circuit cameras around the steel mill were completely destroyed, leaving them clueless about what was happening—except for Du Shaohui. “D–Dei Chief… it’s definitely them. They did this.”
Vaiolet, the impeccably coiffed head of security, finally lost his composure. Slamming his fist onto the table, he barked at Du Shaohui, “You little bastard! I told you to straighten your damn tongue before speaking!”
“I-I tried to straighten it…” Before Du Shaohui could finish, a blur flashed past, and Vaiolet’s PDA smacked him square in the face. “Shut up!” Vaiolet snapped.
“Milton! Deploy those reconnaissance drones immediately!” Vaiolet barked, turning toward another officer.
But there was no response. When Vaiolet glanced back, Milton was frozen in place, staring blankly at the left side of the hall with an expression of pure disbelief.
“What?” Vaiolet followed his gaze to the monitor array on the left wall. On the undamaged screens, a military spectacle unfolded like a chaotic blockbuster film.
Thick black smoke billowed over the factories, casting a shadowy pall. Flames danced wildly, painting the surroundings in crimson hues. Shattered furnaces and tanks soared into the air before crashing down onto buildings and equipment, obliterating everything in their path.
Silver flashes illuminated the scene as flames surged forward like tidal waves, engulfing workshops, production lines, warehouses, control centers, and office buildings alike.
“This… this…” Vaiolet felt his blood run cold, a chill creeping up his spine. In just ten minutes, the situation had spiraled out of control. This level of destruction wasn’t something that could be achieved by two or three people—it would take a full demolition squad of at least a hundred men. How had they gotten inside?
Brave Bastion, the supposedly impenetrable fortress that even gods would hesitate to challenge, had been breached without anyone noticing. The enemy had infiltrated deep into the base. It was humiliation—a disgrace for the entire garrison.
“You useless fools! What are you all doing here? Can someone explain to me what the hell is going on?” Vaiolet roared, his face contorted with rage, veins bulging in his neck. His eyes blazed like those of a cornered wolf.
No one spoke. No one dared answer. The only person who had tried to tell the truth had already been pummeled half to death with Vaiolet’s PDA.
“Captain, we’ve received a call from headquarters,” a communications officer stammered nervously.
At the mention of command, Vaiolet deflated slightly, struggling to rein in his fury. “Patch it through to the central screen.”
“Yes, sir.” The officer swiped his console, and a middle-aged lieutenant colonel with thinning hair appeared on the main display.
“Vaiolet, what the hell is going on? Why are there explosions coming from inside?”
“I… I don’t know yet. There’s been a malfunction with the surveillance system, and I’m deploying UAVs to investigate the situation right now.”
“Useless! What good are you if you can’t handle this? Is this how the Empire wastes its resources?”
Ironically, the same words Vaiolet had hurled at his subordinates moments ago now rebounded onto himself. He gritted his teeth but dared not retaliate, instead nodding meekly. “Lieutenant Colonel Luke, please rest assured. I’ll get to the bottom of this immediately.”
“Well, hurry up. If you can’t figure it out within ten minutes, prepare to lose your head.” With that, Lieutenant Colonel Luke’s image vanished from the screen.
A frosty silence settled over the room as Vaiolet turned to personally operate the reconnaissance drones. Just then, a voice tinged with both melancholy and awe piped up behind him. “D–Dei Chief… look… i-it’s them.”
“To hell with you, Du Shaohui! Are you sent by the devil to torment me?” Vaiolet whirled around, ready to explode—but froze when his eyes landed on the monitor above Du Shaohui’s head.
The factory grounds were awash with fire and smoke, a scene straight out of an apocalyptic nightmare. But that wasn’t the focus. Amidst the chaos, agile figures darted between rooftops and machinery like panthers, moving with lightning speed. They fired bursts from their weapons, sparking electrical discharges as flames trailed closely behind them.
“What… is this?” Vaiolet’s eyes widened in shock. “Du Shaohui, zoom in on the footage.”
“Y-yes…” Despite the swelling on his face and bruises under his eye, Du Shaohui seemed oddly cheerful, as if he’d just swallowed a jar of honey. With a few taps on the touchscreen, he magnified the images, revealing the nimble forms of Marines in action.
“Good God, who are these guys? How did they get in? And what kind of advanced powered armor are they wearing? These aren’t rebels—they’re far too sophisticated.”
Vaiolet stared dumbfounded at the screen. Figures equipped with jetpacks leaped between structures, targeting massive reactors. Each time a flash of electricity sparked, another tank exploded, sending shockwaves rippling outward and hurling debris high into the air.
“D–Dei Chief, look over here.” Du Shaohui pointed to another monitor.
For once, Vaiolet didn’t lash out. Following the direction of Du Shaohui’s finger, he saw a hulking figure clambering up the steel railing beneath a colossal vacuum induction furnace at the iridium refining center. Despite his bulky appearance, the man moved with surprising agility, scaling the ten-meter structure in mere seconds. Reaching the top, he pounded his chest like Tarzan before aiming a dark barrel at the enormous furnace.
“What the hell is he doing? At such close range, detonating the combustible material inside will unleash an explosion equivalent to thousands of tons of TNT… This is suicide!” Vaiolet watched the Marauder onscreen, his expression one of disbelief.
“Damn, who is this guy? Has he lost his mind? If that thing blows…” Another guard spread his fingers wide, mimicking an explosive bloom.
“Idiot. Seeking death.” Du Shaohui flipped off Housen’s antics, though to everyone else, the two might as well have been cut from the same cloth.
“BOOM!” The vacuum induction furnace erupted in flames, and a torrent of fire and shockwaves burst forth from the hole carved by Judicator grenades, engulfing the surrounding area. Steel beams, platforms, conduits, and concrete chunks flew skyward like molten lava from an erupting volcano.
The reckless figure was hurled backward by the blast wave, spinning through the air like a cannonball. He slammed into a concrete wall fifteen meters away, leaving a deep crater.
“Idiot…” Though no one said it aloud, the collective sentiment was clear.
But then came the moment that shattered everyone’s understanding. The figure who had been tossed by the explosion and buried under rubble began to stir. Shaking off the debris, he pushed himself upright, dust cascading from his armored frame. Without hesitation, he charged toward another nearby furnace, clearly intent on repeating the feat.
“Madman. A complete madman…” Everyone in the room was stunned. Who—or what—was this creature? His audacity bordered on insanity. And that turtle-shell-like powered armor… what was it made of? It had withstood an explosion equivalent to thousands of tons of TNT!
Vaiolet wiped sweat from his brow, growing increasingly unnerved. Where had these people come from? Every single one of them seemed like a master of destruction.
“Communications officer! Stop standing there like a statue and send these images to command immediately! If Lieutenant Colonel Luke loses his temper, we’re all dead!”
“Yes… yes, sir!” The terrified officer scrambled to compile the footage and transmit it to headquarters.
---
At Brave Bastion’s defense command center, the large screen flickered with explosions. Unfamiliar silhouettes darted amidst the chaos, dancing like children of flame.
Lieutenant Colonel Luke sat motionless for nearly thirty seconds before snapping back to reality. Fury etched itself across his features as his icy gaze pierced through the room like lightning.
“Inner-city defense officer!”
“Yes, sir!” A soldier with a ramrod-straight spine stood up sharply.
“Activate ‘Hive.’”
“Yes… yes, sir!” The officer relayed the order to his team. “Raise barriers, clear urban networks, activate servos. Hive is online and awaiting deployment.”
“Deploy.”
With the command given, the lead operator flipped the safety lock and pressed the red button on the console.
“The gates are open. Hive deployed.”
Luke glanced at the screen, his expression softening slightly.
Meanwhile, beneath the sprawling walls of Brave Bastion, two massive underground doors spanning hundreds of meters slowly opened. Indicator lights gleamed ominously from the depths below, resembling the glowing red eyes of mythical beasts.
Not only that, subtle changes rippled throughout the Apalus industrial complex. Hidden sections of ground collapsed, revealing tunnels lined with blinking red signal lamps.
