Chapter 15: The Birth of a Battle Pet (Part 1)
As we already know, Elegant Strings had been searching fruitlessly for Anser Array on the opposite bank. Just like us, he eventually figured that the long-haired elven maiden might have taken it upon herself to dive into the water alone and face danger head-on.
Driven by his noble and fervent ranger spirit, he plunged into the river without hesitation. Unfortunately, just as he valiantly dove in, Anser Array happened to surface at that exact moment. I’m certain that Elegant Strings' heroic attempt to rescue her was genuinely motivated by the heart of an elven marksman—but clearly not filtered through his "waterlogged" brain.
Thus, his head filled with water once again, and the calm surface of the river gained yet another floating corpse—a thin, lifeless figure.
“If that’s the case…” Elegant Strings looked thoroughly disheartened. He hung his head and muttered gloomily, “…then didn’t I die twice for nothing?”
In response to his lament, Fei Yin and I could only exchange sympathetic glances.
However, Elegant Strings' clumsy and awkward actions seemed to have won over Anser Array's friendship and goodwill. Her bright, large eyes gazed at the elven ranger’s face as she said gratefully:
“Thank you so much for worrying about me and rushing to find me. I’m really sorry you ended up dying because of it.”
“It’s no problem at all… really,” Elegant Strings quickly waved off her gratitude, his face flushed crimson—not from embarrassment but perhaps excitement or even happiness, glowing like clouds painted by the evening sun. He awkwardly scratched his scalp, chuckling nervously while mumbling, “I mean, I didn’t actually help much… heh heh… didn’t do anything useful…”
A sweet yet strangely awkward atmosphere enveloped our group. Fei Yin glanced between them and gave me a knowing smile. Suddenly, I felt that some subtle shift—something beyond our awareness—was quietly unfolding between these two…
---
There was simply no way we could drag A’Stain, the subdued whirlpool crocodile, back to the Silverstar River near Moonstream City. On land, its movements were far clumsier than in the water. Rather than relying on its four stubby legs to crawl home inch by inch, it would be far more practical to gather a hundred helpers to carry it instead.
Fortunately, the underground river running through Red Mountain turned out to be a tributary of the Silverstar River. Following this route, the whirlpool crocodile could swim straight back to its natural habitat, saving us a great deal of trouble.
Before parting ways, Anser Array playfully tickled the enormous beast's nostrils, pointing toward the exit of the underground stream as they bid each other a reluctant farewell. The mighty aquatic creature seemed to savor the gentle touch of the long-haired elf’s pale fingers, closing its eyes and emitting soft, contented grunts. With a flick of its tail, it submerged into the depths of the underground current, disappearing from sight within moments.
Having completed Anser Array’s class advancement quest, we left the caves of Red Mountain. Outside, we discovered that another horde of dark elves had gathered, blocking the entire mountain path. These reinforcements, wherever they came from, were utterly unlucky to cross our path. We made quick work of them, leaving behind a pile of corpses for Fei Yin to plunder to her heart’s content.
“Damn paupers! Dressing themselves up in flashy outfits but daring to walk around with barely a copper to their name—it’s shameful! They deserved to die!” Fei Yin grumbled incessantly as she greedily stripped every last item from the fallen bodies, stuffing them into her bag. Occasionally, she’d vent her frustration by kicking the corpses in the face with her sharp-toed boots, completely unmoved by the handsome features of the male dark elves.
After this skirmish, I reached level thirty-four, bringing me just one step closer to my own class advancement requirement.
Much like when we arrived, we once again found ourselves trailed by a parade of adorable creatures—“little bears,” “little wolves,” and the like—as we crossed Gemflower Plains. Throughout the journey, Elegant Strings remained the prime target of black-bellied venomous snakes. His face, green from poison, shimmered unnaturally, resembling a freshly polished celery stalk. Yet, despite the torment, he endured without retaliating against the beasts attacking him.
“I’ve always loved animals,” he declared, beads of cold sweat dripping down his brow as he carefully peeled a constricting snake off his arm. Forcing a smile, he added, addressing Anser Array, “Animals are humanity’s eternal friends—I firmly believe that.”
What nonsense! When we teamed up to hunt Rabid Hound Kaplan, I never saw any sign of him wanting to befriend that wild dog. Quite the opposite—he was the most enthusiastic and eager among us to slay it. Fortunately, the venom kept his face an eerie shade of green; otherwise, we’d surely see it flushed red right now.
Back in Moonstream City, we went directly to the beastmaster trainer—an elfish middle-aged man with a small goatee. He seemed delighted by Anser Array’s arrival.
“Ah, welcome back, young blessed one. May Netheria’s dew forever nourish your soul…” he greeted warmly as soon as Anser Array approached. “…You’ve accomplished a difficult task, proving that you possess a heart attuned to nature. Now, you have earned the honor of becoming one of the Children of the Wild. Shortly, I will teach you some basic skills.”
It wasn’t long before Ranger Anser Array—no, Beastmaster Anser Array—learned the art of taming beasts. This fundamental skill allowed her to bond with creatures who would become lifelong companions and allies, sharing both her life and battles. Each beastmaster could only tame three beasts in their lifetime, and once chosen, those bonds were permanent; there was no changing pets afterward.
Seeing her friend successfully complete the transition, Fei Yin eagerly bounded forward, unable to contain her curiosity. “Well? Have you decided yet? What kind of pet do you want?”
Elegant Strings immediately chimed in, practically bursting with enthusiasm. “I hear the black panthers atop Mount Uzig are excellent—they can stealth, ambush, and pack quite a punch. Or how about the purple-winged vipers in Umbriel Valley? They come with poisonous attacks. If you’re looking for a tank to protect you in battle, the mountain gray bears are fantastic—they’re tough and resilient, giving you a fighting chance even if surrounded. And then there’s—” His fervor bordered on absurd, as though he were choosing a pet for himself.
Reflecting on the beasts I’d encountered, few stood out as truly exceptional. Selecting an animal companion was no trivial matter, requiring careful thought rather than hasty decisions.
“You might consider bloodsucking bats—they’re fast and have abilities like vampirism and sonic screeches. Alternatively, the plains cannibal spiders are solid choices too; they’re venomous and can set traps.” After weighing the options, I offered two recommendations I deemed worthy.
“All those suggestions are mediocre compared to what I propose,” Fei Yin interjected confidently. “Little Anser, save all your pet slots until you reach higher levels. Then, I’ll accompany you to capture a dragon as your pet. How majestic would that be?” Her imagination rivaled her obsession with wealth, though the feasibility of this idea ranked somewhere between me defeating Apocalyptic King Darrendel barehanded and convincing Fei Yin to donate half her fortune.
“Dragons are magical beasts, and beastmasters can’t tame magical creatures…” Elegant Strings whispered, gently correcting Fei Yin’s mistake. But good intentions often go unrewarded—in this case, earning him a sharp tug on his already elongated ears… Oh wait, elves naturally have long ears anyway.
“Well…” Overwhelmed by the barrage of suggestions, the long-haired elven beastmaster struggled to decide. She furrowed her brows, pouted slightly, and hesitated, making her appear even cuter. “…I haven’t decided yet. I think I should first look around and see what options are available.”
“I’ll go with you…” Elegant Strings eagerly volunteered, only to pause mid-sentence, realizing he’d known this fellow elf for less than a day. Such intimacy might seem overly forward. A faint blush crept across his cheeks. “…‘We’ will go with you. It’s the weekend tomorrow, so tonight is free.”
Luckily, Fei Yin didn’t notice anything amiss. The mage enthusiastically threw an arm around the elven maiden’s shoulders, gesturing grandly. “Alright, we’ll help you find the perfect pet—the fiercest, strongest companion imaginable!”
