Chapter 14: How to Lure You, Little Croc (Part 2)

To my surprise, my sarcastic comment sparked an idea in Elegant Strings. “Fishing him up might actually be a good plan,” he mused thoughtfully. “Does anyone here know how to fish?”

“I do,” Fei Yin responded immediately, pulling out her fishing rod from her magical bag. As a skilled chef, fishing was one of her essential talents for gathering ingredients.

“But…” Fei Yin hesitated, inspecting the rod in her hands. “What exactly should we use as bait for a whirlpool crocodile?”

The mage’s tackle box contained a dozen earthworms, some bloodworms, and a few fragrant bait bugs soaked in wine. These would work perfectly fine for catching ordinary fish—but using them to lure A’Stain?

Even if the crocodile had suddenly developed a taste for exotic snacks, it would never spot such tiny morsels in the dim, murky waters of the underground river.

“That is a problem…” Elegant Strings muttered, scratching his head, unsure how to proceed.

“Well, I still think you’d make excellent bait on a line!” I declared triumphantly, convinced I’d stumbled upon undeniable truth.

“Why don’t you go be the bait?” Elegant Strings shot back defensively.

“Because you look tender and juicy—much more appetizing,” I replied with mock sincerity.

“And how do you know crocodiles don’t prefer dark, muscular types? Besides, you’ve got more meat than me!” He crossed his arms stubbornly, refusing to budge.

While we were busy bickering, Fei Yin suddenly noticed something alarming.

“Wait… where’s Anser Array? Did anyone see her leave?” she asked, frowning.

At her words, we all froze. Sure enough, when had the girl disappeared? We scanned the area, but the rocky walls surrounding us stood empty, devoid of any sign of her.

“She couldn’t have gone to the other side, could she…?” Elegant Strings fretted aloud before sprinting along the edge of the cave toward the opposite bank.

“We’ll split up and search. She must be around here somewhere,” Fei Yin instructed, pointing me toward the right while she turned left.

“Anser Array!”
“Little Anser!”
“Where are you?!”

We called out her name, scouring every nook and cranny where she might hide, but there was no trace of her. After searching fruitlessly, Fei Yin and I regrouped at the water’s edge.

“No luck on my end. What about yours?” Fei Yin asked, concern etched across her face.

I shrugged helplessly. There was only one place left unchecked—the water itself.

“You don’t think she…” I trailed off nervously.

“It’s possible,” Fei Yin said gravely. From the start, the curious elven ranger had shown an unusual fascination with the massive crocodile. It wasn’t far-fetched to imagine she’d slipped into the water without us noticing.

Fei Yin stared intently at the rippling surface, her brow furrowed. After a moment, she clenched her teeth and made up her mind. “I’m going in to look for her.”

“I’m coming too,” I declared firmly. No way was I letting her dive alone into that death trap.

Just as we steeled ourselves to plunge back into the perilous depths, the water erupted once again. Massive ripples surged outward from the center of the river, signaling the emergence of something enormous.

“It’s coming up!” Fei Yin shouted, pointing frantically at the bubbling water.

“Do you see Anser Array anywhere?” I craned my neck anxiously.

“No sign of her over here! What about your side?” Fei Yin yelled back.

“I—I…” My response caught in my throat as an astonishing sight unfolded before us.

Anser Array, the long-haired elven girl, sat atop the snout of none other than A’Stain, the whirlpool crocodile, as they emerged together from the water. She looked completely unharmed, not even remotely frightened. In fact, she giggled cheerfully, affectionately stroking the beast’s rough, scaly skin.

“Hey, everyone! I brought little croc back!” Anser Array chirped brightly, leaning down to scratch under the crocodile’s chin. A’Stain let out contented grunts—low, rumbling sounds that almost resembled purring—as though he were a well-behaved pet enjoying its master’s touch. The surreal scene left us utterly speechless, our jaws practically unhinged.

“How… how did you manage this?!” I exclaimed, half-tempted to bow down and worship the enigmatic elf.

“Oh, it was easy!” she said breezily, as though taming a monstrous predator was child’s play. “I just swam over, blew my whistle, and he listened to me.”

“Just like that?” Fei Yin gawked, looking like she might swallow her own tongue.

“Yeah, why? Wasn’t it obvious?” Anser Array replied with a shrug, as casual as can be.

A creature that had filled us with terror mere moments ago now lounged docilely beneath this peculiar elven girl’s carefree touch. To add insult to injury, it seemed downright happy about it. Just earlier, it had nearly devoured me whole!

It felt deeply unfair. Even if I wasn’t as pretty as Anser Array, surely the disparity in treatment shouldn’t be so extreme!

“Speaking of which…” Fei Yin glanced around curiously. “Where’s Elegant Strings? Where did he run off to?”

SPLASH!

Before she finished speaking, a loud splash echoed from the opposite shore. It sounded suspiciously like someone—a certain non-swimmer—had plunged headfirst into the water…
