Chapter 122: A Good Senior

When Leon heard the short man’s surprised question, he couldn’t help but shake his head. An anomaly that could communicate with animals? No such thing existed—well, at least not yet. But as it happened, he had just acquired a badge for something related.

[You have obtained your first pet! Successfully unlocked the Black Iron Badge “Pooper Scooper.”]

[Pooper Scooper: A caretaker who must regularly clean up their pet's waste due to urban pet ownership regulations.]

[Equip Effect: Your bond and understanding with your pet improve, allowing you to exchange simple meanings or intentions.]

[Upgrade Path: If you continue caring for your pet for over a month while keeping its health in good condition, this badge will automatically upgrade to the Bronze Badge “Pet Owner.”]

[Hidden Attribute (Passive): You gain a slight increase in affinity toward animals.]

As Leon stared at the gleaming [Pooper Scooper] badge on his stats panel, his resolve to collect more badges only grew stronger. Of the thirteen badges he currently possessed, almost none directly boosted combat power, but each provided exceptional auxiliary effects.

Even without needing high-tier badges like [I Am the Demon] or [Practitioner], which amplified anomalous abilities, even seemingly trivial ones like the [Pooper Scooper] could still pack a punch when paired with the right anomalies.

Hmm…though maybe tossing the bomb should wait for now—it might get someone killed if things went wrong. Glancing sideways at the full-length mirror beside him, Leon spotted the young Husky pup gnawing enthusiastically on a whale-oil bomb. His heart nearly leapt out of his chest as he scrambled to snatch the dangerous item away from the little troublemaker.

That’s pure Husky blood for you, Leon thought wryly. Barely old enough to walk, and already trying to dismantle everything in sight. Sure, hurling explosives through Mirror Dog was flashy—but this pup was far too small to risk throwing them accurately. One misplaced toss, and they’d all be done for.

Precision tasks like targeted bomb-tossing would have to wait until the puppy grew bigger—or until the [Pooper Scooper] badge upgraded, granting Leon better control over its behavior.

“Not long after meeting, and you two are already communicating somewhat smoothly. Looks like you’ve hit it off,” the short man remarked casually, unaware of the near-disaster moments ago. After weighing the returned whale-oil bomb in his hand, he glanced at the sleepy-eyed pup nestled in Leon’s arms and chuckled. Handing the explosive back to Leon, he added, “Though you can’t use water surfaces or other special mirrors to transfer objects yet—just regular ones—since you can communicate simply with this little guy, this tool isn’t completely useless. It’ll serve as a trump card in critical situations.”

“Thank you, Senior,” Leon replied gratefully. He quickly retrieved the small mirror gifted by the man and aimed it at the bomb. With a gentle pat on the puppy’s rear, he prompted it into action.

“Woof~”

With a lazy bark, the sleepy pup lazily wriggled into the mirror world, helping Leon store the explosive safely before flopping down inside. Within moments, soft snores drifted faintly from the reflective surface.

“This little one must be exhausted,” the short man observed with a smile, noticing the puppy sprawled out, paws covering its head. He gave Leon’s mirror a rhythmic tap twice.

“Woof!”

A sharp, crisp bark rang out. Looking down, Leon saw Lisa—the large Golden Retriever—had also entered the mirror realm. After casting a complicated glance at the sleeping pup, she settled herself comfortably and barked twice more at Leon.

“Lisa says this little rascal is quite mischievous and hopes you’ll bear with him…” The short man translated Lisa’s canine communication before pointing to both dogs in the mirror. “If Chief sends you to Rose Manor for rescue operations, let Lisa guide you. She knows my ‘friends’ well.”

“For the next couple of days, she’ll stay in your mirror. Just knock whenever you need directions.” Pausing briefly, the man continued, “Oh, and take this too.”

He tapped the mirror twice, issuing a command. Lisa nodded within the mirror, disappeared momentarily, and returned carrying a palm-sized miniature bed, placing it carefully in Leon’s mirror.

“Chief mentioned your compatibility with demonic anomalies is excellent. Take this—it suits you.” Reluctantly eyeing the [Monster Under the Bed], valued at a whopping 8.7 Leon Points, the short man patted his chest and declared magnanimously, “Since you call me Senior, I ought to act the part. Besides, you’ve seen how many anomalies I possess—I won’t miss one. Go ahead, accept it.”

“In that case, I won’t refuse…” Leon said sincerely, feeling warmth swell in his chest. This senior had given him not only guidance but also tools—and even a bed!

Chief, despite being a bit of a prankster and a notorious drunkard, always stepped up when needed. Emma, though overly cautious at times, shared invaluable experience that helped Leon navigate countless challenges. And now, there was Jerry—a remarkably generous senior. While part of it stemmed from the [Connected Individual] badge linking them, his generosity was undeniable. Truly, the bureau housed many good people.

Grateful beyond words, Leon struggled to find a way to repay the favor. Finally, he made a promise: “Senior, while I’m no expert in combat, I do excel in investigation, interrogation, and gathering intelligence about anomalies. Should you ever require assistance in those areas, please don’t hesitate to ask.”

Perfect. That’s exactly what I wanted to hear.

Outwardly, the "good senior" waved off Leon’s gratitude with modesty, but inwardly, he grinned ear to ear. His generosity today wasn’t solely because he liked the kid; it was also strategic. Rare talents like identifying anomalies were hard to come by, and he fully intended to seek Leon’s help again in the future. Better to grease the wheels now than beg later. Plus, some of the items he’d handed over weren’t entirely his to begin with—they’d been “borrowed” from other branches.

Originally, he’d assumed Leon’s ability to detect anomalies and uncover their costs was impressive enough. But discovering the origins of stolen goods? That changed the game entirely. Clearly, the original compensation wouldn’t suffice anymore. Consider the extra gifts hush money, then.
