Chapter 123: Paying a Visit
After parting ways with the overly enthusiastic "good senior," Leon didn’t rush straight to Rose Manor to rescue anyone. Instead, he returned to his office and picked up the black goat head that he hadn’t seen in days.
On the night of the Lion Massacre—the night when Leon had feigned exhaustion and allowed himself to be captured—all his belongings except for his [Sacred Spirit Pendant] were confiscated by the Police Department. But not long after, the Cleansing Bureau reclaimed them and delivered the items back to Leon’s office.
The black goat, gifted with soul vision, had already sensed its return before Leon even stepped into the chief’s office. As soon as Leon lifted it from the desk, the impatient artifact spoke up without hesitation:
“So? Have you managed to clear your name yet?”
“Mm.”
Leon retrieved a large case issued by the bureau, checked over the sniper rifle Emma had gifted him, then placed the goat head on top of the box. While meticulously cleaning the firearms, he privately communicated through their soul link:
‘For now, things are going smoothly. Both the bureau and the kingdom have concluded that Bobby Lion was responsible for the massacre during Lion's Blood Night. No one suspects me… yet.’
‘That’s good…’
The black goat visibly relaxed at this news. It quickly switched to an encrypted mental conversation, its tone turning serious as it warned:
‘But don’t let your guard down just yet. A duke-level noble is dead, and while the kingdom and your local branch may accept the story, the investigators from headquarters still need to sign off on it. Only then will this whole mess truly be behind you.’
‘I know. But they haven’t arrived yet, so I’ll just keep working normally. The more normal I act now, the less suspicious I’ll seem later.’
After chatting briefly with the black goat, Leon finished maintaining the weapons, packed everything neatly back into the case, and tapped lightly on the small mirror sitting nearby.
Though the tiny husky inside was still asleep, Lisa stirred awake and barked softly before helping store the case away.
“Hmm? A creature from the Mirror World?”
Upon recognizing the small mirror, the black goat couldn’t help but exclaim in surprise:
“What did you do to earn Jerry’s favor? He actually gave you one of his dogs?”
“He didn’t give me Lisa. What he gave me was the little pup next to her.”
After explaining his dealings with Jerry, Leon gestured awkwardly toward the golden retriever, urging her to carefully pick up the sleeping puppy from the mirror. Then, rummaging through his cabinet, he pulled out a few folded shopping bags. First, he stuffed the black goat inside, then paused, reconsidering whether that alone would suffice.
Deciding it wasn’t secure enough, Leon grabbed an old shirt lying around the office, cut off the sleeves, and fashioned a makeshift cushion for the goat’s forehead. Using the severed sleeves, he wrapped them snugly around the sharp horns, creating what could only be described as a cozy, windproof dog bed. Finally, he gently placed the snoozing puppy inside.
“Hold on… You’ve got to be kidding me.”
At first, the black goat hadn’t understood what Leon was doing. But once the faint sound of the puppy’s soft snoring reached its ears, realization dawned—and fury followed close behind.
“I’m a Greater Demon! And you’re using my head as a damn DOG BED?! You—”
“A few days ago, while we were gone, the bureau confiscated a set of goat’s body part.”
After tucking a handkerchief over the sleeping pup, Leon glanced at the suddenly silent black goat and smiled mischievously, mimicking the chief’s smug expression:
“They’ve taken it away for testing now, but the chief opened it briefly. Turns out, it was a goat’s stomach emitting an evil aura characteristic of near-divine Greater Demons… Oh, and what were you saying earlier?”
“…”
‘I was saying… I’m actually quite fond of animals. Especially dogs. Very, very fond…’
Watching Leon channel some of the red-haired woman’s manipulative prowess, the black goat immediately caved, muttering curses under its breath before cautiously asking:
“Leon, didn’t my heart say my stomach was supposed to be with the owner of the Char Department Store? How did it end up in the Cleansing Bureau all of a sudden?”
“Well, because the department store owner’s daughter was kidnapped. When he asked your stomach how to save her, it told him to bring it to the Cleansing Bureau.”
Leon summarized the situation briefly, tied the shopping bag shut, and left the office, carrying the black goat and puppy in one hand and the broom in the other.
“So… My stomach’s ability is answering questions? As long as someone pays the price, it’ll provide answers?”
Hearing the full explanation, the black goat sounded utterly baffled:
“That doesn’t make sense! My stomach should embody greed—the ultimate desire. What does answering questions have to do with that?”
“The chief didn’t elaborate, but I think maybe ‘seeking something’ itself represents the strongest desire a person can have at any given moment.”
Leon shrugged offhandedly before continuing:
“Forget about figuring out abilities for now. This anomaly was submitted by our bureau, so no one else has claim to it. Plus, among us, I’m the one most compatible with demon-type anomalies. Chances are, your stomach will come back to me eventually. We can investigate further once it does.”
“You’d better step up your game, though.”
The black goat sounded genuinely concerned:
“Anomalies obtained outside official missions aren’t usually handed out directly. They require merit points or trades with other anomalies. You’re still new to the Cleansing Bureau, and your record isn’t stellar enough. If someone else claims it before you, it’ll get complicated.”
“The chief already mentioned that. Your stomach came here thanks to the department store owner, remember? She deliberately assigned me this task instead of letting Jerry handle it directly so I’d have a shot at claiming it myself.”
As they discussed strategies for reclaiming the goat stomach, Leon approached a familiar building. After confirming the Secret Investigation Bureau’s sign, he strode purposefully into the lobby.
“Hello, may I assist you?” the receptionist asked politely.
“I’m from the Cleansing Bureau.”
He handed over his ID, then patted the bandage he’d taken from the female prisoner in his pocket. With a grave expression, he said:
“Is Isha here? Full name Isha Hill. I need to speak with her.”
---
“Oh look, there he is—the man little Isha’s been talking about!”
“Eh? Where? Point him out!”
“There. Talking to the receptionist. Black hair, wearing an old coat—that handsome young guy.”
“Handsome? Sure, he’s attractive, but isn’t he a bit scrawny? Isha’s ranked top three in close combat within the department. She’s incredibly fit. If they ever get together, do you think he can handle her?”
“Goodness, must you… Is this really appropriate to discuss here?”
“Why wouldn’t it be? I’m just saying, if he loses a fight against Isha, who’ll protect him? What are you implying?”
“I—I meant the same thing!”
“Tsk tsk, seems like someone’s mind wandered off. Married people sure think differently, huh?”
“You—you’re impossible! So what if I imagined something? Aren’t you all thinking the same thing?”
Flustered, the teased woman stomped her foot and gestured dramatically:
“Just look at him! Skinny frame like that. All Isha has to do is wrap those long legs around his waist, and he’ll probably—oh no, run!”
“I swear, y’all deserve a beating…”
Face red, she chased away her gossiping colleagues, who fled laughing and shouting. Once the coast was clear, the policewoman took a deep breath, smoothed out her disheveled uniform, and walked uneasily toward Leon waiting patiently at the front desk.
