Chapter 136: A Little Gift for You
Wang Ping hadn’t expected Gu Lang to buy equipment from his club, let alone that his "Ping An Outdoor Club" would be renamed by Wang An to the “An Ping Outdoor Club.” What had once been a meaningful name was now twisted into something awkward due to someone's petty sense of humor. (Note 1.)
These two were quite the pair—one with an absurd thought process and the other with a mischievous streak. Wang Ping was so frustrated he forgot to buy cigarettes.
When Gu Lang returned from his bathroom break, he found a certain honey badger glaring daggers at his phone.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Lang asked, picking up the phone. Seeing it was a reply from Wang An, he couldn’t help but feel delighted.
“Boss, let me tell you, this Wang An is incredible—she’s a true outdoor expert, not like those streamers on Douyu,” Gu Lang said as he replied to the messages on WeChat while explaining to Wang Ping. “I heard she was already a black belt in taekwondo during college.”
Wang Ping: …Hmph, all that training just so she could beat me up! Who do you think her sparring partner was?
“She was introduced to me by a friend. They say she’s famous in the outdoor community, participated in mountain climbing competitions, and even won medals,” Gu Lang said dreamily.
Wang Ping: …Hmph, you might not believe this, but every single competitor in that race was a member of our club.
“They say there are conditions to join her club—it’s not open to just anyone! You need some fame in the outdoor world!” Gu Lang started puffing up with pride.
Wang Ping: …Hmph, I set the membership condition myself—just one: pay the fee!
“Hehe, after we get back to Hangzhou, I’ll have to make time to visit Shanghai to complete my membership application. I pulled some strings to get them to offer me professional gear only available to senior members!”
Just talking about it made Gu Lang giddy, imagining top-notch equipment waiting for him.
Wang Ping blinked, envisioning stacks of cash beckoning him instead.
“No way! When I get back, I need to contact Wang An. This rare opportunity can't go to waste—I must convince her to give her dear brother some perks…” Lost in thought, Wang Ping fantasized about setting up a WeChat account where Wang An would send him red packets daily to buy cigarettes. Then he wouldn’t have to rely on Gu Lang anymore. Bliss!
---
A week later, they finally returned to Shengjiawu.
It wasn’t because Gu Lang was dragging his feet; rather, he didn’t dare bring Wang Ping home with his head wrapped in bandages. Even though Wang Ping had recently joined the family, if Gu Lang couldn’t provide a reasonable explanation, Grandma would break his legs.
So, Gu Lang took Wang Ping directly to Hangzhou, hiding out in an apartment under his name for a week until Wang Ping’s wounds healed and new fur grew over the shaved areas.
Though still uneven, the new growth covered the injuries well enough. With Lily’s gift of clothing covering his chest, only the patch on his forehead remained conspicuous.
“Boss, want to change your hairstyle?” Gu Lang asked sheepishly in a living room filled with eighth grade syndrome decor.
Technically, this apartment was a school district property purchased by Gu’s mother when he attended middle school. Though his parents were always busy with business and Grandma lived in Shengjiawu, the house mostly served as Gu Lang’s personal hideout.
While marveling at Gu Lang’s background, Wang Ping wondered if his mom even remembered buying this place.
“Change my hairstyle?”
Gu Lang’s intentions were clear to Wang Ping, who wasn’t happy about the short fuzz on his forehead either. He nodded, allowing Gu Lang to take him to a nearby pet grooming salon.
The shop was bustling with cats and dogs getting haircuts, but Buzz-Cut Bro was definitely their first. The owner rushed over personally, giving Wang Ping VIP treatment.
Ignoring the owner’s question about shaping his head into a square or circle, Wang Ping grabbed a magazine lying around and pointed to a picture of Guo Degang, positioning it above his head.
“Pfft…”
Gu Lang nearly burst out laughing and quickly exited the shop.
The owner didn’t laugh, taking the magazine seriously and comparing it to Wang Ping’s head. Truthfully, replicating Guo Degang’s “peach-shaped” hairstyle was far more challenging than any square or circle. A never-before-seen Buzz-Cut Bro plus an unprecedented peach hairstyle—a true test of the owner’s skills.
Wang Ping shrugged, thinking worst case scenario, he’d still have a buzz cut—just shorter hair that would grow back eventually.
Bored, Wang Ping swished his tail, watching the bizarre haircuts given to the other pets. Perhaps due to the heat, many pets came for trims. Some cats were shaved bald, leaving only their heads and bony frames exposed, tails completely gone.
“Tails…”
As the owner began trimming the white fur around Wang Ping’s injury, he grabbed his tail thoughtfully.
Perhaps the groomer graduated from Blue Cross? His skill was commendable.
When Gu Lang returned, laughing sufficiently, he was surprised by Wang Ping’s new look. The groomer had trimmed the fur around Wang Ping’s injured area to match the new growth, left most of the top untouched, adjusted the sides slightly, and added a widow’s peak for flair.
Thus, what was once a straight bangs style transformed into a peach shape atop Wang Ping’s head.
“Not bad, looks pretty cool!” Gu Lang marveled. He dared not call it cute or adorable, knowing full well the consequences of such words in front of a certain honey badger.
“Yes, yes, your pet is very handsome!” the owner chimed in, likely praising his own handiwork.
Unbothered by the owner’s terminology, Wang Ping stood from the grooming table, turned to face him, picked up his tail, and pointed to a nearby bald-tailed cat.
The pointed-at cat hissed defensively, then remembered its lack of fur and turned away sadly.
Owner: …Shave the tail? What kind of preference is this?
Wang Ping had made a significant decision to shave his tail.
After all, Gu Lang seemed determined not to leave the house until mastering some legendary martial arts, making Wang Ping worry about boredom in Shengjiawu. Now, with a shaved tail, he could at least play games indoors without resorting to unhygienic tongue methods.
After finishing the trim, Wang Ping enjoyed a complimentary wash, cut, and blow-dry session. Careful not to dirty his freshly washed paws, Gu Lang carried him back to the car, ready to head to Grandma’s house.
Thinking of Shengjiawu, Wang Ping missed Dahei, wondering how the silly dog fared patrolling alone.
“Oh right!”
Seated in the car, Gu Lang remembered something, opened the glove compartment, and took out a box. Opening it in front of Wang Ping, he revealed a capacitive stylus.
“Here’s a little gift for you! Use it to play on your tablet!” Gu Lang waved the stylus in front of Wang Ping.
“Hmm…”
Wang Ping glanced at his newly shaved tail and then at the stylus swinging before him. His claws clenched tightly.
“Ouch!”
“What the heck! Why did you hit me…”
“I bought you a gift and you hit me…”
“How many times do I have to say it—don’t hit the face!”
“Ahh…I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
Note 1: "Ping An" is made of the names of MC Wang Ping and his younger sister, Wang An. The term also means "safe" in Chinese, which makes the name of the club particularly meaningful.
