Chapter 117: Untitled

The bureau has already located the hostage?

Upon hearing the red-haired chief’s words, Leon couldn’t help but pause for a moment before reluctantly asking, “Chief, the Sacred Spirit from The Scale of Gold—that was originally summoned by the Marseille family. They have close ties with The Scale of Gold. With such a rare opportunity presenting itself, shouldn’t we—”

“Stop right there. I mean it.”

Seeing that Leon was actually plotting something, the red-haired chief visibly shuddered and emphatically crossed her arms in an unmistakable "STOP" gesture.

“This mission is strictly about rescuing the hostage. Don’t even think about anything else. Especially when it comes to the Marseilles—you’ll do well to keep your distance.”

After laying out her expectations for Leon, the chief rubbed her temples as if nursing a headache and added, “You don’t honestly believe that the whole mess with House Lion is over, do you? You’re not even through the preliminary review phase yet, let alone the formal investigation period. Investigators from Central Command will be arriving any day now.”

“If you so much as breathe the same air as the Marseilles and one of them happens to stub their toe—or worse, chokes on a sip of water—you can bet the scrutiny on you will skyrocket.”

“…”

Having witnessed firsthand the overwhelming power of the gold-tier [I Am the Demon], Leon naturally felt a growing curiosity toward the similarly potent Sacred Spirit series badges. But just as the chief had pointed out, he still carried enough suspicion around him like a shadow. For now, discretion was key; stirring up trouble would only invite more questions—and potential disaster—from the investigators.

The review process would likely wrap up within a week. The Scale of Gold wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, and neither were the Marseilles. He could afford to wait.

“I’ll tread carefully,” Leon promised.

Having taken the chief’s advice to heart and assured her he wouldn’t act recklessly, Leon picked up his assignment slip and turned to leave. But then, as if struck by a sudden thought, he hesitated, looking sheepish before finally speaking up.

“Chief… could I request some time off next week?”

Though he’d only been employed for just over a month, Leon’s absences had already far outweighed his actual working days. And after botching his last mission and disappearing for over a week, here he was again, barely an hour back at work, already asking for leave. Even Leon himself felt awkward bringing it up.

But the red-haired chief, accustomed to Leon’s frequent requests for time off, didn’t seem fazed. Without missing a beat, she pulled out a notebook and pen, shrugging casually. “Go ahead. Your injuries haven’t fully healed yet, and you’ve hardly been home since being detained for questioning. Taking leave is perfectly reasonable… how long are you requesting?”

“Well…” Leon hesitated. “To be honest, I’m not entirely sure.”

He paused, then countered with a question of his own. “Do you happen to know how long a typical ennoblement ceremony usually takes?”

An ennoblement ceremony?

The chief pondered for a moment before replying, “Anywhere from one to four days, depending. For lesser titles like baron or below, where wealth and influence are minimal, it’s usually quick—a banquet to entertain guests, maybe half a day tops.”

“For higher ranks, though, it’s a different story. Those families tend to hold significant sway, and their succession ceremonies often involve royal envoys, internal proclamations of lineage, transfers of property rights, elder council meetings… all sorts of formalities. It could easily take three or four days.”

That complicated, huh…

Leon frowned slightly at this information. “What if they sent all the guests packing, skipped most of the formalities, and only reported the change to the crown? What if most of the key family members were already dead? How short could it get then?”

“In that case, maybe a single day—but what noble family would ever consider doing that?”

The chief blinked in surprise, momentarily halting her note-taking to peer at Leon curiously. “Why are you asking all this, anyway? Are you planning to attend some grand noble’s ceremony?”

“Uh… sort of,” Leon replied awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. Struggling to explain without sounding too bizarre, he tried to soften the blow. “Chief, do you remember the excuse I used when investigating the Goat’s Heart incident?”

“Yeah. You said you were visiting the Lions to confirm your lineage. Why?”

“It’s… uh… kind of related. Turns out, I succeeded. Very, very successfully.”

Clasping his hands tightly, Leon looked at the chief’s bewildered expression and sighed, resigned. “Here’s the thing—I’ve been named the twenty-ninth Duke of Lionheart, and my ennoblement ceremony is scheduled for next Tuesday.”

“…”

“???”

“…”

Shock. Pure shock. A rookie who’d only recently joined the bureau—a mere month ago—was standing here asking for leave because he was inheriting a dukedom?

And to make matters worse, hadn’t Leon personally eliminated the original heir? Was this why he’d done it? No, no, that couldn’t be right. Leon wasn’t that kind of person. Besides, thanks to his “untimely rescue,” nearly all of House Lion’s important figures were dead, leaving the family teetering on the brink of collapse. Who would dismantle a prestigious house just to inherit its hollow shell? That made no sense. But… but…

How does someone casually claim kinship and end up a duke?!

Even the seasoned red-haired chief found herself utterly stunned, eyes wide with disbelief as she struggled to process the absurdity of the situation. For several moments, she simply stared, speechless.

Finally regaining her composure, the chief’s face twisted into an odd expression. “You’re joking, right?”

“Nope, not joking. I’m really about to become a duke…”

After briefly summarizing the events leading to his current predicament, Leon sighed heavily. “Look, I have zero interest in this title. None. But no matter how many times I refused, they went ahead and submitted my name anyway.”

“They were so worried I’d resist that they drugged my hospital meals with sedatives and stationed over twenty guards outside my room. I only managed to escape once I recovered enough strength to fight them off…”

“…”

So that’s why you came back so quickly. It wasn’t because Old Char pulled strings to release you—it was because you escaped after being forced into the ennoblement!

Shaking her head in exasperation, the chief gave Leon a complex look. “Something this important… why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“I wanted to! But every time I tried, you kept pressing me about the Lion Blood Night incident. Then, after explaining that to you, Tom walked in. Afterward, you ordered me to examine him, scolded me for recklessly confronting Bobby Lion, and immediately handed me another assignment. There just wasn’t a chance!”

“…”

Come to think of it… that was exactly how things went down.

After reflecting on the sequence of events, the chief opened and closed her mouth a few times, clearly baffled. “Alright, fine. But if you escaped, why are you asking for leave to attend the ceremony? And what’s your real stance on becoming a duke?”

“As I said earlier, I genuinely don’t care about the title. As for why I’m asking for leave—it’s because attending might give me the perfect opportunity to rid myself of this mess once and for all.”

Pausing briefly, Leon continued, “Chief, what do you think would happen if, during the ceremony, I announced—as the new Duke—that I’m donating all of House Lion’s assets to the crown?”
