Chapter 134: Lili’s Gift

For the past three days, Wang Ping had been living quite comfortably at Yan Lili’s place. Though he was loath to admit it, Wang Ping was something of a local celebrity in certain circles, and Lili happened to be one of his biggest fans. So while Gu Lang’s dramatic farewell speech had sounded over-the-top, Lili took things even further.

Every meal was prepared personally by her, with a variety of delicious dishes tailored specifically for Wang Ping. When the injured honey badger couldn’t bathe on his own due to his wounds, she brought out a small basin of water and carefully cleaned him bit by bit. And as if that wasn’t enough, after each dressing change, Lili would give him a gentle massage. Since he  became a honey badger, Wang Ping had never experienced such pampering.

But, as they say, every silver lining has its cloud. What Wang Ping found hardest to endure was Lili’s overwhelming desire to dress up her pets—not herself, mind you, but him.

On the first day, Wang Ping endured several experimental hairstyles. By the second and third days, however, the fashion choices started veering dangerously toward the feminine side. If it weren’t for the fact that Lili had taken such good care of him these past two days, Wang Ping swore he would’ve clawed her pretty little face the moment she tried pinning a hair clip onto his head.

---

Three days passed. Gu Lang had wrapped up his cooperation with the authorities regarding the Damuge case, and Wang Ping’s wounds were beginning to heal. Thanks to his naturally robust constitution—borderline cheat-code-level—the superficial cuts from the fight had already begun to close. Once healing kicked in, recovery came swiftly.

Still, Wang Pin remained preoccupied with one thing: before leaving Arshan, he wanted to visit the famous Sea God Hot Springs. This was also something Gu Lang had been looking forward to. But when Lili informed them that even though the wounds were healing, they still couldn’t get wet—let alone soak in hot springs—Wang Ping felt like someone who’d stumbled into a treasure trove only to leave empty-handed.

As a result, the honey badger spent most of the day sulking.

At noon, on Wu Min’s recommendation, Gu Lang booked a private room at a mid-range restaurant and invited Wu Min, Yan Lili, and the SWAT officer who’d saved him from the tree to join them for lunch. It was both a thank-you gesture and a farewell dinner for everyone—including Wang Ping.

By this point, Damuge’s fate was sealed. The forensic examination of Sasgo’s body revealed not only injuries caused by a bear but also a fatal stab wound to the heart. The blade matched the signature style of someone’s hunting knife. Suddenly, what had started as a smuggling and poaching case had escalated into murder. According to the SWAT officer, the evidence was irrefutable, and since it was a public prosecution case, there was no way Damuge could wriggle out of it, guilty plea or not.

Because of their professional restrictions, neither police officer could appear on camera. So instead of livestreaming the event, Gu Lang simply gathered everyone together to take photos. Wang Ping, satisfied with how everything had turned out, decided to cooperate fully during the photo session, striking several adorable poses. After all, the wounds hadn’t been for nothing, and he found himself feeling slightly more forgiving toward Gu Lang.

As the group chatted and laughed over lunch, Lili suddenly rummaged through her bag and pulled out a plastic-wrapped package. She opened it in front of everyone, revealing a few tiny outfits inside.

“Huh? Lili, what did you buy?” Wu Min asked, surprised.

Pouting, the girl picked up a pink dress and said wistfully, “I ordered these clothes online for Ping Ping. They just arrived today, but unfortunately, Ping Ping is leaving…”

Wang Ping: … Oh my god, that was close!

“Uh…” Gu Lang didn’t know how to respond. He exchanged a glance with the plainclothes SWAT officer and reluctantly muttered, “Nice… uh, looks good.”

“Right?! You think so too?” Encouraged by the compliment, Lili brightened up instantly and suggested, “Why don’t we try it on right here?”

Wang Ping: … Speak, damn you, Gu Lang! No one will mistake you for being mute!

“This…” Sensing the death glare from Wang Ping, Gu Lang’s face darkened. He resisted the urge to slap himself.

Damn your loose lips!

Sometimes, teammates are utterly unreliable. Watching Gu Lang squirm uncomfortably, Wang Ping decided to take matters into his own paws.

Seated between Gu Lang and Lili, the honey badger turned to inspect the pile of clothes on Lili’s lap. Ignoring the pink dress in her hands, he grabbed a black denim jacket and held it against himself. Apparently, Lili had measured his frame while massaging him; the fit was perfect. Even the sleeves ended precisely at his wrists without covering his claws.

Before Lili could react, Wang Ping snatched the jacket and slipped it on himself.

“Oh, you like this one?” Lili persisted, holding up the pink dress. “But I really like this one better. Maybe you can wear it underneath as a base layer?”

Base layer, my ass…

Pretending not to hear her, Wang Ping awkwardly adjusted the fur that had flipped up inside the sleeve.

“Looks cool!” Gu Lang chimed in, trying to salvage the situation. He snapped a picture of Wang Ping wearing the jacket and showed it to him.

Looking down at the image, Wang Ping saw a buzz-cut honey badger dressed in a sleek black denim coat. A patch of missing fur on his forehead revealed a bandage, and beneath the open jacket, his torso was wrapped in gauze. Cool? Not exactly. More like rebellious punk chic.

“Here, take the rest with you. Let him rotate them,” Lili packed up the remaining clothes, including the dreaded pink dress, and handed them to Gu Lang.

“Thanks! I’ll hold onto them for Boss. How much do I owe you? I’ll transfer the money later,” Gu Lang said quickly, smiling as he accepted the bundle.

“What money? These are for Ping Ping!” Lili waved dismissively.

Gu Lang shrugged and pocketed the items without hesitation, but Wang Ping felt uneasy. Sure, the girl had quirky tastes, but she’d genuinely cared for him. Plus, taking things for free wasn’t exactly his style.

Tugging on Gu Lang’s arm, Wang Ping extended an open paw toward him.

“What’s wrong, Boss? What do you need?” Gu Lang turned around, confused.

Across the table, Wu Min and the SWAT officer watched curiously.

“The bead I picked up before. Give it to me!” Wang Pink pointed at Gu Lang’s pant pocket, still extending his paw.

“In my pocket?”

Reaching in, Gu Lang pulled out the car keys to the Wrangler and placed them in Wang Ping’s paw.

Wang Ping: … Are you serious? Trading beads for cars now?

Truth be told, neither Wang Ping nor Gu Lang particularly valued material possessions. But under the weight of Wang Ping’s pride—and his determination to repay kindness in kind—he opted to use something of his own.

Dropping the keys back on the table, Wang Ping reached into Gu Lang’s other pocket and retrieved the amber bead he’d found in the river.

Under the watchful eyes of the group, the honey badger nonchalantly raised a paw and offered the bead to Lili.

“Wow! Is this really for me?”

Lili’s face lit up with excitement, her cheeks flushing red.

“So that’s what you were looking for…” Seeing everyone’s curious stares, Gu Lang chuckled and explained the origin of the bead, joking that it was essentially his boss’s sole possession.

“Thank you!”

Amid envious glances from Wu Min and the SWAT officer, Lili happily accepted the gift. Upon closer inspection, she discovered a delicate flower preserved within the amber.

“It’s so beautiful!”

“Smooch!”

Without warning, the girl scooped up Wang Ping and planted a kiss on his furry cheek.

“Holy crap!”

Wang Ping froze, staring blankly as he pawed at his kissed cheek. Had he just been kissed against his will?
