Chapter 133: Another Fan

Wang Ping never expected that a single nickname could instantly drop his first impression of the pet doctor to rock bottom. Even more unexpectedly, this person turned out to be his fan.

While Gu Lang’s live streams didn’t have much clout in the outdoor channel, they were practically infamous among pet lovers. And all of it came down to Wang Ping.

Unfortunately, to Gu Lang, this particular honey badger was like a big brother—someone big league, someone you followed. But to netizens, especially the young women who adored pets, there was something irresistibly cute and delightfully offbeat about him.

Like now, for instance. While Wang Ping was clearly sulking on the observation deck with a stern face, one girl saw nothing but cuteness overload—so much so she wanted to pinch his fuzzy cheeks until he squeaked.

The reason he was upset? That blasted nickname “Ping Ping.” It had been years since anyone dared call him that. His parents always used his full name, and only Wang An—his sneaky, younger sister by blood and reputation—used “Ping Ping” just to get under his skin. Every time she did, they inevitably ended up brawling.

But the pet doctor showed zero awareness that her choice of nickname might be problematic. She was still glowing with excitement, which only worried Wang Ping further—if he accidentally clawed her face during a moment of frustration, how would she ever find a boyfriend? Was he supposed to offer up Gu Lang as compensation?

Downstairs in one of the outer rooms, quite a few pets had been left in temporary care. Alongside dogs and cats set for sterilization, there were sleeping hamsters, two parrots, and even a Brazilian turtle. Truly living up to its name, Sea, Land, Air Pet Wellness Center.

As the vet, Yan Lili explained, many tourists brought their pets here while visiting the hot spring resort area, only to realize later that managing them was inconvenient. Some simply dropped them off for safekeeping; others rushed in for emergency treatment. After all, Arshan wasn’t a big city, and besides her clinic, the only other place offering professional veterinary services was the old-school Animal Health Station.

Of course, some people considered the term “Animal Health Station” too rural-sounding, so they preferred her modern-looking clinic instead. Still, Lili admitted honestly, if it came down to medical equipment and expertise, the station was leagues ahead of her facility.

But Wang Ping wasn’t really paying attention to any of that. The moment he heard “hot springs,” he was already fidgeting in his seat, sending subtle (and not-so-subtle) signals to Gu Lang.

Before Gu Lang could catch on, however, his hopes were dashed by none other than Lili herself.

“Too bad,” she said with a sigh. “Ping Ping has wounds right now—he can’t go soaking in the hot springs. Why don’t you just leave him with me while you’re in Arshan, Gu Lang? That way, it’ll be easier for dressing changes.”

Her eyes sparkled with hope, and her reasoning was solid. After all, the little guy was injured—who could be more convenient than a vet?

Before Gu Lang could respond, Wu Min, who’d been watching the scene unfold, nodded in agreement. “Actually, that’s not a bad idea. You should rest tonight—you’ve got work tomorrow helping with our investigation. Bringing… bringing Ping Ping along would just complicate things.”

“Who the hell is Ping Ping?! My name’s Huanhuan—Ah, forget it! I’m Wang Ping!”

Hairs bristling, Wang Ping snapped at Wu Min, his teeth bared in indignation.

Thinking he was just being playful, Wu Min reached over again and pinched his fuzzy cheek.

“Hehe, are you gonna miss your big sis?”

“Will you stop? Be careful not to pull at his injury!” Before Wang Ping could protest, Lili finally stepped in, swatting Wu Min’s hand away protectively and leaning down to shield the honey badger—though she couldn’t resist sneaking in a couple extra rubs of her own.

“Ughhh…” Wang Ping grimaced dramatically. His pride was flat on the floor.

Gu Lang opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again. Suddenly, he realized something: when these two women got together, they might both be talking to him—but neither gave him room to actually answer.

To hide his awkwardness, he pretended to inspect the room, but suddenly remembered something from earlier in the car.

“Oh, Dr. Yan—do you need to give him a shot later?” he asked quickly.

“What?!” Wang Ping instinctively flinched.

“Well, no injection needed…” Lili peeled back the slightly dirty bandage on Wang Ping’s head and frowned. “But we will probably need to shave some fur…”

“Oh yeah!” Lili clapped her hands excitedly. “Can I do a livestream? I’ve done pet treatments before online—they’ll never believe I got to meet Ping Ping in person!”

“Uh…”

Gu Lang instinctively looked at Wang Ping. Like hell he was going to make that decision for him.

“No way!” Before he could answer, Wu Min jumped in. “They can’t appear online yet—it’s part of the case protocol.”

“Ugh…” Both man and beast sighed simultaneously, feeling utterly superfluous.

“Hmph!” Lili huffed and turned away, refusing to talk to Wu Min anymore. Unfortunately, the silence didn’t last five minutes before the two girls were chatting—and arguing—again. No matter how much Wang Ping protested about not wanting his chest fur shaved, he was completely ignored.

It was, without question, the most invisible he’d ever felt in his entire life as a honey badger.

“Eep!”

Just as he was sulking quietly, Lili’s sudden shriek snapped him back to reality. He looked up—and saw three pairs of eyes staring directly at his chest.

“What are you looking at!” Reflexively, Wang Ping raised a paw to cover himself, only to feel something odd against his paw pad. Dazed, he looked down and realized—his nipple had somehow grown significantly bigger.

He barely had time to register this before Lili’s voice rang in his ear.

“Don’t touch it, Ping Ping! Let me get some tweezers!”

Looking closer, stuck in the fluff near his chest wound, was a tick—one that had gorged itself so thoroughly on blood that it had swollen to the size of a soybean. Living in the wild had made him all too familiar with parasites like this. Ticks were silent, unfeeling feeders. Tiny as sesame seeds when unfed, they could embed themselves unnoticed in fur or skin.

Wang Ping sighed inwardly. At least his natural immunity kept the worst effects at bay. But then Lili said the fateful words:

“Oh right! Since Ping Ping was bitten by a tick, he’ll need a tick vaccine shot.”

“WHAT?!”

Gu Lang barely managed to grab Wang Ping before he could leap off the table. “Quick, help me hold him down!”

“Aaaargh!” Wang Ping shouted, kicking Gu Lang square in the face.

Within moments, chaos erupted in the small room. Chairs overturned, tables tipped—the symphony of destruction echoed through the walls.

An hour later, Gu Lang sat on the side, nursing a fresh pawprint across his face, idly trying to soothe the parrot beside him.

Meanwhile, Wang Ping—looking deeply wronged—lay motionless on the operating table. Large patches of fur were gone from his forehead and chest. The chest wound, shallow and clean after scraping against bone, was dressed and covered with a patch. The forehead, however, had taken a broader, irregular hit from shrapnel. Cleaning it had taken forever, followed by cosmetic stitches and several wraps of bandages.

Lili had even brought out a mini Elizabethan collar, but sensing Wang Ping’s murderous glare, Gu Lang intervened quickly. There was no telling what kind of retribution he might suffer once they were alone again.

After everything was settled, Gu Lang checked into a nearby hotel per Wu Min’s instructions, waiting for Captain Liu’s updates. Wang Ping stayed behind at the clinic per Lili’s advice.

Before leaving, Gu Lang gave Lili a quick briefing on Wang Ping’s quirks: he needed his own room—couch was okay, but no sharing a bed. He flushed the toilet himself, but absolutely no peeking. No pet food—meat only, and never raw.

Yan Lili stared wide-eyed. Years of experience as a vet, and this… this was new territory.

But Wang Ping thought nothing of it. Whether human or badger, dignity was important. Comfort could be low, but personal space? Mandatory.

This detour in Arshan stretched out to three whole days.

Sasgo’s body was found the next morning. If not for a large stone downstream, he might’ve floated all the way across the border. As for Naktu, however, his body remained missing.

The police scoured the valley, even recovering Wang Ping’s drone from the trees. But Naktu—and the black bear Gu Lang described—vanished without a trace.

As the sole surviving suspect and leader of the poaching ring, Damuge was taken into custody after minimal treatment. With Gu Lang’s testimony and the evidence Wang Ping had dragged ashore—even if he played dumb and refused to confess—he wouldn’t be walking free anytime soon.

By midday on the third day, a freshly cleaned Wrangler rolled into the community and parked in front of Sea, Land, Air. Gu Lang stepped out, now wearing proper clothes and looking surprisingly presentable.

“Boss! I’m here to pick you up!” he called through the door.

“Time to go home?” Wang Ping burst out from inside, wearing a pink hair clip and a bow tied around his tail, running at full speed.
