Chapter 7: I Love Small Animals (Part 1)
In this world, every life at the moment of its birth is not so different from any other. A tauren calf is as delicate and helpless as an elven infant, and an orc child is just as innocent and naive as a newborn dwarf. Neither race, gender, geography, nor anything else alters the innate divine nature of a baby—it’s what makes them indistinguishable from one another in those earliest moments of existence.
But as time flows forward, these lives grow, gaining minds and awareness, and differences inevitably emerge. These distinctions are often stark and profound, even between twins who look alike and were raised together. It becomes easy to tell them apart because their paths diverge so clearly.
So, what causes these differences? What shapes each of us into individuals rather than replicas of someone else?
I believe that while there are fundamental dissimilarities embedded in our natures by the gods themselves, much of what defines us comes from the choices we make. Every single day, every moment, we face countless decisions—small, trivial ones: Should I turn left or right? Take the carriage or walk? Run fast or move slowly? Step with my left foot first or my right? At first, these decisions are deliberate, weighed carefully. But over time, they become instinctive habits, automatic actions performed without thought. When these tiny choices accumulate over days, months, and years, they form patterns, shaping our unique personalities. And those personalities, in turn, influence how we approach bigger decisions, making our choices more distinct and personal. Thus, we become different—not only from others but increasingly from even earlier versions of ourselves.
Our lives are strung together by endless chains of choices. Often, you might find that the outcome of your decisions isn’t the most important thing; instead, it’s the act of choosing itself—the process, the raw and authentic reaction you have when faced with a decision—that truly matters. The path you choose may not set you apart, as countless others might make the same choice. What truly distinguishes you is why you chose it. That’s where your soul resides, the essence that separates you from every other living being on this earth.
For the people of Falvy Continent, changing professions represents one such pivotal choice—a turning point in fate.
When someone reaches level thirty-five, they can advance beyond their current profession to take on a new identity entirely. This transformation is called “changing classes.” Depending on the chosen route, this change could refine existing skills, amplify certain aspects of their original role, or completely reshape them into something unrecognizable, setting them on a wholly new trajectory of growth.
Every class offers three possible paths upon the change. Take my own profession—the warrior—as an example. Once I reach level thirty-five, if I’m devout and steadfast in my faith, I could ascend to become a paladin. In doing so, I’d earn the blessing of my deity, wielding holy power to defend honor and aid others. My abilities would shift toward protective and healing magic, abandoning the stamina-based combat style I currently rely on.
Alternatively, if I’m exceptionally strong, bloodthirsty, and revel in brutal combat, finding joy in life-or-death struggles, I could evolve into a berserker. With devastating destructive force, I’d intimidate my foes—but only if I ensure they don’t exploit my weakened defenses to strike me down first.
Unfortunately, I’m neither pious enough to embrace divinity nor savage enough to thrive in chaos. So, I’d prefer to advance as a battle warrior, which is, in many ways, the true evolution of the warrior class. This path allows for balanced development, teaching advanced combat techniques that rely on agility and sharp wit rather than blind zeal or brute strength.
Of course, there’s always the option to remain a regular warrior and forgo the change altogether. However, without progressing, I wouldn’t gain access to higher-level skills. The difference in combat prowess between a standard warrior and a battle warrior at the same level is significant. The former would need extraordinary effort to defeat the latter, and the gap widens dramatically as levels increase.
Rangers also face three choices during their class change: marksman, forest warden, or beastmaster. As the names suggest, marksmen specialize in precision ranged attacks, while forest wardens serve as guardians of the woods, blessed by the goddess Netheria. They wield both conventional ranged weapons and nature-based spells, shifting their power source from stamina to mana. Beastmasters, meanwhile, master the art of communicating with wild animals, convincing them to become loyal companions and allies in battle.
When I first saw Anser Array, I instinctively assumed she’d lean toward the benevolent and nurturing archetype of a forest warden. Her elegant beauty seemed perfectly suited to embodying the generous spirit of Mother Nature. Even her massive, impressive musket hinted at potential as a marksman. But to my surprise, she had accepted a quest to become a beastmaster.
The thought of such an angelic young woman spending her days alongside ferocious beasts like wolves, tigers, and bears filled me with a strange discomfort. The juxtaposition of beauty and savagery felt jarring, almost unnatural.
“Thank you all for coming—it means a lot,” Anser Array said after Fei Yin introduced us. She bowed gracefully, a gesture characteristic of elves. Perhaps out of shyness, she avoided meeting our eyes, her cheeks flushed a soft pink, like dawn breaking through morning mist.
“I’m glad to help,” I replied awkwardly. Used to Fei Yin’s brashness, Anser Array’s reserved demeanor caught me off guard. Honestly, I never imagined the money-grubbing mage would have such a pure and gentle friend.
“Ah, Little Anser, no need to be so polite with them—they’re old acquaintances of mine,” Fei Yin chimed in cheerfully, dragging Elegant Strings closer to Anser Array by his cheek. Turning to him with a chilling grin, she added, “Right, Four-Eyes? This guy owes me plenty, so feel free to boss him around however you want…”
Normally, given his usual docile yet comical personality, Elegant Strings would have chuckled nervously, groveled playfully, and showered Fei Yin with shamelessly flattering remarks to demonstrate his loyalty to the “Queen of Coins.” This routine had played out countless times since we met, always entertaining. But this time, something seemed… off.
Elegant Strings appeared dazed, his mouth slightly agape, his cheeks tinged red—not entirely due to Fei Yin’s tugging. Though his thick glasses obscured his eyes, his expression betrayed unease. Through the lenses, his gaze flickered timidly, flitting repeatedly toward Anser Array, wanting to look but too shy to hold her attention for long.
“Fei Yin…” Anser Array, likely unused to her friend’s boisterous behavior, gently pulled Fei Yin back, shooting Elegant Strings an apologetic glance. His bewildered expression, coupled with the bright red imprint on his face, made him resemble a gangly, clueless goose. The sight prompted Anser Array to raise a hand to stifle a laugh, her laughter ringing out like a spellbinding melody.
That enchanting sound snapped the dazed archer back to reality, though his soul seemed to lag behind. His words stumbled clumsily:
“Uh… um… h-hello. I’m Elegant Strings…”
Afterward, he retreated awkwardly to the sidelines, unsure of what to say next.
Fei Yin’s attempt to lighten the mood was undone by Four-Eyes’ bumbling performance, plunging the group back into uncomfortable silence.
“Uh… so…” On the way out of the city, unable to bear the oppressive quiet, I blurted out a question: “Miss Anser Array, why do you want to become a beastmaster?”
She smiled softly. “Because I love small animals.”
