Chapter 6: The Long-Haired Elf (Part 2)
The elven ranger quickly lowered his head and stepped aside, terrified that Fei Yin might catch him in another compromising situation and extort him for all he was worth.
"Hey, Jeff, you're here too! Long time no see—how have you been?" Spotting my arrival, Fei Yin looked genuinely delighted. She walked over to me, her eyes scanning me from head to toe and back again with an almost affectionate curiosity. Before I could even respond, she took a step back, licked her lips hungrily, and gave me a slow, meaningful nod, her gaze gleaming like gold coins catching the light.
"Not bad… your gear…"
Under the mage’s intense scrutiny, I felt an inexplicable chill run down my spine. It was as if her eyes had stripped me bare—not just of clothing but of dignity—and replaced every thread with cold hard cash. In her eyes, I feared I wasn’t much more than a walking piggy bank dressed in currency, ready to be cashed out at any moment. As for myself—the person beneath it all—I might as well have been two slabs of fat, a handful of nails, some soot, half a bucket of water, and a sprinkle of phosphorus.
"Ah, you’re still using this sword?" Fei Yin pointed to the "Swordtooth Shredder" hanging at my hip.
"Yeah, haven’t found anything better yet," I replied, though deep down I suspected there was something otherworldly about Fei Yin’s frail human appearance. There was an aura around her—a sort of draconic presence—that made people feel uneasy in her company. And her obsession with hoarding items and wealth rivaled even that of dragons. At least dragons only collected treasures; Fei Yin didn’t discriminate, not even against worthless hay or twigs.
"Don’t forget—you promised me the money when you upgrade that sword," she said, her wide eyes sparkling mischievously as they lingered on the blade.
"Uh… yeah, sure…" I couldn’t shake the feeling that I now wore an invisible label across my backside: Lamb Ready for Slaughter.
"Huh? Little String, what’s that thing on your face?" Just as Elegant Strings thought he’d successfully diverted Fei Yin's attention toward me—and was silently congratulating himself—she suddenly noticed his new accessory.
"It’s… uh… something Jeff made for me. A new piece of equipment…" Elegant Strings looked utterly miserable, wishing he could bury his head in his own trousers to escape her piercing gaze. He sighed heavily. "You know, my optic nerve focusers broke, and I couldn’t adjust them manually anymore. This fixes my vision—it works perfectly now."
"What? You mean things like this actually exist? Incredible!" Fei Yin’s astonishment widened her eyes further.
"Yeah, yeah…" Her reaction emboldened Elegant Strings momentarily, making him forget his usual caution. Grinning sheepishly, he reached up to touch one of his long ears. "I guess the game’s simulation system is pretty advanced. It uses software to digitally zoom, mimicking optical refraction…"
"Can I see it?" Without waiting for permission, Fei Yin snatched the glasses off his face and perched them on her nose.
"Good grief, are these really glasses? I can’t see a damn thing—not even ghosts!" Stumbling forward a few steps, she promptly lost her balance and plopped onto the ground, squinting through the lenses with exaggerated frustration. "How bad is your eyesight anyway? These lenses are thicker than bricks!"
"About negative 12 diopters… and a bit of astigmatism…" Elegant Strings scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
Negative 12 diopters? Whatever that meant for human eyesight, it clearly shocked Fei Yin far more than the discovery of glasses themselves. Hastily returning the spectacles to their owner, she gazed at him with newfound pity.
"So you’ve been struggling like this the whole time? Oh dear, I’m so sorry! If I’d known how severe your nearsightedness was, I wouldn’t have exploited you so mercilessly."
Her words brought tears to Elegant Strings’ eyes. "Miss Fei Yin, I never knew you were such a kind and considerate soul…"
"But—" Her tone shifted abruptly, mischief dancing in her eyes. "—if you managed to endure such harsh exploitation while practically blind, then clearly you’ve got plenty of untapped potential. Keep it up, young man. I believe in you! Ahahahaha!"
As Fei Yin cackled like a greedy witch, our poor elven ranger turned ashen-faced, tempted to bash his head against those thick lenses just to end the torment.
"By the way, Fei Yin, didn’t you say someone needed help switching classes? Where is she?" Remembering why we were here, I finally spoke up.
"I already messaged her. She’ll be here soon…" Ignoring Elegant Strings, who by now resembled a statue frozen in despair, Fei Yin glanced around distractedly before pointing behind me. "Look, isn’t that her coming now?"
I turned to see an elven woman waving at Fei Yin before striding confidently toward us.
Let me clarify something: Fei Yin is undeniably beautiful. Most women I’ve encountered could easily pass as stunning beauties, including the diminutive gnome ladies whose childlike charm makes them irresistibly adorable, like living dolls. Among Falvy Continent’s many races, perhaps only tauren and orc females struggle to inspire fondness due to their imposing builds and rugged features—but they’re rare enough that even ugliness becomes fascinating. Meanwhile, dazzling beauty is so commonplace it often loses its luster.
But this approaching elf was different.
She was undeniably lovely, with delicate brows, downcast eyes, lips as soft and pink as cherry blossoms, and a neck smooth and pale as carved jade. Yet none of this was extraordinary. Such traits were common among Moonstream City’s elven women—they wouldn’t surpass her beauty, but neither would they fall short.
What set her apart was the cascade of jet-black hair flowing down her back. Each strand shimmered like silk threads, falling past her knees and swaying gently in the evening breeze, blending seamlessly with the night. Moonlight kissed the ends of her tresses, leaving ripples of silver that seemed to dance along her spine, as though she carried the moon’s reflection wherever she went, trailing an ethereal glow in her wake.
She wore form-fitting leather armor paired with sturdy brown boots, and around her neck hung a magical pendant blessed by Netheria, the goddess of nature—marking her as a fellow ranger, like Elegant Strings. But unlike him, her weapon told a very different story.
In her hands rested a massive musket, a weapon typically favored by dwarves for its devastating power and sluggish reload speed. Even among the stoutest dwarves, such a firearm would seem audacious. From stock to barrel, it stretched longer than two arms combined, rivaling a warhammer in size, with a muzzle wide enough to swallow a fist whole. Held by her slender frame, the gun exuded a striking juxtaposition of elegance and raw ferocity, leaving a lasting impression.
Above her floated a name fitting for this serene nocturnal scene: Anser Array. That was her name—a fresh, poetic title that suited the tranquil beauty of the moonlit evening.
