Chapter 8: I Love Small Animals (Part 2)

Looking back, it was those words — “I love small animals” — that landed me in this mess with the long-haired elven woman. And now here I was, dragging my sorry behind through dirt and danger because of a sentence that sounded innocent enough at first.

If only I had known then what Anser Array meant by “Loving small animals,” I would’ve thought twice before tagging along with Elegant Strings on this death-defying detour.

Let’s get one thing straight: Anser Array’s confession of affection for animals was an outright lie. “Love” is far too weak a word to describe what she feels. It's more like a twisted, obsessive devotion — a love so intense it borders on madness. And worse yet, the creatures she adores are anything but small.

“Don’t hit the little bear! Look how adorable it is…” The moment we encountered wildlife, the elegant elf with cascading hair dropped every ounce of poise and grace she ever possessed. She squealed like a child who’d never grown up, eyes sparkling with delight.

But the animal in question? A thirty-level hill bear — monstrous, broad-shouldered, about twice my width, standing on its hind legs as tall as a full-grown tauren. Its mouth bristled with jagged teeth longer than my fingers, dripping with half-chewed meat, roaring so loudly it made the ground tremble. From snout to claw, I couldn’t see a single adorable feature on this beast. And why anyone would call it “little bear” — especially while it was chasing us down with obvious intentions to feast on our tender, juicy backsides — completely escaped me.

At my current level and with my combat experience, I could take out three of these beasts without breaking a sweat. Skin them, dismember them, no problem. But Anser Array wouldn’t allow it. Not swords, not spells, not even a firm poke with a finger. This beautiful elven ranger had a taste all her own. To her, these bloodthirsty monsters were like divine angels or soft plush toys — harmless and lovable. Too bad they didn’t share her sentiment. Their claws still hurt when they swiped at us. Their teeth still tore flesh when they bit.

“How does your friend have such bizarre tastes? Is she mentally okay?” I gasped between breaths, chased to exhaustion by a creature I should’ve dispatched with ease. I shot Fei Yin a look as we ran.

Fei Yin shook her head, muttering under her breath as she cast a quick Haste spell on herself. “She’s done this before. Halfway through a quest and we’re followed by a whole damn zoo.”

“Give me some haste too! I’m about to pull a muscle!”

“You want potions? They cost gold.” She gave me a lazy side-eye, indifferent to my plight.

I should’ve known. This was a setup from the start. Sure, a class-change quest for a level 35 hunter isn’t easy, but adding a level 32 ice mage would’ve been plenty of help. No need to drag Elegant Strings and me into it unless someone wanted cannon fodder to distract the beasts.

The deeper we went, the more trouble we stirred up. Hill bears, midnight wolves, black-bellied vipers — over a dozen in total, trailing us like a dark cloud. Behind us, the forest roared with chaos.

“We can’t keep running! More of them are catching up!” Elegant Strings shouted, glancing back. Then, in sheer panic, he sprinted ahead like a startled deer.

It wasn’t the first time we’d run together, but I’d never seen him this terrified. Normally, even in the worst chases, he kept his cool, tossed jokes at us, teased us for stumbling. Not today.

“What’s wrong with you? You weren’t always this scared!” I yelled over my shoulder.

“I used to be nearsighted! I couldn’t see a thing!” he snapped back, pointing wildly behind him. “Now I realize just how freaking terrifying these things are!”

As he turned, his pace slowed — a fatal mistake. A wolf lunged, snapping its jaws inches from his back.

“Aiyaaaahhh!! What the fuck!!” He didn’t even look back. Just ran like his life depended on it — which it did.

“We need a plan!” Fei Yin shouted. “We won’t outrun them forever!”

As the growls closed in, a reckless idea struck me. I drew my sword mid-stride, tightened my grip on the shield, and prepared for a fight.

“I’ve got a way to slow them down!” I called out.

Anser Array saw my blade and spun around, her face a mix of horror and determination. “No! Don’t hurt the poor little animals!”

Her naive plea felt like a punch to the gut. Of course I wouldn’t harm the animals — I promised her. But who was going to talk them out of ripping me apart? These weren’t fluffy bunnies. They were ravenous beasts ready for dinner.

“Don’t worry,” I said, trying not to let my frustration show. “I’ve got a better plan.”

“Goodbye, Jeff. Rest in peace… once the bears flatten you,” came Elegant Strings’ voice from somewhere far ahead. The coward even waved a white handkerchief like I was already a goner.

I slowed my pace, letting my companions race ahead, giving myself space. When I was about three steps behind, I stopped. Turned around. Face-to-face with the stampede.

A hill bear slammed into my shield like a runaway carriage. I staggered under the impact. Wolves lunged, their fangs tearing at my armor. A viper coiled around my leg, squeezing like it meant business. But none of them were strong enough to kill me fast — just enough to hurt like hell.

Within moments, I was surrounded. In the chaos, I estimated: even the farthest bear was within five feet.

Then, power surged through me — raw, primal stamina flowing from my core to my chest, building in my throat. My instincts screamed to roar — a battle cry born from deep in my soul.

“AAAAAHHHHH!!!”

My voice echoed like thunder — wild, fierce, and filled with fury. The beasts flinched. The wolves whimpered and backed off. Even the viper uncoiled, dropping limply to the ground.

That was Fear Roar, a skill I learned at level 32 from the warrior trainer. For a brief moment, any enemy within five feet would freeze in terror. I remembered how the bandit leader Ridatis used it against me during the saber-tooth thief hunt — left me trembling, unable to fight.

But not everyone fears easily.

One bear, either brave or brainless, charged right at me. Got close enough that my Fear Roar barely affected it — guess eating bear bile really does build courage. It lunged, jaw wide, aiming for my head.

Instinct took over. I swung my shield hard into its nose.

THUMP!

The bear stumbled back, dazed. My Shield Bash had knocked it unconscious. Stood there blinking, swaying on its paws. In that moment, maybe — just maybe — it looked kind of… cute?

Damn it. I promised Anser Array I wouldn’t hurt the animals. Even if honor-bound adventurers sometimes break promises by accident, we still try to stick to them.

I glanced at the bear’s slightly bent nose and the tiny drop in its health bar. Felt guilty. Muttered a curse under my breath.

With the beasts stunned or scattered, I resumed my sprint toward my waiting friends. Soon, I reached the foot of Red Hill — Anser Array’s class-change destination. There they were, perched on rocks.

“Well, well. You actually made it back,” Elegant Strings smirked, feigning disappointment. “Wasted all that prayer time for nothing.”

“Jeff! Did you hurt the animals?!” Anser Array rushed over, concern etched across her face — for the animals, of course. Not for me. Not for my bruised ribs or scraped armor. Sigh.

“Only scared them off,” I lied smoothly. And busted a bear’s nose. Honorable adventurers don’t lie… but selective memory is part of the job description.

She nodded, visibly relieved.

“Grrrrr… I’m gonna lose it…” Fei Yin muttered, biting her lip in frustration. Her eyes lingered on the path behind us. “Those pelts alone would’ve fetched a fortune…”
