Chapter 5: The Long-Haired Elf (Part 1)

The Supreme God Darmos is both just and stern toward mortals. Whenever he closes a door for you, he opens a window; similarly, when he gifts you a pair of glasses, he also sends along a letter.

What? You ask what connection these two things share?

To my knowledge, the only link between them is this: Elegant Strings has just received a pair of glasses—and thus, a letter.

No, this missive wasn’t penned by our heavenly Father of All Gods but rather by Fei Yin, the beautiful yet rapacious ice mage. With trembling hands—aided now by his new glasses instead of squashing his nose against the parchment—Elegant Strings opened his adventurer’s journal to the communication page and read through her magical message.

Thankfully, with the help of his “glasses,” he no longer needed to press his face flat against the book to decipher the words. Though, given the contents of the letter, that might have been preferable.

I took the notebook from him as his face paled and twisted into a forced grin. There it was—the note from Fea Yin:

"Little String,
One of my sisters has a class advancement quest she can’t complete on her own. Get your butt over here and help out. As a token of my generosity, I’ll consider wiping off the loose change from your debt of 6,374,216 gold coins (note: only the digits after the tens place). Also, don’t forget you still owe me an ‘Eye of the Eagle’ pendant, four vials of ‘Dust of Melting Snow,’ a ‘Dawn Prophet’ staff, a ‘Magnificent Embrace’ robe, two ‘Honor’s Praise’ rings, thirty sheets of ‘Complete Beast Hide,’ fifteen bottles of ‘Overflowing Magic Potion’… None of these debts have slipped my mind—they’re all meticulously recorded. I trust you’ll settle them soon."

Aside from the opening line, this lengthy magical letter spanned hundreds of words and listed dozens upon dozens of items. From legendary artifacts like the apocalyptic king Darrendel’s world-shattering weapon to mundane junk such as "chicken feathers" or "dogtail grass," which even litter-strewn streets wouldn’t bother claiming, the list had it all.

In my opinion, while recreating an entire world might not be beyond the power of our Supreme God Darmos, finding every single item on this list within the confines of his creation would surely be no easy feat.

If one were to call this plea for assistance anything, it would more accurately be described as a bill collector's invoice—a fitting reflection of our mage friend’s unparalleled personality and charm.

Being remembered and eagerly sought after by a friend in need should indeed be considered an honor. Yet Elegant Strings seemed to wear this particular honor like a leaden crown. His joy manifested as whiteness in his cheeks and rivulets of cold sweat streaming down his forehead—an unusual display of excitement if ever there was one.

Under Elegant Strings' insistent demand, I reluctantly agreed to accompany him to meet Fei Yin. He insisted I come along because he needed a reliable witness to explain how the coins in his purse had transformed into minerals, then lenses, and finally into the oversized spectacles perched precariously on his nose.

We arrived at Moonstream City late at night. Nestled on the eastern edge of Gemflower Plains, this elven town bore no trace of stone or brick buildings. Every structure grew organically from trees, shrubs, and vines, showcasing Netheria’s exquisite aesthetic sensibilities and creative finesse. Thick branches curved gracefully, forming delicate lines throughout the cityscape. Twigs and creepers wove together to create roofs and walls that shielded inhabitants from wind and rain. Verdant leaves adorned the walls, swaying gently in the breeze, imbuing the scene with life and whimsy.

Silver moonlight filtered through the towering canopy above, casting shimmering reflections on the dancing leaves below. The entire town appeared to sway silently, as though caught mid-dance in some ethereal dream. Compared to the most intricate human architecture, even the humblest elfin hut here made man-made structures seem crude and clumsy—as though mud molded roughly by unskilled hands. No matter how elegant statues or carvings might appear, they paled next to the natural beauty of any leaf glistening under silver moonlight. Nature mocked its imitators here, highlighting their awkward efforts with effortless grace. The so-called "art" cherished by "intelligent races" crumbled before this vibrant miracle, unworthy of comparison.

It’s no wonder elves proudly claimed themselves the noblest race on Falvy continent. Living amidst such divine favor, who could blame them?

“Little String, over here!” Beneath the Great Tree at the heart of Moonstream City stood Fei Yin, the striking ice mage, waving enthusiastically. Clad in a luxurious violet-blue robe embroidered with shimmering silver threads, she wielded a short staff topped with a moon-blue crystal radiating faint frosty energy. She looked far more refined than when we’d first met her, exuding elegance and confidence.

At the sound of her voice, Elegant Strings shuddered visibly. Forcing a strained smile onto his pale face, he tugged nervously at my sleeve before inching forward.

“Oh, dearest, most benevolent, kindest, and most generous Miss Fei Yin, it is an absolute honor to serve you. Not a moment was wasted—I rushed here via carriage at lightning speed to offer my humble assistance.”

“Carriage?” The word struck a nerve. Fei Yin frowned delicately. “You came by carriage? Disgraceful! Utterly disgraceful! Traveling by carriage from Kampnavia to Moonstream costs twenty-seven silver coins. That money could buy two high-efficiency healing potions, four regular mana potions, nine full wolf pelts, thirty bundles of herbs, seventy-two chunks of wild boar meat—or, better yet, lent out as usury, it could grow into eighteen gold coins in twenty years. Eighteen gold coins! How many years’ worth of healing potions does that amount equate to? Which half of your backside is worth nine gold coins? And yet you dare ride in luxury while owing me money? Extravagant! Decadent! Wasteful! As punishment, add this sum to your tab. Remember: you now owe me eighteen additional gold coins.”

With a single sentence, another eighteen gold coins added to his debt. Earlier, I’d wondered how Elegant Strings ended up buried under such staggering liabilities. Now, however, I couldn’t fathom how, despite knowing Fei Yin for so long, he hadn’t accrued an even larger mountain of debt.

Clearly accustomed to such treatment, Elegant Strings wisely refrained from protest. Instead, he wiped the cold sweat from the back of his neck, sidestepped behind me, and shoved me forward.

“Please forgive me for bringing your old acquaintance without permission—our valiant warrior, Mr. Jeffrey Kidd.”
