Chapter 121: You Can Hit Me, But You Can’t Touch My Badger!
“Crash!”
Wang Ping skidded across the ground, leaves scattering as he slid several meters before finally pushing himself up. As soon as he raised his head, he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun.
“Well… Game over,” Wang Ping muttered under his breath.
The last time this happened—at Ngorongoro with his team—Wang Ping had been caught in a crossfire and ended up waking up in a zoo after taking a bullet. And here it was again: another pincer attack. This time, though, the shotgun blast would be impossible to dodge. Its spread was simply too wide.
"Is this really how I’m going down?"
Blood trickled from his forehead into one eye, making him look more menacing than usual. More blood seeped through the fur on his chest where Naktu’s knife had grazed him earlier. Though Wang Ping had managed to deflect most of the blow with his claws, the wound still stung. Thankfully, it wasn’t deep—just superficial cuts for now. The real danger lay ahead: that ominous hole about to appear in some poor badger's skull.
“Tch!”
Damuge spat out a mouthful of blood-tinged saliva, glaring at Wang Ping while keeping the shotgun trained steadily on him. Blood dripped from his hand down the barrel of the gun, pooling onto the forest floor. If anything, Damuge seemed to be bleeding even more heavily than Wang Ping did.
No dramatic speeches or villainous monologues followed; without hesitation, Damuge tightened his grip and prepared to pull the trigger.
Just as death loomed over Wang Ping, an unexpected commotion erupted from behind the bushes beside them. Footsteps pounded, accompanied by heavy breathing. Instinctively, Damuge glanced back, cursing inwardly as he hurriedly squeezed off a shot.
BANG!
A hail of pellets tore into the ground where Wang Ping had stood moments ago. Mud and leaves exploded upward, but the clever badger had already bolted during Damuge's brief distraction. With a frantic scramble, Wang Ping disappeared into the underbrush, using falling leaves as cover.
“Damn it!”
Damuge quickly swung the gun toward the source of the noise, while Naktu readied his blade behind him. Suddenly, a sapling they hadn’t noticed—bent taut like a bow—snapped back violently, lashing out horizontally across their field of vision.
Branches whipped forward, striking both men squarely in the face. Damuge’s shotgun discharged harmlessly into the air before flying from his grasp. Both attackers reflexively closed their eyes, groaning as they collapsed backward onto the ground.
As the tree recoiled back into the bushes, a figure emerged from the left. It was Gu Lang, wielding a sturdy stick and raining blows down upon the two prone figures.
Muttering curses under his breath, Gu Lang continued to swing the makeshift weapon, each strike punctuated by angry shouts meant to steel his resolve. However, unlike Wang Ping—a seasoned fighter who’d faced life-and-death situations—Gu Lang began to slow as he saw the blood staining Damuge and Naktu’s bodies.
“Listen up!” Gu Lang declared, standing tall like a hero stepping onto the scene in a climactic movie moment. “You can hit me, but don’t you dare touch my badger, or I’ll take you down!”
In the live stream chatroom, viewers heard only muffled gunfire and indistinct shouting until Gu Lang’s voice finally broke through hours later:
“You can hit me, but don’t you dare touch my badger, or I’ll take you down!”
“Damn, that’s badass!”
“My man’s got style!”
“Third Brother’s looking sharp!”
“Subscribed! Streamer’s epic!”
“Knew our guy could handle two punks no problem.”
“When are the cops getting here?”
“Screw talking, just beat ’em up!”
“SoftshellTurtleNeedsToGoVegetarian gifted Fishballs x666…”
“SoftshellTurtleNeedsToGoVegetarian: Streamer’s awesome!”
“Who told you to donate?! Stop it!”
“What kind of idiot tips when the streamer hasn’t turned off external audio?”
“Where’s the mod? Kick him out!”
“At this point, who cares about the noise?”
“Haha, those fishball tips don’t even have sound effects…”
“…”
At that moment, Gu Lang spotted the fallen shotgun. Seizing the opportunity while Damuge and Naktu were still reeling, he rushed forward, picked it up, tossed aside his stick, and pointed the weapon at Damuge.
“Get up! Quit playing dead! Weren’t you feeling pretty tough a second ago? Show me that bravado again!” Gu Lang gloated, trying to mask his lingering fear with bravado. Deep down, however, he couldn’t help but feel proud of himself. This has gotta count as another heroic deed, right?
“Holy shit!” Wang Ping, having just emerged from the bushes, froze in disbelief. What? He’d only been gone for a few seconds, and suddenly Gu Lang had everything under control? What had he been doing all this time?
“Tch!” Damuge spat again, sneering at Gu Lang as he struggled to his feet. Beside him, Naktu moved to charge, but Damuge held him back.
“You little punk. Why didn’t you stay hidden? I gotta say, I admire your guts,” Damuge taunted.
“Why should I hide?” Gu Lang shot back. “I was just... biding my time! If I wanted, I could’ve taken you both down ages ago!”
Thinking back to what had transpired earlier made Gu Lang flush with embarrassment. He’d painstakingly climbed down from a tree, wincing as raw skin rubbed against rough bark. At one point, something sharp jabbed uncomfortably between his legs, leaving him walking awkwardly with an inward gait.
Back in the chatroom, viewers were baffled. Hearing Damuge speak fluent Chinese and then hearing Gu Lang respond, they wondered aloud: If Gu Lang hadn’t intervened earlier, who exactly were these poachers shooting at?
“Is that so?” Damuge took a threatening step forward, causing Gu Lang to flinch.
“Don’t move! I swear I’ll shoot!” Gu Lang shouted, raising the gun shakily.
“What are you waiting for?!” Naktu, unable to contain his rage any longer, lunged forward with a side kick, sending Gu Lang sprawling. The shotgun nearly slipped from his hands as he desperately aimed and pulled the trigger.
But survival came first—formality be damned.
Unfortunately, the expected gunshot never came. Only then did Wang Ping vaguely recall: there had been one shot fired when someone rushed out earlier, plus the one Damuge used on him. The shotgun was empty.
Seeing Naktu raise his knife to advance, Wang Ping darted forward, ready to lend a paw. But before he could act, a distant scream echoed from the riverbank, followed by furious roars and animalistic growls.
“Sasgo!” Naktu cried out in shock, freezing mid-step, disbelief etched across his face.
Seizing the chance, Gu Lang scrambled backward, collapsing clumsily as he stared toward the woods. Wang Ping, emerging from the brush, hesitated briefly before retreating alongside Gu Lang.
ROAR!
Moments later, Sasgo’s cries faded, replaced by an increasingly familiar beastly roar.
“It’s a black bear!” Damuge exclaimed, instinctively backing away.
Everyone—including Wang Ping—turned their gaze eastward, toward the dense forest. Branches snapped loudly, and the ground trembled beneath the weight of something massive charging straight toward them.
