Chapter 120: Wang Ping Possessed by the Spirit of War

In Inner Mongolia, in the city of Arshan.

"Are you sure?" A stern voice echoed through one of the offices at the Forest Police Substation on the north side of the county road.

"Yes! The photos sent from higher-ups have been matched. One of them is Damuge, who has repeatedly crossed our borders to poach and smuggle rare wildlife!"

Inside the office, a young officer dressed in uniform was giving a report to a middle-aged man sitting behind a desk. His expression was as stern as his voice.

"Hmph! This gang has used the dense forests and towering peaks of Greater Khingan Mountains to sneak into our country and hunt illegally time and again! This time, we must catch them! They absolutely cannot cross the border!" The older man slammed his fist on the table in anger.

"Yes, sir!" The young officer saluted enthusiastically.

"...What do you mean 'yes'? I wasn't talking to you!" The older man shot him an irritated glance.

"Uh..." The young officer deflated instantly, pouting. "Then who were you talking to?"

"To me."

A voice came from behind, accompanied by a firm hand patting the officer's shoulder. The young man turned around, startled, and quickly stood at attention. "Captain Liu!"

A burly man with a buzz cut, dressed casually, smiled and nodded before stepping forward to salute the middle-aged policeman seated behind the desk. "Chief, I’m ready. Do you have any further instructions?"

The chief stood up, his face serious. "This time, we were able to track down Damuge thanks to an outdoor livestreamer named Gu Lang. During your operation, make sure he stays safe!"

"Don’t worry, Chief. Consider it done!"

...

Deep within the forest, after another gunshot rang out, there was a prolonged silence.

Wang Ping sat on a tree branch, clutching his forehead, wincing in pain. Through the gaps between his fingers, blood could be seen staining his white fur. Earlier, as Damuge fled while holding his nose, he had suddenly turned back and fired another shot toward Wang Ping’s tree canopy. Caught off guard, a piece of iron shot grazed past Wang Ping's eye and left a long gash across his brow. The wound burned fiercely now.

Leaning against the trunk, Wang Ping perched awkwardly on the branch, his chest rising and falling rapidly under the thick coat of fur. His mind wandered hazily, drifting back to Ngorongoro, reliving the battles where his comrades once bled and fell.

His breathing grew heavier, a wave of heat surging through his body, fueling an intense urge to fight.

Below, Damuge, his nose bleeding profusely, hid behind a thicket, pulling thumb-thick shotgun shells from the pocket of his camouflage jacket. Around the forest, a brief quiet settled over everything except for the basket Naktu had dropped, lying silently amidst the fallen leaves.

"Not coming out, huh?"

Wang Ping rose to his feet, panting heavily, letting the blood trickle freely down his cheek. The world around him blurred into a crimson haze. He stepped forward, plucked another pinecone from a nearby branch, and aimed carefully at the bear gallbladder placed atop a woven sack below. With a growl, he hurled it downwards.

Thwack!

The spinning pinecone struck the black bearskin, sending the plastic bag bouncing upwards, spilling its contents—a dark green liquid oozing out.

"How dare you!"

An angry shout erupted from behind the bushes. Damuge emerged, eyes blazing, raising his gun and firing twice in quick succession.

BANG!
BANG!

Wang Ping clung to the branch, unfazed by the pellets whizzing past him, ignoring the needles and bark raining down on him. His gaze locked onto Damuge like a hawk. As soon as the second shot echoed, Wang Ping pushed off the branch with his hind legs, flipping mid-air and lunging directly at Damuge, who was crouched low, fumbling for more bullets.

"What the hell? What is this thing?!"

Before Damuge could react, a shadow darker than a mere pinecone hurtled towards him. Instinctively, he raised his arm to block. Fabric tore, followed by a sharp sting. Blood gushed out, staining his sleeve a deep red.

"Shit... Ahh!"

Damuge stumbled backward, flinging droplets of blood everywhere, the bullet slipping from his grasp and clattering onto the ground.

But Wang Ping didn’t stop. Landing nimbly, he charged again, swiping viciously with razor-sharp claws aimed straight for Damuge’s lower body.

With one hand gripping his shotgun, Damuge instinctively blocked. There was a metallic clang as the force knocked the gun back hard, colliding painfully with his shin.

Stumbling forward, Damuge collapsed to his knees. The shotgun butt slammed into his arm, eliciting a muffled groan.

"Augh!"

Every move Wang Ping made seemed almost instinctual, driven by raw adrenaline. His heart pounded wildly, threatening to burst from his chest. Letting out a ferocious roar, he leapt again, swinging his claws toward Damuge’s head.

"Fuck!"

Blood smeared Damuge’s face, contorted in rage and confusion. No time to think about what kind of creature was attacking him so savagely. Gripping the handle of his hidden blade tightly, he summoned every ounce of strength to swing it forward.

Clang!

Another sharp ring pierced the air as steel flashed. Wang Ping was sent flying backward, rolling violently into the grass on the opposite side.

Panting heavily, sweat poured down Damuge’s forehead, cheeks, and neck—partly from fear, partly from exhaustion. His trembling arm still gripped the knife, blood seeping through his sleeve, dripping onto the carpet of leaves below.

From the nearby tree, rustling sounds accompanied falling needles and bark. A figure slid down, approaching Damuge.

Naktu’s face twisted in anger, ready to unleash a string of curses. But upon seeing the carnage before him, he froze. What the hell happened here? Just moments ago, this guy was fine!

"What’s going on?" Naktu asked.

"There’s no one in the trees, right?" Damuge gasped, not answering but instead struggling to stand, gripping his knife defensively.

"No one," Naktu confirmed, shaking his head grimly. "Damn it, something’s not right."

"Heh! Of course there’s no one. Because that wasn’t a person!" Damuge spat, ignoring Naktu’s reaction. Clenching his teeth, he bent down to retrieve his fallen shotgun.

"Not a person? Then where did the person go…?"

Naktu never finished his sentence. Damuge had already bitten down on his knife, reached into his pocket for more bullets, loaded them into the shotgun, and began advancing toward the bushes—gun in one hand, knife in the other.

At the same moment, the bushes shook violently. A black-and-white blur darted out, weaving an S-shaped path across the ground, sprinting directly toward Damuge.

"What the fuck!"

Without hesitation, Naktu yanked his own blade free and charged after Damuge.

Damuge raised his shotgun with one hand, aiming shakily. But Wang Ping moved too quickly; in the split second of hesitation, he was already upon him. Abandoning the idea of shooting, Damuge swung his waist knife with all his might, bringing it crashing down.

By now, Wang Ping seemed possessed by some ancient spirit of war. His movements were so swift they almost exceeded comprehension. Just as the blade was about to connect, Wang Ping performed an impossible mid-air twist, using the flat of Damuge’s blade as leverage to propel himself upward, claws slashing toward Damuge’s face.

If those claws landed, Damuge would lose at least one eye. Panic surged through him, but momentum carried his body forward, making it seem like he was offering his face willingly.

Just then, a cold glint of metal flashed beside Damuge’s face. Another blade sliced through the air, narrowly missing him and stabbing toward Wang Ping.

Blinded momentarily by the flash, Wang Pin felt a sharp pain in his chest. He managed only a single swipe before being hurled backward once more.
