Chapter 119: Still Waters Run Deep…

The sharp ping of a phone notification, the shout of poachers beneath the tree, the crack of gunfire, and the sound of iron pellets hitting branches—all erupted into the live stream within seconds. Chen Bai, who had just set down his phone, froze in place.

"Shit… Is Gu Lang really this dumb? Filming with the volume on?"

High above, a certain honey badger leapt across the treetops, grabbing a waist pack and clutching it protectively to its chest. Almost immediately, a second gunshot rang out. Wang Ping watched as a cluster of pineapple-sized pinecones shattered on a branch directly in front of him, their outer shells exploding in all directions. The branch wobbled precariously. If a certain squirrel had been around to witness this vandalism, they’d have cried rivers.

Wang Ping’s eyes darted left and right. He quickly placed the waist pack against the trunk, angling the camera so it faced inward—away from the chaos outside. Then, he scampered along the branch, scooping up two pinecones. Only when he held them did he realize they were coated in sticky resin.

"Ew, gross!" he muttered under his breath.

Below, Damuge was busy reloading his shotgun, while Naktu gripped a machete in one hand, scanning the canopy for signs of Gu Lang.

"Could it be... he's not even in this tree?" Naktu frowned, turning toward another direction.

At that exact moment, the honey badger poked its head out from behind a neighboring pine tree, aiming carefully at the back of Naktu’s head before dropping two pinecones in quick succession.

"Watch out!" Damuge shouted, catching sight of the falling objects from the corner of his eye.

Naktu spun around, raising his machete just in time to slice through the first pinecone. It splintered apart on impact, clattering harmlessly to the ground. Startled by the force behind the impact, Naktu shook his arm and took a step back. By then, the second pinecone was already hurtling toward him.

"Bang!"

"Ahhh... bala!" Naktu howled, clutching his bleeding nose as he collapsed onto the forest floor. His machete clattered uselessly beside him.

Seeing blood seep between Naktu's fingers, Damuge hurriedly fired another shot toward the canopy. Up above, Wang Ping barely dodged the spray of pellets, throwing himself flat against the branch. His heart pounded wildly in his chest.

Shotguns, though devastating at close range, required constant reloading—a frustrating limitation. After waiting several tense moments without hearing a third shot, Wang Ping cautiously peeked over the edge of the branch. Sure enough, Damuge was still fumbling with fresh rounds below.

Meanwhile, Naktu, now sporting a bloody nose thanks to Wang Ping’s antics, waved off Damuge’s attempts to fire again. Clenching his machete between his teeth, he began climbing the tree, determined to confront whoever—or whatever—was raining destruction down upon them.

He’d figured it out—there were too many branches in the way. With all that cover, Damuge’s shotgun didn’t stand a chance of hitting anyone in the trees. It made more sense to climb up himself and see where the guy could possibly run.

"Well, aren’t you clever?" Wang Ping muttered sarcastically. He plucked two more pinecones and positioned himself near the trunk, lining up his shots like a sniper. With the perfectly straight trunks of the pines, there was no chance of missing. One by one, he hurled the sticky projectiles downward, each strike landing with satisfying precision.

Naktu could do nothing but grit his teeth and endure the barrage, cursing loudly every time a pinecone smacked him in the head or shoulders. Despite the pain, he kept climbing, driven by sheer stubbornness.

"Tsk tsk… What a tough guy," Wang Ping quipped, watching Naktu struggle upward. When the man got too close for comfort, Wang Ping grabbed the waist pack, slung it over his shoulder, and dashed away along the branches. On the opposite side of the tree, a neighboring pine offered an escape route. With a single graceful leap, the honey badger landed safely on a new perch.

In the live stream, viewers saw only a blur of motion as the camera whipped past bark and branches, eventually settling on a different vantage point entirely. Meanwhile, the bloodied figure of Naktu continued ascending the original tree, seemingly oblivious to the fleeing lens.

"Holy crap! So cool!"

"Tarzan in real life!"

"The streamer is legendary!"

"Such ninja skills!"

"How does he do it?"

"This agility is insane!"

"Why would Third Brother Gu fear these two clowns?"

"He’s not scared of them—he’s scared of the gun!"

"Third Brother? You’re calling him that already?"

"Hell yeah! Anyone who catches criminals deserves respect. Mind your own business!"

"6666, Third Brother forever!"

"I’m sold!"

"What is skill? THIS is skill!"

Back in his office, Chen Bai’s coffee cup sat forgotten in his hand. His eyes sparkled with admiration as he murmured to himself, "Never judge a book by its cover… Still waters run deep indeed…"

But unbeknownst to the cheering audience, the man they hailed as “Prince of the Jungle,” “Real-Life Tarzan,” and “Hidden Genius” stood trembling on a distant branch, listening to the distant echoes of gunfire. Gu Lang gazed anxiously downward, muttering to himself.

"Boss is in trouble—I need to save him!"

"Hiss… Why is it so high up here…"

"Waaah, how do I get down…?"

It seemed Gu Lang had only now realized that while the honey badger had taught him how to climb trees, no one had ever shown him how to descend. Last time, he’d ended up tumbling down after being shot at by a poacher.

"Eh… Gotta try something." Gingerly wrapping his arms around the trunk, Gu Lang attempted to lower himself. But his grip slipped, and he suddenly slid downward with alarming speed.

"Whoa!"

He let out a startled yelp, instinctively tightening his legs around the bark. The friction tore at his pants, leaving him drenched in sweat and gasping for breath.

Elsewhere, Wang Ping had stashed the waist pack securely and angled the camera once more toward the protective cover of the bark. With a mischievous glint in his beady eyes, he turned his attention to the scene below: a middle-aged man staring up at Naktu’s ascent.

Both Damuge and Naktu were convinced their quarry hid somewhere in the towering red pine ahead. After all, the pinecones raining down carried unnatural force and trajectory—especially those aimed squarely at Naktu’s face.

So when Wang Ping launched two more pinecones from a completely different tree, Damuge never saw them coming.

"Thwack!"

One spinning pinecone slammed into the back of Damuge’s skull, sending him staggering forward. The shotgun in his hands jerked sideways, discharging prematurely.

BANG!

A burst of pellets and sparks ricocheted off a nearby trunk.

"Ahh! Damuge, you bastard! Are you trying to kill me?!" Naktu screamed from above, his voice trembling with rage.

Before Damuge could respond, the second pinecone struck him full in the face.

"Oof…"

Clutching his nose, the older man stumbled backward, then bolted into the underbrush.

Back in the live stream, the camera remained fixed on the bark, prompting a flurry of comments from confused viewers. Though Chen Bai’s earlier message had triggered unexpected developments, it appeared Gu Lang had managed to evade danger—for now. Why he hadn’t replied remained a mystery.

Of course, Wang Ping was far too busy pelting people with pinecones to care about messages. Even if he had wanted to reply, it would’ve been laced with insults. Stupid teammates existed, sure—but rarely ones as hilariously ill-timed as this!

"Oh! Gu Lang’s drone has GPS!"

Chen Bai slapped his forehead, realization dawning. He rushed out of his office, shouting to his assistant, "Quick! Locate Gu Lang’s drone immediately!"
