Chapter 115: Boss, Is That You?
Because of this little incident, Gu Lang fell silent as well. He and Damuge both turned their gaze toward the rustling bushes on the opposite side. The scene gave off an eerie vibe, like a weasel sneaking into a chicken coop, leaving everyone confused.
Gu Lang suddenly seemed to recall something. His face lit up with uncontrollable joy, and he quickly stood up, shouting loudly, "Boss, is that you?"
Throughout this journey, what worried Gu Lang most wasn’t getting lost himself but losing track of a certain badger. Gu Lang had even prepared to contact rescue teams after descending the mountain for a “badger search.”
"Boss? Who’s that? Your companion?" Damuge also stood up, asking while subtly shifting his position slightly away from Gu Lang. At the same time, his hand moved toward the hilt of the knife at his waist.
Gu Lang was completely absorbed in the situation across from him, oblivious to the growing tension around him. Damuge's question went in one ear and out the other, bypassing any thought process entirely.
On the northern side of the pond, a young man emerged through the dense thicket of wormwood grass. Standing under a tree across the way, he straightened up and shook his head at them, muttering a few sentences in Mongolian—words incomprehensible to Gu Lang.
"What did he say?" Gu Lang turned back to ask Damuge.
"Hmm," Damuge’s expression darkened slightly as he squinted at Gu Lang before answering, "He said there’s no one over there. You were calling for your boss? Who’s that?"
Disappointment immediately clouded Gu Lang’s face. He sighed deeply and sat down again. Behind him, Damuge, now visibly impatient, pressed once more, prompting Gu Lang to respond, "It’s a pet I brought along, named Boss. It got separated when we encountered the black bear."
"A pet?"
Damuge froze momentarily, taking some time to process the information. Eventually, he assumed it must be some sort of dog or similar animal that Gu Lang had led up the mountain.
Relieved, Damuge signaled to another young man behind Gu Lang. Then, stepping closer, he crouched beside Gu Lang and patted his shoulder reassuringly. "Don’t worry. Dogs can sniff their way back. As long as it’s not dead, it’ll find its way here!"
"Dead?"
Gu Lang was taken aback, his expression turning incredulous as he looked at Damuge. "Why would you say that?"
"Why?" Damuge raised an eyebrow, his tone laced with mockery. "Do you honestly think it could escape from a black bear’s grasp? Especially since you, its owner, are still wandering these woods."
Gu Lang froze in place, his face pale. Shaking his head, he ignored Damuge’s mocking demeanor and turned toward the water’s edge. There, the young man they called Naktu was still scanning the surroundings, refusing to return.
"Naktu, what are you still doing over there?" Damuge called out in Mongolian.
"Uncle," Naktu turned around, holding up a feather. "I just saw something dragging that woodpecker into the forest. I’m going to chase it down for dinner!"
"Into the forest?" Damuge paused, thinking for a moment before shouting, "It might be a sable! Don’t mess with it; come back right now!"
Naktu hesitated, muttering something under his breath before reluctantly heading back.
Not far from where Naktu stood, Wang Ping lay hidden in the underbrush, his small eyes fixed unblinkingly on the young man. Beneath him, two tiny claws clamped tightly over the woodpecker’s beak, pinning its wings down while its feet scratched futilely against the ground.
Something about Naktu stirred a familiar unease in Wang Ping. Whether it was his aura or something else, his animal instincts made Wang Ping instinctively wary of this person.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang remained crouched, lost in thought. Suddenly, the sound of a lighter clicking drew his attention. Turning around, he saw the returning young man lighting cigarettes with another companion.
"Hey!" Gu Lang jumped up, frowning. "Put those out! Do you know we’re in the Greater Khingan Mountains?"
The two young men glanced at him, sneering without a word as they continued chatting.
"Hey! Are you deaf? I’m talking to you two!" Gu Lang reached out to snatch the cigarette from Naktu’s hand.
"Eh!!"
Naktu swatted Gu Lang’s hand away, glaring at him before shoving him hard enough to nearly send him tumbling into the pond.
"Naktu!" Damuge rose to intervene, pulling the disgruntled Gu Lang aside. With a cold smile, he leaned in and whispered, "Young man, mind your own business."
"You…"
Gu Lang’s expression faltered. He glanced at Damuge’s insincere grin, then at the two disdainful young men. In that moment, his mind snapped awake, replaying all their suspicious actions during their journey—the three back baskets lying nearby, covered with wormwood leaves, constantly guarded by the pair.
"Just who are you guys? You’re not ordinary mountain villagers, are you?" Gu Lang blurted out coldly.
"Oh crap!"
Clutching the struggling woodpecker, Wang Ping facepalmed in exasperation.
"Gu Lang, you idiot!"
Even as the words left his mouth, Gu Lang regretted them. If it was just a misunderstanding, fine—they’d part ways awkwardly. But if his careless guess hit the mark… Well, that statement might’ve dug his own grave.
Sure enough, as soon as Gu Lang finished speaking, three pairs of eyes locked onto him. Damuge’s smile vanished, replaced by a chilling glint in his eyes.
"My friend, we’re strangers passing by. I haven’t pried into your affairs, yet you keep pressing us. Not very polite, is it?" Damuge sneered.
"Uh, yes, Uncle’s right. My apologies." Gu Lang hesitated for a second, then slapped himself on the mouth, forcing a smile. "Look, I only meant well! I was worried about the danger of fire in such dense wilderness."
"Hmm, fair point." Damuge nodded, turning to bark orders in Mongolian, "You two, put out those cigarettes!"
"Tch!"
Though reluctant, the two young men obeyed, tossing their cigarette butts into the pond. Their gazes, however, remained hostile and contemptuous.
By now, Gu Lang deeply regretted following these strangers downhill. After all, Damuge had mentioned earlier that following the river would lead them off the mountain. Glancing around nervously, Gu Lang searched for an opportunity to slip away.
The atmosphere eased somewhat, though traces of awkwardness lingered. Damuge pulled a plastic bag from his pocket containing a stack of stiff flatbread. Breaking off half a piece, he handed it to Gu Lang, saying, "Here, eat something."
"Uh, thanks!"
Gu Lang reached out to take it but suddenly withdrew his hand, clutching his stomach instead. "Oh no, I suddenly need to use the restroom."
Without waiting for a response, Gu Lang sidestepped Damuge and headed toward the northern woods, laughing awkwardly. "I’ll go relieve myself over there!"
"Oh? Perfect timing!"
Damuge tossed the plastic bag to the others and followed after him. "I need to pee too. Let’s go together!"
Gu Lang: “....”
"Hehe…. sure…" Gu Lang forced a strained smile, looking more like he was about to cry than laugh, as he reluctantly trailed behind Damuge into the forest.
Wang Ping watched Gu Lang’s clumsy performance with a mix of disbelief and resignation. Clever enough in theory, perhaps, but utterly failing in execution. Amateur hour, really.
His gaze shifted back to the two young men guarding their back baskets closely. Wang Ping mulled over his next move.
He was human, not merely an animal relying on scent alone. To confirm whether these men were poachers, he needed to investigate the contents of those back baskets further.
The woodpecker beneath him had stopped struggling. If not for the occasional flicker of its eyelids, Wang Ping might have thought it dead. By now, most of its long feathers had been plucked or broken. Even if released, flying would be impossible—it was practically bald.
"Pity it’s not nighttime. Can’t get too close," Wang Ping tilted his head, pondering how to approach the back baskets undetected.
At that moment, his stomach rumbled again, accompanied by that peculiar blooming sensation.
"Crap…"
Wang Ping’s face turned green.
"Why is this happening again?"
