Chapter 95: An Unexpected Discovery
"The List of Unnatural Deaths and Missing Persons?"
After glancing at the title on the ledger, the female officer looked up in surprise. "Isn't this just a record of Lion family members? If you're trying to find evidence against the Lions, wouldn't this be useless?"
True enough, if one were looking for direct criminal evidence, this document might not seem like much. But when it came to hunting down anomalies—mysterious objects or forces—it suddenly became invaluable.
Take the infamous “Demon’s Heart,” for instance. When its power spiraled out of control, as was bound to happen with someone ill-equipped to wield it, the result was almost always a string of unnatural deaths. And if many of those deaths could be traced back to a single individual? Well, that person’s connection to the Demon’s Heart would become glaringly obvious.
But Leon saw no need to explain all that.
...
"Don’t worry," he said coolly, flipping through the pages of the genealogical records without so much as lifting his head. "This is useful."
To keep his reluctant assistant motivated—and prevent her from slacking off—he added, "These aren’t the original family records. They’re copies made available to outsiders who come here to research. The content has been sanitized; anything too sensitive has likely been removed. However..."
He paused, tapping the page with his finger. "While they can edit events, they can’t easily falsify basic facts—like who lived and who died. So ironically, these semi-public records are often more reliable than the originals."
The moment she understood what he meant, the policewoman’s eyes lit up. Her gaze shifted toward Leon, now tinged with something resembling admiration.
Damn, she thought. This guy’s sharp.
Not only could he instantly assess the reliability of information, but he also had an uncanny knack for interrogation, and his marksmanship was nothing short of legendary. No wonder he’d earned a spot in the Police Department’s “secret division”. He really was a rare talent.
As Leon continued poring over the genealogy, oblivious to her scrutiny, the woman couldn’t help but see him in a new light. Even the furrow of his brow as he flipped through the pages seemed imbued with intelligence.
"...Hmm."
Leon, meanwhile, was growing increasingly uncomfortable under her intense stare. This woman, who usually radiated skepticism, was now looking at him like he was some kind of genius mastermind. It was unsettling.
Shifting slightly away from her, he muttered, "Yeah, that’s what I meant." Then, after a beat, he added, "Also, remember, the Lion family isn’t exactly a tight-knit clan. Internal rivalries run deep, and those prone to using underhanded tactics don’t limit themselves to external enemies—they’ll stab their own kin in the back given half a chance. So..."
"So we should prioritize anyone connected to multiple victims or missing persons," she finished for him, snapping her fingers in sudden realization. She smacked her thigh lightly, eyes wide with awe. "One death could be coincidence, but multiple connections? That screams perpetrator. And someone willing to take such drastic measures within their own family won’t hesitate to go even further outside it. Compared to minor players, these people will leave behind more damning evidence."
She sighed, shaking her head. "Why didn’t I think of that? You’re... really something else."
"..."
Leon resisted the urge to roll his eyes. How had she gone from openly doubting him to practically fawning over him in the span of ten minutes?
For God’s sake, he thought, shifting uncomfortably again. Can you tone it down? Seriously. Your previous disdain was easier to handle than this weird hero worship.
"I’ll get started right away," she declared, completely unaware of his discomfort. Energized by her newfound purpose, she called over a servant to fetch paper and pen before diving into the task with renewed vigor.
Seeing her finally focused—and mercifully stopping her strange staring—Leon let out a quiet sigh of relief and returned to his own work. The room fell silent except for the rhythmic rustle of turning pages.
Each had their own goal: She sought proof of the Lion family’s crimes, while Leon hunted for clues about the lost goat’s heart. Both worked meticulously, losing track of time as hours slipped by.
By the time the sun began to dip below the horizon, Leon’s notes contained nearly thirty names. Though the policewoman’s list was shorter—only eight or nine entries—it still held promise.
...
You know what? Leon thought, closing the genealogy book and stretching his stiff neck. Maybe bringing her along wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
Glancing at her scribbled list, he was pleasantly surprised to find five or six names overlapping with his own "sudden success stories" list. These individuals had risen inexplicably to prominence while being linked to numerous suspicious deaths within the Lion household. Unless the current holder of the Demon’s Heart was some unusually passive type, the culprit was probably among them.
To cover all bases, he widened the scope slightly, accounting for the possibility that the artifact’s wielder might already hold high status or lack interest in wealth. Still, the pool remained manageable—no more than seven or eight suspects. He was closer than ever.
Chief really knows best, Leon mused, recalling the absurd yet effective excuse of posing as a long-lost relative. Within mere hours, they’d made significant progress. Had he followed The Black Goat’s reckless suggestion—to sneak into the mansion at night and interrogate anyone smelling faintly of the goat’s heart—the operation would have been far less efficient, not to mention dangerous.
Reminding himself to emulate Chief and Emma’s strategic thinking rather than descend into brute force, Leon glanced at the policewoman, who now appeared stuck on something. Rather than interrupt her, he stepped out to fetch dinner, placing a plate of food beside her.
"Take a break," he said simply.
"Huh? Oh, okay."
She accepted the meal, mechanically spooning soup into her mouth without tasting it. After swallowing, she clenched her fists tightly, then hesitated, staring at Leon across the table. There was something she wanted to say—but couldn’t quite bring herself to voice.
"What?" he asked, noticing her hesitation. "What’s wrong?"
"It’s... uh..." She licked her lips nervously, teeth gnawing at her lower lip. "Leon, I’ve got a question..."
His expression remained blank as he waited for her to continue.
"If—hypothetically—you turned out to actually belong to the Lion family... what would you do?"
"..."
"Uh...?" Leon blinked, utterly baffled.
