Chapter 110: Who Gives You the Courage to Call Me Huanhuan
Not long after, silence once again enveloped the forest.
The sunlight danced on the surface of the stream, casting golden flashes through the trees. The rustling sound of leaves being crushed echoed as a roe deer cautiously emerged from the woods, its head darting nervously. Just as it stepped toward the water to drink, its body suddenly tensed, as if struck by some unseen horror. In the blink of an eye, it bolted back into the depths of the forest.
On the opposite bank of the narrow stream lay a massive black bear, sprawled motionlessly on the shore, as though deep in slumber.
“Ding-dong ding-dong~ Ding-dong ding-dong~”
A persistent cellphone ringtone emanated from beneath a tree not far from the bear. If anyone had been present, they would have been baffled—how could there possibly be a call coming through in this remote, signal-less wilderness?
After ringing for nearly ten seconds, the call disconnected. But moments later, the phone began to ring again, relentless in its persistence.
From beneath the bear’s bulk came the sound of rustling leaves. Then, from between the bear’s hind legs, a furry little paw emerged, wriggling free from the thick fur. Summoning all his strength, Wang Ping managed to pry apart the bear’s tightly clenched thighs and wriggle his way out. He rolled down the length of the bear’s leg, landing with a thud on the ground before gasping for air.
“Holy crap… I almost suffocated under there…”
Gulping down lungfuls of fresh forest air, Wang Ping collapsed onto the ground, leaning against the bear’s leg. His face was a mixture of relief and sheer exhaustion.
What an awkward situation! Who could’ve predicted that attacking that particular spot would cause the bear to pass out in agony?
Still, amidst the embarrassment, Wang Ping couldn’t help but feel a twinge of gratitude. At least this was a male bear—if it had been a female, who knows how things might have turned out?
“Ding-dong ding-dong~ Ding-dong ding-dong~”
The insistent ringtone continued to blare from beneath the shade of the tree where Gu Lang had left his backpack.
Wang Ping glanced over at the pile of belongings, recalling that Gu Lang hadn’t even bothered to take his pack when he fled—who knew where he’d run off to now. With a sigh, Wang Ping reached up and patted the bear’s massive leg behind him.
“Both of you are really something else. It’s such a shame you two didn’t hit it off.”
Pushing himself upright, Wang Ping waddled over to the tree where Gu Lang’s things lay scattered.
The backpack rested on the ground, and the source of the incessant ringing was inside. Wang Ping flipped open the bag and peered in, spotting the fanny pack Gu Lang had earlier detached from his waistband and tossed inside. Inside the fanny pack, along with the drone controller, sat the phone, still ringing insistently.
“Who on earth is calling at a time like this?”
After a moment’s hesitation, Wang Ping decided to check. Using his paw, he fished out the fanny pack, unfastened the Velcro, and tipped it upside down. The drone controller and phone clattered to the ground.
Flipping the phone over, Wang Ping realized it wasn’t an incoming call—it was a WeChat video invitation. On the screen was Chen Bai’s smiling face.
After some deliberation, Wang Ping reluctantly pressed the button with his tail to answer the call.
“Hmm?”
He swiped twice, but the phone remained unresponsive, still ringing. Glancing down, Wang Ping noticed that fine fuzz had grown back on the previously bald tip of his tail.
“Damn it… Why do you grow hair when you’re not supposed to and refuse to grow it when you are?!”
Grumbling, Wang Ping shoved his tail aside and leaned closer to the screen, extending his tongue to tap the “accept” button.
“Ding…”
A notification tone sounded, and Chen Bai’s anxious face appeared on the screen. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, his expression froze upon seeing Wang Ping’s close-up honey badge mug. Wang Ping even heard the faint clatter of the phone hitting a desk.
“Oh crap… uh, what? Where’s Gu Lang?” Chen Bai stammered, trying to regain composure.
Wang Ping shook his head, unsure how to respond. After a pause, he raised a paw and pointed vaguely in the direction Gu Lang had fled. What Chen Bai made of that was none of Wang Ping’s concern.
When the livestream had abruptly cut off earlier, both the online audience and Chen Bai were left bewildered—and more than a little worried. Gu Lang had a history of mishaps, after all.
But seeing Wang Ping reassured Chen Bai somewhat. The pet was safe, so presumably, nothing too serious had happened—perhaps just a technical issue.
“Uh, Huanhuan…” Chen Bai forced a smile, addressing Wang Ping directly, having only met him for the second time. “Could you go fetch Gu Lang for me?”
“Huanhuan?” Wang Ping’s eyes widened in exasperation. “Huanhuan is NOT my name! Who do you think you’re talking to?”
With a firm shake of his head, Wang Ping conveyed one simple message: I’m not doing it.
Chen Bai: …
Damn, this pet has quite the personality.
Assuming Gu Lang might still be nearby, Chen Bai raised his voice, ignoring Wang Ping entirely. “Gu Lang! Are you there? Did something happen to the equipment? That custom drone I gave you has built-in livestream functionality! Just log into the control app on your phone, and you’ll see the drone option under camera settings… Hello?! Can you hear me?”
“He can’t hear you!”
Wang Ping grimaced as Chen Bai’s amplified voice echoed through the phone. Instinctively, he glanced over at the unconscious bear lying by the stream.
“For crying out loud, keep your voice down! You’re gonna wake that thing up!”
Without caring whether Chen Bai saw him, Wang Ping scowled and ended the call with a swipe of his tongue.
“Ding…”
On the other end of the line, Chen Bai stared blankly at the abruptly disconnected video feed. After a long pause, he sighed, tossing the phone aside and returning to his laptop. As Gu Lang’s direct supervisor, his primary concern was ensuring the man’s safety—the livestream itself was secondary. With no further attempts to reconnect, Chen Bai used his admin privileges to post a note in Gu Lang’s livestream chat explaining the situation.
Back in the forest, Wang Ping waited a while longer, relieved that Chen Bai hadn’t called back.
“Who knows where Gu Lang ran off to…”
Carrying the phone, Wang Ping took a few steps before stopping abruptly and turning back to glance at the fallen drone controller.
“Let’s see if it still has any juice…”
This time, without hesitation, Wang Ping tapped the phone screen with his tongue, navigating to the drone’s control interface. To his surprise, the drone’s camera feed lit up immediately, showing the ground-level view of nearby tree trunks and fallen leaves.
“It actually still works!”
Excited, Wang Ping grabbed the controller and quickly maneuvered the drone into the air. Circling above the treetops, he scanned the surroundings until he spotted the familiar glimmer of the stream below. Guiding the drone closer, he finally located its position near the edge of the forest.
“Idiot Gu Lang! How could he miss such an obvious location?!”
As the leaf-covered drone descended in front of him, Wang Ping felt a small sense of satisfaction return.
“First priority: find Gu Lang.”
Running over, Wang Ping retrieved the drone and packed it back into the fanny pack along with the controller and phone, which he then slung over his own tiny shoulders.
“Oh, right!”
Remembering something, Wang Ping rummaged through Gu Lang’s backpack, pulling out a power bank and portable Wi-Fi device. These too were stuffed into the already overstuffed fanny pack. When the power bank proved too bulky to fit, Wang Ping simply strapped it alongside the drone.
Passing by the still-unconscious bear, Wang Ping gave its arm a light pat.
“Sorry, buddy. I had no choice. Hopefully, I haven’t scarred you for life. If this delays your chances of finding a mate… well, just try to look on the bright side, okay?”
