Chapter 94: The Treasure Blossom and the Lion

Do you even hear yourself?

After Leon's response, the female officer's expression could no longer be described as merely "complicated."

A man who was considered a radical among radicals had just grilled one of the rebellion's top leaders with questions so sharp they drove the woman to slam her head against the wall in suicide. And now, after finishing his interrogation, he calmly warned her about the Lion family potentially retaliating like cornered animals—only to then announce that he planned to visit their estate for some kind of family reunion.

Wait... whose side are you even on?

The policewoman was utterly baffled by Leon’s contradictory behavior. Though she had a thousand questions bubbling up inside her, seeing the exhaustion etched into his face made her hesitate. Instead of pressing further, she sat down at the other end of the carriage, cradling the unconscious female prisoner.

---

With the entire steam carriage reserved solely for them, there was no need to slow down or stop frequently for passengers. Add to that the driver's clear desire to drop off these troublesome individuals as quickly as possible, and the vehicle reached its maximum speed.

Thanks to all these factors, it took less than half the usual time for the carriage to arrive at Redwood Avenue, where the Lion family resided. The driver wasted no time ushering the group out, practically shoving them onto the pavement.

Leon, who had managed a brief nap during the ride, looked noticeably better. His complexion improved slightly, and the cold wind whipping past seemed to erase any lingering signs of fatigue. Ignoring the policewoman’s hesitant glances, he grabbed his belongings—a goat’s head and a broom—and surveyed the surroundings before heading toward the towering redwoods at the far end of the avenue.

True to its name, Redwood Avenue boasted two colossal redwood trees standing nearly a hundred meters tall. Their reddish-brown bark and massive trunks, which averaged over eight meters in diameter, were an unusual sight in this industrial capital city. Such monoliths belonged more naturally to ancient forests than to a bustling urban center like this one.

But for certain elites, such incongruities were precisely the point. The harder something was to achieve, the more impressive it became—a testament to their power and exclusivity.

These two redwoods had been forcibly transplanted from hundreds of miles away under royal decree. They stood as gifts to the kingdom’s most prestigious noble families, planted proudly at the entrances of their private estates. According to the royal proclamation, these long-lived trees symbolized the enduring loyalty of the monarchy’s staunchest supporters, meant to thrive alongside the nation for generations.

Unfortunately, the royal gesture turned out to be embarrassingly presumptuous.

The Treasure Blossom family didn’t last long after receiving their tree. Within years, they spearheaded a violent coup attempt to overthrow the monarchy. Betrayed and defeated, every member of the family was executed beneath the very tree gifted to them.

As for the other family—the once ambitious and pioneering Lionheart clan—they devolved into what was now infamously known as the Lion family, one of the three great cancers plaguing the kingdom. Where once they expanded the realm’s borders, they now festered like a malignant growth within its heart.

Honestly, those trees might as well have come with a curse. There was something eerie about how both families met such grim fates.

Using credentials from the Cleansing Bureau, Leon gained access to this otherwise private road. He paid little attention to the opulent villas and manicured gardens lining the path, instead striding purposefully past them toward his destination.

"Hold on—you’re going the wrong way," the policewoman called out when Leon veered right instead of left upon reaching the end of the avenue.

"That’s not the Lion estate. That’s the old Treasure Blossom family’s property. The Lions are on the other side."

"I know."

Leon walked along the overgrown remnants of the Treasure Blossom estate. Despite being abandoned, the grandeur of its entrance still lingered amidst the ruins. First, he inspected the soil where executions had soaked the ground in blood. Then, he approached the enormous redwood, running his fingers over its cracked, dark brown bark.

Nothing happened.

It appeared that the tree, which had borne witness to the downfall of the Treasure Blossom family and provided timber for their execution platform, remained nothing more than an ordinary redwood. With a mixture of relief and disappointment, Leon withdrew his hand and retraced his steps toward the Lion estate.

"You really are impossible," the policewoman muttered under her breath as she struggled to keep up while carrying the heavy unconscious prisoner. "Do you always feel the need to check every option, no matter how opposite they are?"

Her suspicion peaked when Leon led her straight to the Lion estate’s front gates and announced their purpose to the butler.

---

"Wait... you’re actually here for a family reunion?"

On the carriage ride, the policewoman assumed Leon had simply been too tired to answer her earlier question seriously. Surely, he’d only said “family reunion” to brush her off.

But as they entered the Lion estate and were escorted to a three-story building housing the family genealogy, watching him pore over dusty records confirmed her worst fears. Unable to hold back anymore, she leaned in close and whispered, "Leon, I’ve read your file. Your parents were ordinary people from Lion County. They have nothing to do with the Lion family."

"I know."

Without looking up, Leon sighed at the sheer volume of books spread across two large cabinets. Deciding to delegate, he turned to the policewoman. "Put her down and help me go through the Lion family records."

"What?!"

"What ‘what’? Did you forget you’re working for me now?"

"..."

Realizing her current predicament, the policewoman reluctantly complied. After politely declining offers of assistance from nearby servants (who eyed her warily as she tied up the unconscious woman), she suddenly remembered something and hurried back to Leon, whispering excitedly, "I get it! You’re planning to comb through the Lion family tree, looking for anyone with suspicious histories or sudden rises to wealth, right? Then you’ll dig into their crimes?"

"... Not exactly."

Leon raised an eyebrow, surprised by how close she’d come to guessing his true intent. "I’m not looking for crimes specifically. I’m searching for traces of abnormal gains—people whose success stories don’t add up. Those are the ones most likely to have connections to the Heart of the Goat."

The policewoman stared at him, stunned. When Leon gave a slight nod, confirming her theory, she clenched her fists triumphantly. Glancing nervously at the distant servants, she asked softly, "So, how can I help?"

Leon thought for a moment, then pulled a moderately thick ledger from the shelves and handed it to her. "You’re technically a police officer, right? This should be right up your alley."
