Chapter 109: The Desperate Black Bear

More than a month had passed since the infamous incident on the Maasai plains, where Gu Lang had spectacularly crashed his car. Now, Gu Lang was back in action, transforming into an emotionless escape machine as he bolted away like his life depended on it.

The honey badger standing frozen in the stream was utterly baffled, unsure whether to cry or laugh. What the hell? Fine, run if you want, but why’d you have to smack that bear with that stupid tablet?

No doubt, the black bear currently sporting a look of bewilderment felt much the same way.
You wanna run? Fine, I wasn’t even planning to bite you! So why’d you hit me?!

It took about five seconds for reality to sink in. By the time Gu Lang had sprinted nearly twenty meters ahead, the black bear finally snapped out of its daze. With a thunderous roar, it lunged from the trees, fury blazing in its eyes.

Seriously?! You hit me—no, scratch that, you HIT A BEAR—and now you think you can just walk away? Is there no justice in this world?!

“ROAR!”

Enraged beyond measure, the black bear charged after Gu Lang. Its massive paws slammed into the ground with such force that the earth trembled beneath them. It was clear: this wasn’t over until one of them was dead—or at least severely maimed.

As the scene unfolded—a literal case of “when bears get mad, blood flows within five steps”—there was no time for Wang Ping, the diminutive hero of this tale, to contemplate whether his small frame could withstand the brute force of the beast. Summoning all his courage, he let out a fierce howl, splashed through the water, and charged straight toward the bear.

“WOOOO~”

The sudden, unearthly wail startled the black bear mid-chase. Its enormous body twitched instinctively, and it skidded to a halt, confusion written all over its face as it stared at the tiny creature blocking its path.

Drawing upon years of dominance in these mountains, undefeated and unchallenged, the bear sized up its opponent: a furry little thing barely reaching its shins, with sharp claws and a patch of white fur atop its head. What… exactly was this?

The guy who’d smacked the bear earlier? Yeah, the bear recognized him. Occasionally spotted wandering around the foothills, those two-legged creatures were notoriously weak fighters. But this new challenger? This… badger-like critter? Something about it gave the bear pause.

When faced with the unknown, animals—even apex predators—tend to tread carefully. After all, size doesn’t always equate to strength. In these woods, survival isn’t determined by how big you are; it’s about how smart you play your cards.

Planting its front paws firmly on the ground, the black bear growled menacingly at Wang Ping, baring rows of razor-sharp teeth. Saliva dripped onto the honey badger’s fur as the bear made sure to emphasize just how dangerous it was.

Move aside, little guy, the bear seemed to say. I’m warning you—I’m not messing around.

Wang Ping tilted his head slightly, glancing over his shoulder at Gu Lang, who was still running full speed ahead without so much as a backward glance. Despite wanting Gu Lang to put as much distance between himself and the bear as possible, Wang Ping couldn’t help feeling a pang of irritation.

Some master that guy is!

“ROAR!”

Seeing that his warnings were being ignored, the bear let out another deafening roar, shifting its weight restlessly. Its massive paws shuffled impatiently against the forest floor.

Wang Ping hesitated, sizing up the towering figure before him. Forget fighting prowess for a moment—the sheer weight of this eight-hundred-pound monster was intimidating enough. Even if the bear wasn’t particularly skilled, one swipe of its paw would be more than enough to send Wang Ping flying.

Raising his tiny arms, Wang Ping waved his claws in a placating gesture while shaking his head vigorously. He decided diplomacy might be the better option here.

“Hey, buddy,” he ventured cautiously, “can we maybe avoid violence?”

But the bear, completely clueless about what Wang Ping was trying to convey, grew increasingly agitated as Gu Lang disappeared further into the distance. Unable to contain its rage any longer, the bear raised one massive paw, ready to strike.

“Oh crap, wait—hold on, big guy! Just hear me out!”

Panicking, Wang Ping frantically waved his claws in front of him.

“ROOOOAAARRRR!!!”

Infuriated by Wang Ping’s apparent defiance—was that a taunt?!—the bear’s eyes narrowed dangerously. Killing intent radiated off its hulking form as it exhaled sharply through flared nostrils. Without hesitation, it brought its colossal paw crashing down.

“Damn it! Who said black bears were supposed to be smart?! This thing’s dumber than a sack of bricks!”

Cursing under his breath, Wang Ping leapt out of the way just in time.

BAM!

The bear’s paw smashed into the spot where Wang Ping had been standing mere moments ago. Leaves and dirt exploded into the air, sending ripples across the surface of the nearby stream.

Dodging to the side, Wang Ping used the momentum of the impact to propel himself forward. Grabbing hold of the bear’s hairy leg, he began scrambling upward, aiming for its shoulder.

The size difference was staggering. Even jumping wouldn’t allow Wang Ping to reach the bear’s face, so he relied instead on his agility and quick thinking. Still, staring up at the bear’s massive snout looming above him, Wang Ping felt a twinge of doubt.

Would slapping it only make things worse? And what was a black bear’s weak point again?

Scrambling up the thickly furred leg, Wang Ping caught sight of a shadow looming closer. The bear swung its other massive paw, aiming directly for him.

WHACK!

Barely dodging in time, Wang Ping clung to a handful of fur as the bear’s paw connected with its own arm instead. The blow caused the muscles to spasm violently, nearly knocking the beast off balance.

“ROAR!”

“GRRRAAAHHH!”

Furious, the bear reared up on its hind legs, roaring twice in quick succession. It thrashed wildly, attempting to dislodge the pesky intruder clinging to its body.

Dizzy from the constant shaking, Wang Ping lost his grip and tumbled to the ground, clutching a tuft of fur in his paws.

This is insane!

Gasping for breath, Wang Ping scrambled out of the way as the bear’s paw came crashing down again. While climbing earlier, he’d tried jabbing its skin with his claws—but to no avail. Rumors of summer-fall black bears having skin tough enough to stop bullets didn’t seem far-fetched anymore.

BAM!

Once again, the bear’s heavy paw struck the ground, accompanied by the crushing weight of its body descending. Caught beneath it, Wang Ping found himself face-to-face with something unexpected: a pair of massive, furry… uh, well, let’s just call them “sensitive areas.”

THUNK!

The honey badger was flattened instantly, landing face-first on the forest floor.

“What the—what IS that?!”

Rolling over in the leaves, Wang Ping looked up—and immediately wished he hadn’t. There, dangling precariously close to his head, was the source of the problem.

Wang Ping: ……

“Heh, leaving something this important unprotected? Don’t blame me if I take advantage of it!”

Pushing himself upright, Wang Ping stretched his shoulders, then launched into the air. Swinging his tiny arm with every ounce of strength he possessed, he delivered a resounding slap to the offending area.

“ROAR… URGH…”

The enormous body above him shuddered violently, cutting off the bear’s roar mid-scream. Its hind legs clenched tightly together as it collapsed to the ground in agony.

“Oh, come ON!”

Before Wang Ping could react, a wall of fur and muscle came crashing down on top of him. Worse still, the very spot he’d just slapped—now larger than his own head—pressed uncomfortably close against his face.

“GET OFF ME! MOVE, DAMN IT!”

Every hair on Wang Ping’s body stood on end, especially thanks to the overwhelming stench emanating from the unfortunate appendage. Desperation set in as he flailed wildly, swatting at the offending object with increasing ferocity. Sharp claws left bloody streaks across its surface, but the bear showed no signs of relenting.

“ROOOOOAAAAAARRRRR!!!”

Flat on the ground, the bear convulsed uncontrollably, emitting pitiful cries of pain. Its front paws clawed at the earth, digging trenches in the soil, while its hindquarters trembled feebly, paralyzed by the searing agony coursing through its body.

Despair filled the bear’s eyes as it realized the truth: curiosity could kill a bear too.

“ROOOOOAAAAAARRRRR!!!”

“ROOOOOAAAAAARRRRR!!!”

The anguished bellows echoed through the forest, startling flocks of birds into flight.
