Chapter 4: The Spirit and the Bones (Part 2)
"Take a look—do these suffice?" Long Triangle, brimming with excitement, dumped an armful of bones in front of Longbow Sunshot, barely able to contain his impatience.
Longbow Sunshot nodded approvingly and began sifting through the pile. He weighed one bone in his hand, tapped another, and eventually selected a few long bones of similar length and thickness—mostly femurs and humeri.
In my eyes, Longbow Sunshot was a master craftsman when it came to weapon-making. He carried an assortment of tools and materials wherever he went, his hands moving deftly as if guided by an inner certainty. He polished, buffed, cut, and shaped the bones with ease, altering their forms before joining them together into a slender rod.
"What’s he trying to make?" I whispered to Long Triangle, unable to suppress my admiration for the precision of his work.
"No idea," Long Triangle replied. "Looks like some sort of staff… maybe a long-handled one."
Crack! Before Long Triangle could finish his sentence, one of the bones snapped in half, drastically altering the shape Longbow had just assembled. At first, I thought it was an accident, but Longbow calmly picked up the broken pieces, grinding and tapping at the fractured ends. Clearly, this was no mistake—it was deliberate.
"...Hmm, probably nunchucks then..."
Crack! Long Triangle hadn’t even finished speaking when another bone broke under Longbow Sunshot's hands. The dwarf priest remained unfazed, carefully gathering the fragments and continuing his work without missing a beat.
"...Maybe it’s a three-section staff. Spellcasters tend to favor all kinds of rods..." Long Triangle said, his face glowing with anticipation.
Crack crack crack crack! I have to admit, Long Triangle spoke too soon. As soon as the words left his mouth, the remaining bones shattered simultaneously into evenly sized segments, neatly arranged on the ground.
"...Could it be a nine-section whip...?" Long Triangle muttered uncertainly, his expression turning sour. Though I didn’t know what a nine-section whip was, I’d bet my life that he was wrong again.
Suddenly, the small bone segments split further down their middles, transforming from hollow tubes into jagged shards. Watching Long Triangle pick up the fragments and continue grinding them, he wiped sweat from his brow.
"...I see now—he must be making something like throwing darts or hidden weapons."
"But... aren’t throwing darts supposed to be thicker than toothpicks?" I asked skeptically.
Snap! One final sound echoed as the bone needle Longbow held also snapped in two.
We stared at each other in stunned silence.
Not a single word passed between us.
"Uh… sorry… it seems… my experiment failed…" Longbow Sunshot scratched the back of his head sheepishly as he stood up, addressing our dumbfounded group.
"Are you brainless or just plain stupid? Do you realize how many bones you wasted? Seven! Seven whole bones! They could’ve sold for quite a bit! Don’t you know frugality is honorable while extravagance is shameful? By the sun, let me punish this wasteful criminal!" With his hopes dashed, the orc rogue lunged forward, grabbing the dwarf priest by the neck and shaking him violently, looking ready to strangle him. From Clado and Black Aurora’s expressions, neither seemed inclined to object.
"...Wait... stop... don’t shake anymore... I have... another idea. Let me try again..." Gasping for air, Longbow Sunshot flailed his stubby arms helplessly, struggling weakly.
After what felt like ages, Long Triangle finally released his grip, dropping the nearly lifeless priest onto the ground.
"Go ahead, do whatever you want. There’s not much left anyway…" the orc rogue spat bitterly.
Now, only two long bones remained before Longbow Sunshot. These were rejects from the earlier attempts, overlooked because of their peculiar shapes—they were thick, short, and had unusually large joints, likely due to some kind of bone disease in their original owner.
This time, our weapon maker seemed to have lost interest in intricate craftsmanship. He simply drilled holes through the joint ends of both bones and loosely connected them with a short iron chain. Then, holding them aloft, he twirled them around a few times.
Suddenly, a brilliant flash erupted in Longbow Sunshot’s hand. The two connected bones underwent a subtle transformation: they became smoother and more complete, seamlessly merging with the chain to form a new double-nunchaku staff. A faint azure glow enveloped its surface, hinting at the magical power imbued within.
It’s often the case that pouring your heart into meticulous work can lead to failure, while casual effort sometimes yields unexpected success.
Clearly, this sinister bone nunchaku far surpassed anything Longbow Sunshot currently wielded. It increased physical attack power by 9 points, boosted magical effects by 18 points, added 150 mana and 70 stamina (yes, warriors could also use such weapons), and every twenty minutes triggered a spell effect that enhanced health and mana regeneration by 50%.
This newly forged weapon was perfect for raiding, plundering, and charging into battle—a lethal companion indeed, especially for Longbow Sunshot. His signature move, "Jeet Kune Do," calculated damage by adding physical and magical attack values. This new weapon granted him an additional 27 points of attack power, effectively increasing his overall damage output by nearly two-thirds. I couldn’t fathom how formidable this enhancement would make our already ferocious priest.
Upon seeing the attributes of this newfound treasure, even the orc rogue was awestruck, gaping speechlessly. After a moment, he awkwardly sucked back a string of drool dangling from his lips and collapsed at Longbow Sunshot’s feet. Despite being prostrate, his round belly barely lowered his height. And seeing the orc’s raised rear end towering higher than the standing dwarf elicited a comical impression in everyone present—including myself.
"Big brother... sir... hero... please make me a weapon too... I’m still stuck using a common dagger I bought at level twenty. Have mercy on me..." His groveling demeanor made it hard to believe this was the same person who moments ago had been throttling Longbow Sunshot’s neck.
"Well..." Longbow Sunshot stroked his beard with a sly grin, feigning reluctance.
"We’ve been traveling together recently, so boosting my attack power benefits everyone. For the sake of the party’s future, Comrade Longbow, lend me a hand..." Seeing that simple begging wasn’t working, Long Triangle straightened up dramatically, adopting a noble stance.
"That..." Still unmoved, the dwarf priest continued his act.
"These are my earnings from the last fight..." Long Triangle’s rapid change of tone commanded respect. In the blink of an eye, he was smiling obsequiously, shoving a handful of gold coins into Longbow Sunshot’s palm.
Our weapon maker pocketed the money, nodding contentedly. Then, with mock regret, he said, "It’s not that I won’t help you, but look—what’s left are just splinters and odd-shaped bits. You can’t forge a warhammer or sharpen a blade out of these. Surely you don’t want me to carve you a pair of toothpicks?"
Indeed, the previous experiments had exhausted all usable material. What remained were either too fragmented or bizarrely shaped to craft into practical weapons.
Long Triangle surveyed the pile of bones and shook his head dejectedly. Suddenly, he turned back to Longbow Sunshot.
"Then give me my money back!"
"Huh? You forced it on me yourself."
"That was payment for crafting a weapon. Since you failed, you owe me a refund!"
"Oh? My losses are your responsibility, aren’t they?"
"Enough talk. Pay up or face consequences!"
"No money, take my life instead!"
"Liar!"
"Thief!"
...
Just as they were about to come to blows over the petty sum, a sudden thought struck me...
"Hold on, stop arguing! I have something that might work..."
