Chapter 5: The Corpse Poison Dagger (Part 1)
"Huh?!" At my words, the two brutes, who were about to exchange blows again, froze mid-motion and stared at me as I rummaged through my backpack.
"Found it!" A moment later, I let out a triumphant cry and pulled out something I'd kept for a long time.
It was an enormous tooth, its tip razor-sharp and sturdy enough to gouge deep scratches into solid iron shields. Yes, this was the fang I had yanked from the mouth of Rabid Hound Kaplan.
When I first took this tooth, it was purely out of awe for its ferocity—a keepsake, nothing more. But just moments ago, it struck me that its size made it perfect for a dagger. If we could turn such a sharp beastly tooth into a weapon, who knows what unexpected effects it might produce?
As soon as Long Triangle saw the object in my hand, his eyes lit up with both surprise and delight. He rushed over, snatched it eagerly, and turned it over in his hands, examining it from every angle, clearly entranced. After a brief pause, he hesitated before asking me:
"Jeff… you’d really be willing to… give this to me?"
"I’ve no use for it—it’s just taking up space in my pack."
The burly orc rogue bit his lip. "I can’t take it without paying. Name your price."
And honestly, his sudden formality left me feeling a little disheartened.
You see, I envied the dynamic between him and Longbow Sunshot, or Elegant Strings and Fei Yin. They bickered, teased, horsed around, and even cracked jokes during life-or-death battles. Like when Long Triangle caused Longbow Sunshot to die unnecessarily once, or when Longbow lost all their money—despite the punches thrown, it wasn’t serious. It was intimacy born of true closeness, where apologies weren’t needed because none were expected.
They interacted so naturally, uninhibited, laughing one moment and arguing the next, never worrying about offending each other or stepping on toes. There was something childlike about it—a kind of innocent camaraderie.
But Long Triangle’s overly formal demeanor now told me loud and clear: I wasn’t part of that circle.
"Forget it," I joked, masking my slight disappointment. "Even if you emptied your coin purse, you’d only have a few coppers. Don’t pretend to be generous." I shook the sword in my hand and added, "Besides, didn’t you give me this blade?"
Long Triangle gave me a complicated look, then glanced at the rabid hound’s tooth in his hand. Finally, he reached out and took it without another word, grinning foolishly while patting his belly and pulling a grotesque face at me. Then, elated, he dashed back to Longbow Sunshot, shouting, "Hey, check this out! Just saying—if you mess it up, you owe me a hot pot dinner tomorrow!"
Truthfully, I dreaded the thought of him gushing endless thanks after receiving the fang. His current reaction made me feel infinitely better.
Though Long Triangle continued bantering with me, I could tell Longbow Sunshot was approaching this task far more carefully than when he’d crafted his own staff earlier. He meticulously polished the fang, preserving its lethal point while smoothing the inner curve of the tooth into a sleek, refined edge. When a dangerous gleam slid along the newly honed blade, my gut told me this attempt would succeed spectacularly.
After witnessing the success of the double-nunchaku, Clado and Black Aurora had grown even more fascinated by weapon crafting. They stood quietly to the side, observing the dwarf priest’s work, showing no impatience whatsoever.
To fashion a handle for the tooth-blade, Longbow Sunshot put considerable effort into designing something special. From the pile of bones, he selected a complete set of metacarpal and phalangeal bones, painstakingly assembling them into the shape of an outstretched hand. He even had Long Triangle grip it to test the fit. Once satisfied, he embedded the tooth-blade into the wrist section of the bone-hand. Another brilliant flash erupted, and Long Triangle’s new weapon was finally complete.
We all knew it would be extraordinary, but when we saw its attributes, everyone gasped audibly:
"Wow..."
88 points of damage boost and +19 Agility—just these stats alone were enough to elevate Long Triangle to a whole new level, and they were merely the dagger’s base attributes.
Rabid Hound Kaplan was known for its speed, and its magic crystal had already transformed the sluggish Millionfold into a formidable fighter. This tooth-dagger inherited that legacy by granting an additional ability tied to swiftness: a 30% chance to deal double strikes in a single hit. Essentially, Long Triangle gained roughly a third more damage output for free.
Perhaps due to being crafted entirely from biological materials, the dagger also granted Long Triangle an additional 99 HP. For a rogue with minimal defenses, this extra health could mean the difference between life and death in many situations.
Beyond that, the dagger came with a skill that evoked mixed reactions: every fifteen minutes, it had the chance to unleash a corpse poison, dealing at least 20 damage per second to enemies for thirty seconds. However, since the poison originated from the skeletal remains used in the handle, closer to the wielder, the user suffered twice the harm inflicted on the enemy. By this calculation, activating the skill would likely kill Long Triangle within fifteen seconds, long before the thirty-second duration elapsed.
No wonder the dagger earned the name “Corpse Poison Dagger.”
"This is safer than drinking poison directly—at least there’s no expiration date to worry about…" The orc rogue displayed his unique brand of optimism regarding the skill.
"It’s more humane than jumping off a building; at least you get time to say your last words…" Longbow Sunshot searched tirelessly for some hidden merit in his creation.
"It’s prettier than slitting your own throat—I’m sure people squeamish about blood will love it…" I figured I should chime in too.
"This dagger should last until level fifty." If not for its modest base stats, Long Triangle’s estimate might have been higher. Even so, his prediction was conservative.
"Not only that—once the craftsman levels up, the weapon can be upgraded further…" Longbow Sunshot couldn’t hide the pride in his voice.
According to Longbow Sunshot, a weapon’s properties are closely tied to the raw materials used. While a craftsman can choose ingredients based on preference, the final outcome often involves significant randomness beyond their control. The excellence of the two recent creations stemmed from two key factors: superior raw materials and, perhaps more importantly, sheer dumb luck—the latter proving decisive.
Soon, we witnessed firsthand the wildly unpredictable success rate of weapon crafting. After finishing the exceptional dagger, Longbow Sunshot tinkered with the remaining Petrified Bones for quite some time. Perhaps having exhausted all his luck with the previous successes, he ended up wasting the rest of the material, producing only a “rudimentary bone staff.”
This mundane artifact’s creation carried its own peculiar legend: Longbow Sunshot simply grabbed a shard of bone about the length of a finger, wiped it casually with a rag, and drilled a single hole into it. Before our eyes, a familiar flash signaled its completion.
I must admit, this truly was a “rudimentary bone staff” in every sense. Its sole attribute? “Increases physical attack strength by 0.02 points.” Honestly, this might be the only piece of equipment I’ll ever encounter described with decimal-point precision. In that regard, its collectible value arguably surpassed any world-shattering artifact—it was an unparalleled one-of-a-kind item worthy of historical record.
Sadly, less than three seconds after its creation, its maker unceremoniously tossed it into a coffin and sealed it under a heavy stone slab, as if fearing it might sprout legs and escape into public view.
