Chapter 50: Yanyu’s Coconut Sago Dessert

Lin Tian stared at Gan Yanyu, chewing on the piece of pineapple in his mouth.

It was so sour it made his teeth ache. Pineapple without soaking in saltwater was nothing short of a dental assault.

But then again, Yanyu’s smile was so sweet…

He swallowed the pineapple along with her grin, forcing himself to endure.

After finally managing to chew and swallow, Lin Tian adopted a serious expression, nodding gravely. “Sweet.”

Gan Yanyu furrowed her brows, puzzled. She brought the same finger that had picked up the pineapple to her lips and gave it a tentative lick. Her face scrunched up instantly.

“It’s so sour! Lin Tian, do you even have taste buds?”

“???!!!”

Fine, fine. So this was how she wanted to play? He thought he’d be sharing a meal with a lovely girl, only to realize she saw him as her personal guinea pig for taste-testing.

Once all the ingredients were prepped, Gan Yanyu stood in front of the stove and took a deep breath.

She heated the pan, poured oil, and tossed in the chicken, frying it until golden brown.

Out came the chicken.

In went minced garlic and ginger, releasing their aromatic fragrance into the air.

Then the pineapple—stirred gently but thoroughly.

Back went the chicken.

There wasn’t anything particularly dazzling about her technique. Each step was simple and straightforward.

But the keyword here was—

Steady.

Even the amount of salt and oil was carefully measured three times before being added. Earlier, while preparing the ingredients, Gan Yanyu had chatted casually with Lin Tian. But now, as soon as she stepped into cooking mode, her demeanor transformed entirely. It was as if an invisible barrier had formed around her, isolating her from everything else in the room.

Lin Tian didn’t dare speak or even breathe too loudly.

Perhaps Gan Yanyu wasn’t naturally gifted in the kitchen. But with 100% focus and meticulous attention to detail, she ensured every move was executed flawlessly.

This was Gan Yanyu.

The prodigy musician who might not always be brilliant, but when it came to things she cared about, she approached them with unwavering dedication.

“Done.”

Gan Yanyu scooped the stir-fry onto a plate and set it aside. Lin Tian rubbed his hands together, eager to take a bite.

But her spatula swiftly blocked his way.

“There are two more dishes. Wait until everything is ready. Alright?”

Her voice softened, almost pleading.

“Alright.”

How could Lin Tian refuse when she was already coddling him like this?

“Question,” Lin Tian raised his hand again.

“Yes?”

“Miss Gan, what’s the next dish?”

Gan Yanyu turned her head, her innocent face breaking into a mischievous grin.

“Sweet-and-sour pork ribs.”

“Nope.” Lin Tian shot up in alarm. “That’s way too sugary!”

“What’s wrong with something sweet? Don’t you like sweet food?”

“Well, let me ask again—what’s the third dish?”

“Stir-fried lettuce.”

At least that sounded somewhat normal—but knowing Gan Yanyu, it would still likely be sweet.

“Liking desserts doesn’t mean every meal has to taste like dessert, Miss Gan. Can’t you stop sticking to your character for once?”

“But I really like sweet stuff!” Gan Yanyu said innocently. “I’ve been researching these recipes for a long time.”

With that, Lin Tian decided not to press further. As long as the dishes tasted good, sweetness wasn’t necessarily a dealbreaker.

“And there’s one last thing—a secret dish.”

Gan Yanyu held up a finger conspiratorially. Why she felt the need to whisper this in such a tiny kitchen, where no third person existed, remained a mystery.

“A secret dish?” Lin Tian narrowed his eyes, sensing intrigue.

“Mm-hmm.” Gan Yanyu smiled mysteriously. “Just wait.”

Soon enough, the sweet-and-sour pork ribs and stir-fried lettuce were plated. Gan Yanyu cleaned the pan and walked back to the fridge.

She pulled out a white plastic container.

“What’s that?” Lin Tian asked, certain he hadn’t purchased it.

“Sago pearls. I bought them.”

Gan Yanyu opened the container and poured translucent little balls into the pot, adding water and bringing it to a boil. Once cooked, she fished them out and plunged them into cold water to cool.

Next, she poured coconut milk, regular milk, and sugar into the pot, stirring continuously.

What on earth was this concoction?

Lin Tian watched, utterly baffled. With years of kitchen experience under his belt, he couldn’t identify what Gan Yanyu was making. After three overly sweet main courses, Gan Yanyu seemed to be channeling some kind of mischievous sorceress, tossing mysterious ingredients into her cauldron to brew up some magical potion.

Whatever it was, Lin Tian was certain it would enchant him. He’d eat it regardless.

As the rich aroma of coconut filled the kitchen, realization dawned on Lin Tian. The thick white liquid was… coconut cream!

Ahaha, figures.

Come to think of it, sago did sound familiar—he’d seen it often in dessert shops.

Could it be…?

Finally, Gan Yanyu added the cooled sago pearls to the pot, along with chunks of watermelon and slices of banana she’d bought from the supermarket earlier. She ladled the mixture into two glass cups.

“Ta-da!”

Turning around with the cups in hand, Gan Yanyu proudly announced, “Yanyu’s Coconut Sago Dessert.”

“Why not just call it Coconut Sago Dessert?”

“Because I made it.”

“So the pineapple chicken could also be called Yanyu Pineapple Chicken?”

“Sure, but only my best creations get named after me.”

Right, right, right.

From now on, this place should officially be renamed Gan Yanyu Plaza.

Lin Tian should have guessed.

Given the rare opportunity to cook, how could Gan Yanyu resist whipping up a dessert?

Moments later, three savory dishes and one sweet treat were laid out on the table. True to form for a girl’s touch, the presentation was impeccable. Both the pineapple chicken and the sweet-and-sour pork ribs looked stunning.

The real test lay in the taste.

Earlier, Gan Yanyu had forbidden Lin Tian from sampling. Now, with plates served, he eagerly picked up his chopsticks first. He grabbed a piece of chicken.

As Lin Tian placed it in his mouth, Gan Yanyu visibly tensed, staring intently at him.

Truthfully, Lin Tian was even more nervous than she was. Back in the kitchen, he’d mentally praised Gan Yanyu’s efforts to no end. If the food turned out terrible, it would confirm his fears—and leave him thoroughly disappointed.

Fortunately.

When Lin Tian bit down, the juices burst in his mouth, blending the refreshing tang of pineapple with the crispy texture of fried chicken.

“Delicious.”

Lin Tian immediately gave his verdict.

Next, he tried the sweet-and-sour pork ribs. The balance of sweetness and acidity was excellent—on par with what you'd find at high-end restaurants.

Gan Yanyu’s learning ability truly was impressive.

“That’s good,” she sighed in relief, her mood brightening as she watched Lin Tian enjoy the meal.

“Oh, right—there’s still the sago dessert.”

Lin Tian picked up the glass on the table.

“It’s Yanyu’s Coconut Sago Dessert,” Gan Yanyu corrected earnestly. “I used to make this all the time at my grandpa’s café.”

“Mm-hmm.” Lin Tian lifted the cup and took a sip.

“Speaking of which,” Gan Yanyu mused, poking her lips thoughtfully while gazing at the ceiling, “now that I’m not in school and spending most of my time at home, I can’t rely solely on that 800-yuan monthly allowance…”

She trailed off, lost in thought.

“I’m thinking… maybe I should reopen Grandpa’s café.”

“Pfft!”

Lin Tian nearly spat out his sago dessert.
