Chapter 63: Exposure

“…”

Under the weight of her colleagues’ skeptical stares, the scarf-wearing woman—now identified as Officer Isha—grimaced and reluctantly nodded.

“He’s telling the truth about the pricing. That was my mistake; I didn’t prepare properly and just quoted a silver coin based on the field ops’ inflated ingredient costs… But this man is suspicious too.”

She shot Leon a venomous glare, blaming him for distracting her and letting the rebel escape. Taking a deep breath, she pointed at him with an accusing frown.

“To avoid blowing my cover, I immediately lowered the price when I realized it was too high. But he kept sneaking glances at me—and worse, at the target’s room.”

“I was just look—”

“It wasn’t casual observation. It couldn’t have been coincidence,” Isha interrupted sharply, her brows furrowing further. With unshakable certainty, she demanded, “There are over a hundred rooms in that building, and from the coffee stall, you can see thirty or forty of them. So why were you staring specifically at the target’s window?”

“…”

“Wait… Are you still accusing me?”

Leon threw up his hands in exasperation as the secret police officers once again fixed him with suspicious gazes.

“If I were one of the rebels, I would’ve bolted the moment you dropped your price. And come on, have you ever even been to a coffee stand like this? Without considering the coffee, the food you served me could’ve easily fed five people at any other stall!  You’re out here braving the cold morning air, practically giving stuff away for two copper coins, and you expect me to believe you’re not conducting surveillance? Are you running a charity or heating the street for free?”

“You… Don’t try to change the subject!”

Flustered by Leon’s biting sarcasm, Isha pressed her lips together tightly before slamming her hand on the table and snapping, “I’m not asking how I got exposed. I’m asking why you kept staring at the target’s window!”

“I only stared because you were staring,” Leon retorted, explaining his thought process briefly. He sighed in frustration. “Sure, I thought something was off about you, but I never imagined I’d be this unlucky. All I wanted was to grab a cup of coffee on my way to work, and instead, I stumbled into a secret police operation.”

“And since I’m also part of the Police Department—a half-cop, if you will—I casually followed your gaze. Who could’ve guessed you’d freak out so much that you’d abandon your post and haul me in for questioning?”

“…”

After glancing at Isha, who now seemed speechless, Leon shifted uncomfortably in his handcuffs and prompted, “Look, you’re overthinking this. I’m one of you. Hasn’t it been half a day already? Have you finished verifying my credentials yet?”

“You… Don’t think this is over. You still have…”

“That’s enough, Isha.”

The scarred brute who had earlier shouted from the second-floor window stubbed out his cigarette and raised a finger toward Leon, his expression unreadable.

“Take the cuffs off him.”

Isha blinked in surprise, then protested, “But the verification isn’t complete yet…”

“The archives department hasn’t sent back the results, but his credentials bear all the necessary seals. Rebels wouldn’t go to such lengths to forge them. As long as we rule out the possibility of him being an inside agent, we should let him go.”

“Fine…”

Reluctantly biting her lip, Isha lowered her head and moved to unlock Leon’s handcuffs. Despite her striking beauty, Leon had endured a miserable morning—first harassed while eating breakfast, then detained on a freezing metal chair for hours. His patience was wearing thin.

Rubbing his reddened wrists after being freed, Leon glanced at Isha’s still-dissatisfied expression. Unable to suppress his irritation, he delivered a sardonic jab.

“It’s nearly noon now. Thanks to your generosity, Miss Isha. If it weren’t for the generous serving of bread you gave me this morning, I might’ve starved by now.”

“You…”

Isha’s face darkened at Leon’s mockery. Having already botched the mission and embarrassed herself, she clenched her fists but ultimately swallowed her anger, forcing out an apology through gritted teeth.

“My apologies. It was my mistake to misjudge you, and I regret wasting your time. Please forgive me.”

Though her voice remained tense and the apology lacked sincerity, Leon chose not to press further, given her affiliation with the kingdom’s intelligence agency. Instead, he turned to the scarred brute.

“May I have my credentials back, please?”

“Of course.”

The brute grinned, revealing a smile that might terrify children, then retrieved the documents from the table and handed them over.

“I’ve heard a little about your bureau. Occasionally, our department requires assistance from yours. Perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to collaborate in the future.”

“…”

Collaborate with someone like me, an “agent”? That would only happen under extraordinary circumstances. Do you really want that kind of trouble?

“Sure, sure…”

Feeling uneasy about the ominous politeness, Leon mumbled vaguely and followed another officer out of the interrogation room.

Once everyone else had left and only the two remained, Isha—who had restrained herself until now—exhaled heavily and turned to the brute, her voice tight with frustration.

“Why didn’t you let me continue interrogating him?”

Raising an eyebrow marred by a jagged scar, the brute countered, “Interrogate him about what?”

“About four days ago!”

Isha snapped, “Four days ago, a masked figure dressed in black assaulted the editor-in-chief of the social section at The Daily Digest restaurant in Inlay Street. Later, they traveled to the headquarters of Char Department Store.”

“A few days ago, photos of this person appeared in The Sun’s entertainment section after being injured by falling gold coins. When I compared those images, their attire matched the masked assailant perfectly.”

“Hmm, and?”

“And today, he interfered with our operation to arrest the rebels! He deliberately distracted me, allowing the rebel involved in the assassination attempt on the princess to escape!”

Isha’s voice rose in urgency. “If he hadn’t shown up today, I might’ve dismissed it as coincidence. But now I’m certain—he’s absolutely connected to the rebels.”

“Yes, I agree he’s suspicious.” The brute nodded, lighting another cigarette. The glowing ember illuminated his scarred face, making the crisscrossing wounds resemble writhing snakes. Leaning back, he spoke slowly.

“The royals and nobles are nothing but lice nesting in the crotch of society. Once they start sucking blood too greedily, they deserve to be crushed without mercy.”

Repeating the words of the “masked man,” the brute smirked faintly. “After saying something so inflammatory, he dared to approach you using his real identity to cover the target’s escape. He’s the boldest opponent I’ve ever encountered.”

“Heh. Until today, I never imagined the rebels had infiltrated the Police Department—or worse, joined the highly dangerous Cleansing Bureau. This guy is a big fish beyond imagination.”

“I think I understand…”

Isha frowned, piecing things together. “So… You didn’t arrest him because you’re trying to catch bigger fish? To lure out more rebels?”

“No.”

Crushing his cigarette once more, the brute leaned back in his chair, chuckling softly.

“You’re overcomplicating things. He’s part of the Cleansing Bureau. Simply put—I’m too scared to touch him.”
