Chapter 64: The Classic Three-Way Choice

Leon had no idea what had transpired in his absence. After retrieving the confiscated documents, he didn’t even have time to grab lunch before rushing to the Cleansing Bureau. He’d already skipped work for most of the day without explanation.

Though the Cleansing Bureau wasn’t strict about attendance, it was Leon’s first day back after being hospitalized, and there were several tasks that had been delayed for days. These included wrapping up the aftermath of the attack of the Scale of Gold’s Sacred Spirit, investigating the whereabouts of the goat’s heart under the guise of visiting the Lion family, leveling up his Shooting Badge, and fulfilling his promise to help Emma with something from the Red Brick Road Hospital incident.

Oh, and today was Friday. According to The Lazy Witch’s Rental Broom, at exactly 3:30 PM, a feline visitor would knock on his door. He’d need to take some time off later to buy supplies to properly host it—ensuring the broom remained functional—and if he had extra time, he might as well swing by Happiness Residence. If it was safe, he could also practice his Parkour Badge proficiency.

As he mentally tallied everything on the way, Leon realized just how much he had on his plate. A headache began to creep in, and his already sour opinion of those secretive police soured further.

He was still technically a probationary employee, barely a week into his job, yet he’d already taken four sick days. Not only had he disappeared for half the day without notice, but now he needed to request more leave. Even though the red-haired chief was known for being easygoing, Leon couldn’t shake the feeling that this wouldn’t sit well…

…..

“Don’t worry about it. Go ahead.”

Without even hearing Leon’s full explanation, the red-haired chief waved her pen dismissively after a brief inquiry into why he hadn’t shown up in the morning. She approved another half-day leave with surprising ease.

“These are all circumstances beyond your control,” she said with a casual shrug. “Taking leave because of an emergency is perfectly normal. Don’t think so poorly of me, alright?”

Seeing Leon visibly relax, the chief’s throat bobbed slightly as she shifted gears, her smile widening.

“However,” she continued, her tone turning sly, “while your reasons for taking leave are entirely justified, they’re starting to pile up. Reporting all these absences to higher-ups by the end of the year might make our bureau look a bit… lax. How about we handle this differently this time?”

“Handle it differently?” Leon blinked, his guard immediately rising as he studied the chief’s fox-like squinted eyes. Hesitantly, he replied, “Actually… I don’t necessarily need to take leave today. If it’s inconvenient…”

“Oh, come on! Do you really think I’d harm you?” The chief rolled her eyes playfully, then softened her expression. “Relax. It’s just a slight adjustment to your schedule. Instead of marking this as leave, I’ll assign you an external task after work hours—but without overtime pay. What do you say? Can you live with that?”

So… essentially, the half-day leave would be compensated by working late after his shift?

After mulling over the chief’s proposal, Leon found nothing overtly wrong with it. Still, the chief’s perpetually squinted eyes made him uneasy.

“It’s fine, I guess…” he said cautiously, eyeing her suspicious grin. “But can I ask a few questions first?”

“How far is this external task?”

“It’s a bit far from the bureau, but still within the capital.”

“And will it take long?”

“Not at all. With your… skill level, I’d say one night should suffice.”

“Will I face any dangerous enemies?”

“Nope. Just an investigation—your specialty.”

“Then…”

“Good grief! So many questions!” The chief sighed, exasperated. “One Emma is enough to deal with; must you copy her habits? Fine, since I’m free these days, if you’re worried about danger, I’ll accompany you myself.”

Accompany him?

Hmm… The Cleansing Bureau consisted of one commissioner, twelve directors, and twelve Zodiac Branches beneath them. The red-haired chief’s strength was legendary. If she came along, it seemed highly unlikely anything could go wrong.

After considering her offer, Leon couldn’t find any hidden traps or valid excuses to decline. Reluctantly, he nodded in agreement.

“Alright, I’ll accept the assignment. But I’ve got quite a few unresolved matters on my plate. If possible, I’d like to delay it by a couple of days.”

“No rush, no rush…” The chief smiled, stopping Leon as he turned to leave. “By the way, there’s something else I need to tell you.”

Finally managing to rope… er, secure a partner for her plan, the chief’s mood brightened considerably. She called out cheerfully, “The corpse of that toad from the Scale of Gold and the coins it regurgitated are exceptional materials. Barring any mishaps during production, you’ll soon possess a rather powerful anomalous item.”

“That’s fantastic news!” Leon exclaimed, thrilled. His current anomalies were purely utility-based, leaving him reliant on firearms for combat. Eagerly, he asked, “What kind of abilities will this anomaly have? Do you know?”

“I don’t,” the chief admitted with a smile, “but I can guarantee you’ll be the first to find out.”

She paused, then elaborated, “According to headquarters, the toad’s essence was potent enough to craft a high-tier anomaly. However, due to severe damage and significant power loss, we can’t preserve all its original concepts. Instead, we’ll choose one of three primary concepts to serve as the core of the anomaly.”

Pausing dramatically, she raised a finger. “The first concept is money—or currency, if you prefer. By melting down the toad and its coins, then infusing a touch of divinity to elevate its essence, we can create an anomaly based on wealth. As the Sacred Spirit of the Scale of Gold, money represents the toad’s strongest concept. While this anomaly won’t aid in combat, its practicality will be unparalleled. This is my top recommendation.”

So… another utility-based anomaly?

Seeing Leon instinctively frown at the mention of “no combat potential,” the chief’s expression grew serious. Leaning forward, she emphasized, “Leon, I understand you’re desperate for an offensive anomaly, but their value isn’t solely tied to battle. Choosing this anomaly means you’ll never lack for money again. No matter where you go, you’ll always have access to the appropriate currency to trade for whatever you desire.”

Her voice took on a dreamy quality as she continued. “This extends beyond our world. From the depths of ocean trenches to the dark side of the moon, from ancient kingdoms lost to time to futuristic worlds spanning centuries—even the demon-filled abyss. As long as intelligent beings exist, using something akin to currency and willing to trade with you, you’ll produce the exact amount needed to acquire anything you want.”

……

Leon sat silently, weighing the possibilities.
