Chapter 98: This Must Never Be Known!
My name is Gu Lang, and I’m an outdoor livestreamer.
I’ve crossed the Maasai Mara in East Africa, witnessed the breathtaking beauty—and danger—of the Ngorongoro volcano, and even narrowly escaped poachers’ bullets in a desperate bid for survival. But today, on the stunning Hulunbuir Grasslands… I got lost!
---
At some point, thick fog had rolled over the grasslands. Visibility plummeted to almost nothing; ten meters ahead was already swallowed by a sea of white emptiness.
“I swear it wasn’t on purpose!”
Huddled inside the Jeep Wrangler that now sat stranded somewhere unknown, Gu Lang wore a face full of dread and self-pity. A small, faintly purple handprint adorned his forehead like an ironic badge of shame.
“I just dozed off for one tiny moment, I promise! I swear! Just a quick nap!”
Across from him, perched atop the dashboard, Wang Ping hopped up and down in outrage.
One tiny moment? Do you think I’m blind?
Right next to Wang Ping’s feet, beside the steering wheel, the car's GPS screen glowed with the time: 4:26 AM. The navigation map displayed the route their driver had taken throughout the night—a masterpiece of reckless driving.
The Wrangler had scrawled what looked like a cursive Chinese "dragon" across the vast expanse of the grassland before coming to a halt 200 kilometers south of Hulunbuir City. Any further, and they would have driven straight into the dense primeval forests of the Greater Khingan Mountains.
A certain honey badger felt cold sweat trickling down its spine.
It was terrifying! Sure, he’d always known this guy was unreliable—but to this extent? It was as if Gu Lang was risking their lives simply to keep his livestream going.
And truthfully, Gu Lang was scared too. Looking at the route traced on the GPS, there were moments when they’d grazed perilously close to rivers and lakes. If they'd veered off course just slightly, they could’ve ended up submerged in icy waters—with unimaginable consequences.
But right now, Wang Ping’s anger had distracted him enough to push those thoughts aside.
With a sycophantic grin plastered across his face, Gu Lang tried to placate the fuming creature. “How about you take another nap? I guarantee that by the time you wake up, we’ll be enjoying piping-hot beef stew in Hulunbuir City…”
“Gurgle…”
Before Wang Ping could respond, his stomach chimed in first. With that single growl, the murderous aura radiating from the honey badger dissipated instantly, replaced by an awkward silence filled with unspoken hunger.
Gu Lang wanted to laugh but held back, biting down hard on his molars as he braced himself for another possible slap across the face.
You stupid stomach! We’re trying to discuss something serious here!
Wang Ping smacked his belly in frustration. He wanted to roll his eyes but remembered he couldn’t quite manage it anymore, so instead, he shot Gu Lang a glare and shuffled back along the dashboard toward the passenger seat.
Sleeping was out of the question.
Wang Ping didn’t want to wake up later only to find no beef stew waiting—just an overturned vehicle and a pixelated mess of a human face staring back at him. And worse still, who knew if he’d wake up at all after such a disaster?
“From now on,” the honey badger resolved silently, “when Gu Lang drives, I’ll keep my eyes glued to him.”
Seeing how the mere mention of beef stew had calmed the honey badger down, Gu Lang chuckled nervously and quickly restarted the car, resetting the navigation system to guide them toward Hulunbuir City
“Ding~”
“Ding~”
On the dashboard, a red fuel-tank-shaped warning light began blinking ominously.
Wang Ping stared blankly.
So not only did you forget to buy food, but you also forgot to fill up the gas tank?
“This…” Gu Lang scratched his head, utterly bewildered. What was he supposed to do now?
“Boss… uh, our car might be broken…”
Gu Lang turned to Wang Ping, feigning shock and confusion, delivering his line with surprising seriousness.
Hmph!
Inside, Wang Ping sneered. Oh, what an Oscar-worthy performance! You really missed your calling as an actor.
“You made the car break!”
This time, Wang Ping was truly furious.
Not only had this idiot been tempting fate all night, but now he was outright lying—to a honey badger, no less! His excuses were pure nonsense.
Leaning against the dashboard for support, Wang Ping flipped gracefully onto Gu Lang’s shoulder and promptly delivered a sharp smack to his face.
“Ow!”
“You hit me again!”
“It’s not my fault the car broke!”
“I’m sorry…”
“Don’t hit me in the face, dammit!”
“Can’t I just say I’m sorry already?”
In the thick fog, the yellow headlights of the Wrangler flickered faintly as the vehicle swayed uncertainly in the wilderness, its occupants caught between despair and absurdity.
Since the car was out of gas and they were stranded far from any main road, their only option was to find help in the nearest town. At the very least, they needed to buy some fuel to get back on the road.
As the first light of dawn began to break over the horizon, a certain honey badger—now ravenous with hunger—was busy rummaging through a pile of clutter on the backseat, his little butt sticking up in the air. He desperately hoped to unearth a forgotten snack that he could munch on.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang sat nearby with a tablet in hand, one eye bruised and swollen. His eyes darted across the map displayed on the screen as he searched for the closest town. The shortest distance, in a straight line, led to Provincial Highway 202 at the edge of the grasslands. But Gu Lang wasn’t thrilled about wandering along the highway hoping to flag down passing cars or trudging miles to reach civilization. That felt like admitting defeat.
Instead, his gaze kept circling back to a large patch of deep green on the map—a section marked Daxing’anling (Greater Khingan Mountains).
The previous afternoon, during his livestream, Gu Lang had boldly promised his audience even more breathtaking scenery today. But now, facing the prospect of either not going live at all or broadcasting while confessing that he’d gotten lost, he cringed at the thought. It would be humiliating! This was supposed to be his grand debut under his new contract with Douyu, but instead, he'd managed to forget food, neglect filling up the gas tank, and somehow drive them smack into the middle of nowhere—all while sleeping behind the wheel. If word got out, he couldn’t bear to imagine what it would do to his reputation as an intrepid wilderness expert who once faced poachers head-on in Africa.
“No way!” Gu Lang growled, shaking his head fiercely. “I, Gu Lang, would rather drop dead from exhaustion or starvation than let anyone know the truth!” With steely determination, he locked his sights on the area labeled Daxing’anling.
“Boss, I’ve found the nearest town. Shall we go?” Gu Lang’s voice broke through the tense silence inside the car.
Huh? Already?
Wang Ping looked up from the mess of scattered items, his black-and-white striped forehead creasing slightly. He caught sight of Gu Lang’s face, which seemed genuinely earnest—but something about it struck him as… off. There was an odd stiffness to Gu Lang’s expression, a subtle unease beneath the surface sincerity.
For a moment, Wang Ping considered double-checking the route Gu Lang had chosen. But then again, maybe it was better not to appear too capable all the time. Reading maps wasn’t exactly like smoking—it wasn’t something he should flaunt openly. Besides, with GPS navigation and Gu Lang’s portable Wi-Fi hotspot, how badly could things really go wrong?
Deciding to give Gu Lang the benefit of the doubt this time, Wang Ping flicked his paws clean and hopped off the backseat. However, just as he reached the door, something occurred to him. Turning back, he scrambled onto the seat again, opened a cardboard box tucked aside, and pulled out a drone nestled within.
“What are you doing with that thing? It’s heavy to carry around,” Gu Lang asked, raising an eyebrow.
Mind your own business! I’ll take whatever I want!
Wang Ping bared his teeth in a mock threat, glaring pointedly at Gu Lang.
“Fine, fine! Take it if you insist. Let me grab my bag…” With a resigned sigh, Gu Lang turned away, leaving Wang Ping clutching the drone firmly.
