Chapter 99: A Disguised Misfortune?

The thick mist of dawn clung to the ground as Wang Ping trudged through dew-soaked grass, a small backpack slung over his shoulder. He tilted his head up, watching Gu Lang rummage through the trunk of their car, pulling out various items with an almost obsessive enthusiasm.

Before leaving Hulunbuir City, Gu Lang had stumbled upon a sleek black waterproof multifunctional outdoor waist pack at an outdoor gear store while shopping. Sure, it wasn’t nearly as high-quality or durable as the one whose strap had been slashed by a certain mischievous critter—but its design caught Wang Ping’s eye immediately. The pack was modular, consisting of two smaller pouches connected by a canvas strap that could fold neatly together. When worn, they hung on either side of the hips, resting just above and below the thighs.

One compartment was square-shaped, perfect for holding IDs, phones, and other essentials; the other was elongated, equipped with mesh pockets ideal for stashing tools like folding knives, water bottles, flashlights, and more.

From the moment Gu Lang brought it home, Wang Ping had his sights set on it. And now, with their plan to hike toward the nearest town, Wang Ping seized the opportunity to commandeer the waist pack for himself. He instructed Gu Lang to load the drone into the long pouch and tuck the controller into the square one. Once everything was packed, he slipped the belt under Wang Ping's arms, securing it diagonally across his body. The excess strap wrapped snugly around his waist, transforming him into what looked like a futuristic soldier outfitted with cutting-edge tactical gear. With the drone blades protruding from his back, he exuded a sci-fi vibe—a walking arsenal ready for action.

As for Gu Lang… well, Wang Ping couldn’t help but roll his eyes (figuratively speaking) as the man continued unloading item after item from the trunk: trekking poles, flashlights, climbing ropes, canvas hats, gloves, multi-tool canteens, compasses, binoculars—the list went on.

“What the heck…” Wang Ping muttered under his breath. “We’re only heading to the nearest town! Considering the density of towns around the Hulunbuir Grassland, even the farthest one would only be about fifty kilometers away—a mere hour's drive. Why does he need all this junk?”

Impatiently swatting at Gu Lang’s leg, Wang Ping bared his teeth in irritation.

“Almost done! Just give me a sec!” Gu Lang called out, hastily cramming everything into his backpack. After adjusting his hat and gloves—and then inexplicably removing the gloves again to clip them onto his belt—he slammed the trunk shut and darted back inside the car to retrieve a satellite signal receiver and power bank.

Wang Ping watched curiously as Gu Lang shoved some sort of portable Wi-Fi device into his bag. What was the point? They weren’t exactly venturing into a remote wilderness devoid of cell service. Did he think someone would steal it?

“Hmm, maybe he’s worried about losing it,” Wang Ping mused, scratching his tail absently. “I heard those things are expensive…”

“Alright, let’s go!” Gu Lang announced cheerfully, locking the car door behind him and turning to face Wang Ping with a grin.

By now, the sky had begun to lighten, though the sun remained stubbornly hidden beneath layers of fog. Despite the lack of visibility, Wang Ping vaguely recalled seeing forests ahead on the GPS before they parked. Trusting his instincts, he started marching in the opposite direction.

“Boss, you’re going the wrong way—it’s this way!” Gu Lang called out, consulting his tablet before leading the way toward the front of the car.

“Really? Was I mistaken?” Wang Ping paused, shrugged, and followed obediently. In unfamiliar terrain shrouded by dense fog, even his keen sense of smell failed him. Without a map to guide him, recognizing cardinal directions felt pointless anyway. So, he trailed behind Gu Lang, trudging through dewy grass until his legs and tail were soaked.

His once-bald tail tip had sprouted new fuzz, which clung uncomfortably to his skin when wet, causing an irritating itch. Every few steps, Wang Ping would pause to scratch it with his claws.

Gradually, shadows of trees emerged from the mist. Above them, golden light flickered faintly, as if the sun itself had only just remembered to break free of the haze.

Something felt off to Wang Ping. Why did it seem like the sun was being obstructed, peeking out timidly rather than rising fully?

As the fog thinned, revealing more trees, Wang Ping noticed the incline beneath his feet growing steeper. Unease prickled at him. Had Gu Lang taken a wrong turn?

Stopping abruptly, Wang Ping craned his neck to look at Gu Lang, who appeared oddly unperturbed. No confusion, no hesitation—just calm determination.

Could it be possible he hadn’t made a mistake?

Scurrying ahead to block Gu Lang’s path, Wang Ping pointed first at the rising slope behind them, then toward the direction they’d come from, his expression demanding answers.

“What’s wrong?” Gu Lang asked, crouching down to meet Wang Ping’s gaze.

What’s wrong? Seriously? You don’t think you owe me an explanation?

Wang Ping gestured emphatically again, pointing both backward and forward.

“Oh, you mean this hill?” Gu Lang chuckled nervously, realizing there was no fooling Wang Ping. Even here, far from Africa, he knew better than to underestimate Wang Ping’s directional instincts.

“I checked the map,” Gu Lang explained. “The closest town is Handagei. If we cross these hills, we’ll reach it.”

Wang Ping stared incredulously. You drove us to this godforsaken place in your sleep and now expect me to climb mountains too? Unbelievable.

Deciding not to dwell on it further, Wang Ping sighed internally, chalking it up to another one of Gu Lang’s quirks. Meanwhile, Gu Lang glanced at the time and decided there was no rush. Instead, he unlocked his tablet and switched to live-stream mode, panning the camera attached to his chest.

The stream’s title had also been changed by Gu Lang to: “Day Five of Our Hulunbuir Road Trip: Deep Into the Greater Khingan Range!”

Within moments, early risers and insomniac night owls flooded the chatroom.

“Didn’t you say you were on the grasslands yesterday? Why are you suddenly in the mountains?”

“Is the streamer lost?”

“Holy crap, the Greater Khingan Range?”

“Don’t do anything reckless, get out while you can!”

“Wow, you actually made Boss carry stuff for you.”

“Poor Boss…”

“Garbage streamer, why aren’t you carrying your own gear?”

“How’d you end up in the woods?”

“Aren’t grasslands supposed to be flat?”

Clearing his throat, Gu Lang adjusted the camera angle and addressed the audience. “Good morning, everyone! I’m Gu Lang, your outdoor adventure streamer. Yesterday, Boss and I explored the breathtaking beauty of the Hulunbuir Grasslands, often called the most beautiful prairie in the world. Today, to spice things up and make our journey more exciting, I’ve decided to increase the challenge.”

He spun the camera around to showcase the dense forest ahead. “This morning, I deliberately drove to the southeastern edge of the grasslands. Now, pretending our car has broken down, I’ll be hiking through this forest to seek help twenty kilometers away in Handagei Town. To make the experience authentic, Boss and I left all our food and water supplies in the car. This will truly test our survival skills—and yours vicariously!”

Standing on the slope, Wang Ping turned to glare at Gu Lang. His disdainful expression broadcast loud and clear to thousands of viewers online.

“Gu Lang,” Wang Ping thought bitterly, “you really know how to pat yourself on the back. Pretending to be stranded? Please—we actually are stranded.”
