Chapter 40: Birthday?
Damn it all to hell! I can’t believe this is happening!
Just moments ago, everything was going smoothly. Then, in the blink of an eye, everything fell apart—three catastrophic mistakes in one second, and his cover was blown completely. Leon cursed under his breath at the absurdity of it all, then grabbed the broom and spun around with lightning speed. In two quick strides, he bolted out of the conference room door, only to come face-to-face with the snarling security manager.
"You...!"
"You're finished!" Leon spat.
Before the words could fully leave the manager’s lips, Leon delivered a powerful kick straight to his face, sending him flying backward along with the rest of his sentence. Without missing a beat, Leon scooped up the folder from the floor and sprinted toward the exit like a man possessed.
By now, even the densest person would have realized something was terribly wrong. From inside the meeting room, half a dozen voices erupted in unison, their shouts blending into a cacophony that crescendoed into a single unified command:
"Stop him!!!"
...
You’ll never catch me!
Despite the unexpected disaster, Leon felt no panic. Thanks to the calming effects of Martyr of the Wine Realm and Emma’s sage advice—"When planning a mission, always think about how to escape if things go south"—he had already scoped out the layout of the Waterworks Company before entering. He knew exactly where to run once his cover was blown, so there was no fear of being caught.
After quickly assessing the situation in his mind, Leon decided against heading toward the main entrance, which was guarded by a squad prepared for protesters. Instead, he reversed course, dashing deeper into the heart of the building.
"Stop him!"
"Grab that guy!"
"Don’t let him get away!"
The chaotic cries grew louder as more and more people joined the pursuit, swelling like a snowball rolling downhill. Soon, the corridor was packed with pursuers, their numbers clogging nearly half the space.
Burdened by the items he carried, Leon couldn’t pick up much speed. It wasn’t long before the "chasing pack" closed in on him. A few of the fittest guards were now less than three steps behind, shouting as they ran.
"Drop what you’re carrying!"
"There’s no way out!"
"Halt! You can’t escape!"
Who said anything about escaping?
Glancing over his shoulder, Leon saw the guards closing in fast. With a practiced smirk, he tightened his grip on the handle of the Witch’s Broom.
"Boom!"
The air-concealing barrier shattered explosively, unleashing a bizarre storm that seemed to target only the lower halves of people’s bodies. The pursuing guards, already leaning forward as they ran, were swept off their feet like blades of grass. They tumbled en masse onto the tiled floor, heads cracking against the hard surface. Some, slower to react, were knocked unconscious outright.
Those farther back weren’t directly hit by the gust but tripped over the fallen guards, collapsing in heaps and creating a human blockade that cut the number of pursuers in half almost instantly.
"Damn it! Go around!"
"Get out of the way!"
"He’s heading upstairs!"
To their credit, the physical conditioning of the Waterworks Company’s security team was impressive. A handful managed to stay upright despite the chaos, while others who had fallen lightly scrambled to their feet and resumed the chase, hot on Leon’s heels as he dashed into the stairwell.
But then, something utterly baffling happened.
Leon moved through the stairwell like a monkey returning to its forest home. His slim frame floated upward as though weightless, covering most of a flight of stairs in a single leap. After using the railing to steady himself, he decided that wasn’t fast enough. Holding the goat’s head and folder in one arm and tucking the broom under the same armpit, he vaulted into the gap between flights of stairs.
To the utter astonishment of the pursuing guards, the man wearing the same uniform as them didn’t bother with the stairs at all. Instead, he began climbing through the narrow spaces of the stairwell, moving as though buoyed by invisible currents. Each subtle contraction and extension of his lean body propelled him upward nearly two meters at a time, faster than an empty wine barrel rising to the surface of water.
"What are you doing just standing there?!"
The meeting facilitator, pale-faced and panting, burst into the stairwell to find the guards staring dumbfounded at the ceiling. Furious, he bellowed:
"Chase him! He took records from the archives! Even if you collapse here, you must—must—ah?"
His voice trailed off as he watched Leon scale the sixth floor like an acrobat, kick open a vent window, and leap onto the broomstick, soaring off into the sky. For a moment, the facilitator forgot how to breathe. His face flushed red, then drained white, before turning an alarming shade of purple.
"Wha—what?!?!"
...
"Hahaha, who would’ve thought it? My heart really is in the capital!"
Ignoring the gale-force winds battering his face, the black goat dangling from the broomstick grinned wildly.
"Your luck is incredible! I barely mentioned it, and you immediately stumbled upon my heart, the strongest of all my other body parts! Kid, grow stronger quickly! Once you’re ready, within an hour, I’ll help you wipe out every last member of the Lion's family and reclaim my heart!"
"Speaking of luck..." Leon ignored the goat’s demonic ramblings, instead frowning thoughtfully as he recalled recent events. "Don’t you think today has been a little strange?"
"Huh?"
"Up until I left the meeting room, my luck was uncanny." Leon ticked off points on his fingers as he spoke. "I wanted to locate your body parts and immediately got a lead. I wanted to learn about the Waterworks Company’s compensation plan and stumbled upon the director’s meeting right away. I tried to sneak in to see who touched your heart, and suddenly, chaos erupted inside… Oh, and one more thing!"
He patted the pocket on his security uniform, brows furrowing deeply.
"It’s understandable that you fell out of the shopping bag—I did turn abruptly—but this pocket? To avoid losing my ID, I specifically buttoned it shut. Yet, just as I bent down, the stitching snapped perfectly, flinging my Cleansing Bureau badge right out. And that security manager? If he’d passed by even a second earlier or later, nothing would’ve happened. Doesn’t all this coincidence seem excessive?"
It does sound a bit far-fetched... And the number of good and bad events seems balanced? Hmm... I know!
The black goat blinked thoughtfully before declaring confidently:
"Kid, today must be your birthday!"
??? My birthday? That’s months away! And what does my birthday have to do with any of this?
"Heh, this is a blessing stolen from the Master of the Stars by your Cleansing Bureau." Seeing Leon’s confusion, the black goat chuckled knowingly. "You didn’t think the names of the 87 branches of the Cleansing Bureau were chosen randomly, did you? Let me tell you, those 87 branches form a conceptual anomaly known as the Star Chart’s Protection—or something like that. Its effect grants employees of the Cleansing Bureau special favor on their birthdays, aligning them with the corresponding zodiac constellation. On that day, they gain a diluted version of ‘wishing makes it so.’ Of course, it only helps achieve goals that were already possible. Don’t expect to become ruler of the world overnight."
"That doesn’t add up," Leon replied, shaking his head. "Wishing makes it so implies good fortune, but half of what happened to me today was pure misfortune!"
"Precisely! Did you think the Master of the Stars wouldn’t hold a grudge?" The black goat snickered, clearly amused. "While forced to bestow this blessing, the petty star deity retaliated by cursing you equally. Every stroke of luck granted by the blessing will be matched by an equal measure of misfortune after you achieve your goal. Borrowing comes with repayment, after all."
"It makes sense..." Leon nodded slowly, recalling the events of the day. But then, his brow furrowed again. "But my birthday isn’t today. It’s already passed."
